  1. Ludo had told Arthur all about the Thursday’s events when they’d messaged each other the previous evening, so Ludo was somewhat surprised to get a call from Arthur on Friday afternoon to discuss it further. “Sorry to bother you, mate, but I’ve had an idea about that thing with Damian. The gardener yesterday.” “We go and beat the shit out of the guy?” Arthur laughed, “Not my style.” Neither of their styles really. Arthur was slight, whilst Ludo was tall and lanky; neither was bounc
  2. Ralph's Mother had gone to town for tea with the girls, there were sandwiches, vegetarian sausage rolls and quiche, all best M&S. Good job the girls had chosen Indian snacks for lunch, Ralph thought. Despite the proximity of the meal-times they tucked in, as did his parents. "Golf club not feed you a proper meal, then?" Ralph smiled, hoping to make it a joke. "Ralph. It wasn't that sort of event!" His Mother glared at him. His Father simply rolled his eyes, "It was a meet and

    The Garden

Not common, there used to be a newsreader called Ludovic, and I used to have a colleague called that whom everyone called Ludo and the name rather stuck.
  7. Ludo was furious. It wasn’t Damian’s fault, after all the kid was only 10 but Ludo’s wife Jackie had landed him in the shit, and not for the first time, and of course she wasn’t around to clean up the mess. It was Damian’s half term and during the boy’s holidays, Ludo would usually work from home, so everything worked a treat. Damian could be trusted in the house with minimal supervision, giving them few child-care issues, and Damian was thankfully quite self-contained. The kid liked spendi
  8. Ludo has a nice life. A lovely wife and son, an attractive modern house, and a good job, idyllic really. But his wife is restless and spends too much time at work; Ludo finds himself getting too close to Arthur, the father of one of his son’s friends. Then his wife’s job takes a sinister turn, casting everything else into the shade.
  9. "No Daddy, not there." "Silly Daddy." "Sorry loves. Daddy's had a busy day." The twins were not impressed, whatever sort of day Daddy had had, he was supposed to pay attention to them. They were playing a board game, based on an old super-hero film. A few weeks back, he had popped into one of the local charity shops, twins in tow, to see if they had any casual clothes for him, stuff it didn't matter ruining when rough-housing in the park with his daughters. The girls had soon got
  10. I never say never when it comes to giving characters further adventures, tho nothing planned as yet
  11. Early on in planning the exhibition at the Tramshed, I’d had a complete blue funk and decided I couldn’t cope. Amanda had taken me for a drink talked some sense into me and found Richard. He wasn’t a co-curator, something I’d wanted or thought I did, he was a picture researcher. He had a near miraculous ability to find pictures, make connections between them, and he and Amanda had managed to get some great images for the show. And, I did have a co-curator though not named as such; Amanda to
  12. Thanks. I was worried it was a bit slow, but there was so much furniture in Ralph's head to be dealt with first.
  13. Thursday, Ralph was so nervous, he was early. Ridiculously so. He went wandering and found a shop selling rip-off designer gear, including kids’ stuff. There were backpacks, matching but in different colours, just right for the twins. He always struggled with presents for them, and these would make a nice start for Christmas, and he could fill them with whatever rubbish he happened to manage to pick up. Of course, he ended up arriving late and laden down. But Nolan's face when Ralph did arrive w
  14. What we started to refer to as The Last Party came at the end, for me, of a busy and lucrative week as if fates wanted to emphasise the positives in the air. There was even a job for Dan to apply for; he’d started scanning for them, but most had been too lowly or in other ways unsuitable. After our previous experience, we had seriously considered not going to the party but talked ourselves into it. For a start, as Dan was fond of pointing out, though we suspected Francis Heyward might cut a
  15. The meeting with Gordon does happen, but not for a few chapters yet I'm afraid, though Russ appears in person first.
  16. Yes, life is going to get 'interesting'
  17. Ralph stared out of the kitchen window. The twins were dutifully playing with their grandfather. They were having fun, after a fashion, though their clothes were the sort of nice girlie things that meant they could not be as active as they would like. If they got home early enough, he knew that there'd be a rough and tumble session in the local park. Visits to his parents were always a trial, they had such particular ideas, about everything. The girls enjoyed the visits in small doses, the
  18. Don't worry Dan and Vaughan are fine. Not sure about Francis & his crew, though!!
  19. I had been careful with who I invited to the launch party. Amanda, Bill, and Mae of course, as well as Greg and Len who said no as getting away for a second event was too complicated, and there were other friends and acquaintances such as Steve, and Tony and Judith, who were not directly connected to my professional artistic/journalistic life. Martin and Bart had regretfully declined; I’m not sure whether they genuinely had another engagement or simply didn’t fancy The Manor again. But many
  20. "Shit. He can't be serious." Beth looked up, "A problem?" Ralph rolled his eyes, "Morrie from Iverson's has just sent me a batch of images for the website." Beth looked puzzled, "And?" Ralph pulled a face, "You'd better come and look, though I warn you, you can't unsee them." Beth simply laughed, got up and came round to Ralph's desk. She leaned over him looking at the image, then with a 'may I', took control, zooming into the image and looking at the others. She sm

  22. Regarding Oor Wullie, I lived in Scotland for five years in the late 1970s and the comic strip was an essential part of life, more here: https://www.dcthomson.co.uk/brands/oor-wullie/
  23. In fact, Amanda, Mae Martin, Bart, Len, and Greg all got a preview of the hang. After an exhausting week when I supervised the hanging and fielded Heyward’s obsessive interest in the minutiae, we were done. There had been a few late nights and Heyward got the guys to rehang the rehang. They at least got overtime, all I got was a headache and a burning desire to strangle him. Yes, it was worth it, but some of the fine tuning that Heyward wanted was simply obsessive attention to detail,
  24. More of Therese's reaction in the next chapter, you will be pleased to know!
  25. To his surprise, Nolan had got back to him, and they were meeting on Friday evening. Nolan had apologised for the timing, but it was one of the few slots that he had free. Ralph was a bit late; a video conference had overrun, and he had follow-up paperwork to sort. Then the cab was delayed, so he arrived frazzled. It was a wine bar, not a place he'd ever visited, but then Therese and he had favoured restaurants for their odd treat, and his days of hanging about in bars with mates seemed to have
