  1. Ludo woke up early and ended up rushing for the bathroom. Arthur found him retching over the toilet. Finally, it finished, and they ended up sitting in the kitchen with cups of mint tea. “You Ok now?” “Think so. Sorry about that. Can’t think what happened.” “Well, last night’s dinner was harmless enough.” “Yea. Reckon it might be anxiety.” “About Jackie?” “The whole thing. If the police are wrong then I’m still in the frame for the fraud, and if Graham Marcus is rig
  2. Saturday evening, they did watch Spirited Away, and the girls loved it. It also helped to have something riveting to watch so that they would not worry so much about the noise of fireworks. Not that they were scared, quite. But it was a bit late for them to be out and Therese wasn’t keen. She reluctantly let them do a bit of ‘trick or treat’ on Halloween, but standing in a cold park watching fireworks was too far. Ralph didn’t mind, and Nolan commented to the girls that it was far cosier here.
  3. 'This woman is morally your ugliest character yet' I'm definitely going to frame that quote!
  4. The whole place had a rather bleak, unloved air, as if no-one spent enough money on it, which was probably true. After all, why have luxury around for interviews with potential felons. DS Marcus was at the Police Station with another policewoman, introduced as DC Cynthia Creaton. She was big, sleek, glossy and dark skinned, and Ludo suspected there were muscles underneath her uniform, and he didn’t want to find out. The name rang a bell, he thought Arthur had talked to one called Cynthia. H
  5. Russ is the focus of his own story later in the series, filling in some background...
  6. Morrie was delighted when Ralph got back to him about dates for their photo shoot. The best slot was Thursday evening, that seemed to work for Ivor, Ralph and Nolan. Morrie snapped the offer up immediately, blithely commenting that he was sure that he’d manage to fix one of his photographers. Beth had laughingly offered her services as photographer to Ralph, which had caused Ivor to protest, but they’d all known that it for the joke it was. There was no way either man fancied their colleagu
  7. Friday, Arthur and Adam moved in properly. It felt strange, the four of them in the house. It was plenty big enough, but Ludo was so used to having space and time and he was horribly aware that Arthur seemed to be trying to occupy as little room as possible. Late morning, Ludo wandered into the work area for Arthur that they had created in what had been Jackie’s study. His heart lurched, it felt so odd her not being here, though like Damian, he didn’t want her back. “Look, we’re never going
  8. Thanks! I have to confess that tofu chowder isn't something I have ever cooked, but it seemed logical based on my (very English) recipe for chowder.
  9. “He’s moved in!” “No! The Dribble's moved in with you?” Therese laughed, “No way. That’s turned into a drought. No, Ralph’s boyfriend.” “Bloody hell. Randy Ralph’s back.” “That was quick. But”, Dee’s brow wrinkled, “what you said about Ralph’s place being small.” “Is entirely true. But it’s a necessity.” Barb cackled, “What, Ralph not getting enough, and he needs it on tap?” “No. The boyfriend’s accountant has embezzled funds and done a runner. Bloke’s company
  10. “You know, I can’t remember the last time I did this.” Arthur made an interrogatory ‘Mmm’ sound. “Wake up next to someone different. I spent the last ten years or so waking up next to Jackie.” “Last week?” “Shit, of course. It seems weeks ago. This is becoming a habit”, Ludo felt for Arthur’s hand under the covers, “And a welcome one.” “And waking up next to no-one else?” “Well, there was the odd one-night stand, but never overnight.” “With women?” “Bloody
  11. Thanks indeed! There are two more finished, so far, in the Parborough series, plus I am currently working on another long-running one with yet another family.
  12. Thanks, am touched and delighted by people's support and hopefully enjoyment!
  13. Saturday was certainly not an ordinary morning. For a start Nolan was there, and he coped pretty well with the chaos of an early start with the twins. He would take them to football; it meant them arriving well before they needed to, but they professed themselves delighted to be able to help Nolan setting things up. The girls had popped their heads around the bedroom door and given the two men a bright, good-morning smile. Nolan had pulled the covers right up to his neck, understandable but also
  14. “The Andreas Huber bloke has disappeared too. I’ve just had the SFO on the phone.” “So, it’s up a notch?” “You’ll have a warrant, first thing”. “That’s gonna change things, sir. Kid gloves off?” “I don’t know, you can be nice guy. I’ll be Mr Nasty in the background. Wait for the kid to go to school, one less thing. And make sure Cynthia’s at the Bank as soon as it opens, with some backup. We don’t want anyone doing a runner.” “She needs to talk to the boyfriend too.”
  15. Don't worry, its only a blip!
  16. I think it must be Northern England, not sure how common it is. The online dictionaries simply say that it is dialect and probably 19th century in origin. No doubt I picked it up from one of my aunts, of which I had a goodly number!
  17. I have always loved the word 'Worritting' though I had to look up how to spell it!
  18. The doorbell went. It was late for a visit, so that presumably meant problems. But Therese would normally have texted or phoned, hell she wouldn’t just turn up. Ralph opened the door a tad warily to find Nolan there, looking shell-shocked. His eyes were red, as if he’d been crying. Ralph’s first instinct was a surprise, both to himself and to Nolan as he took the man into a hug. It felt good and right. Then without questioning him, Ralph drew him into the house. It all came out in a rush. N
  19. “The muppets couldn’t find Jacqueline Wilson, done a runner seemingly.” On the other end of the line Detective Inspector Donaldson gave an exaggerated sigh, “Recently?” “Yesterday, if the husband is to be believed. They had a bit of a barney, things not going well in the marriage stakes, evidently.” “Convenient.” Detective Sergeant Marcus gave a dry laugh, “Bloody convenient.” “Anything on the husband?” “Not a sausage, sir. Married 12 years, ten-year-old son, Damian
  20. Oops, I never thought about Morrie's dress, certainly conservative. Will have a ponder.
  21. Saturday was a shopping day, clothes for the twins. Not Ralph’s favourite activity, but it was the drawback of having the twins at a weekend. Therese had given him a list and he spent an hour with the girls sorting things out, mainly at M&S. Therese was most particular, and Ralph had given up experimenting. If it was to be worn in her presence, then he didn’t take risks otherwise the next time he saw her, she’d present him with the offending item with a comment like ‘Where on earth did you f

    T*ts up

I have to confess that I am loving the ideas about the various dark deeds and conspiracies that Jackie might have got up to, almost source for an alternative version of the novel. All will be revealed, eventually...

    T*ts up

It was always planned as a curved ball. The story is mainly from Ludo's point of view so the idea was for the reader to have the same sort of shock as him. If you get my meaning.
  24. The week it all went tits up started just like any other. There was a parents’ evening at the school that Jackie actually attended, and Damian was doing well, it seemed. His botanical horticulture bent had been noticed by the school as something to be encouraged; there was even one of his drawings of trees up on the wall. For that evening, Jackie basked in her proud Mum moment, and they felt like any normal family. On Thursday, Jackie had an event in town and couldn’t be home. It was Arthur
  25. By Thursday morning, Ralph was feeling frazzled, low on sleep, anxious and freaked out. The week hadn’t started well. A big client had dropped a bombshell; the job they were doing needed to be finished this week and the spec had changed. Ralph suspected that someone at the firm had taken their eye off the ball, but at least the clients were paying a hefty bonus. But it meant him and Ivor pulling three late-nights in a row to get back on top of things. On Tuesday, grabbing a quick lunch
