In his new role at The Manor, Dan was responsible for internal and external security. His presence was not necessary at evening events, there was a pool of other qualified guys to supervise. But Dan felt he should get his hands dirty, so he did occasional evening duties. However, since he’d joined, Francis Heyward hadn’t had a really big event; evening duties simply involved an enormous amount of waiting around and boredom, he assured me. Heyward’s event planner, Dudley, had moaned to Dan that l

In the end, they had decided to meet Stan and his friend Jan at the White Horse, it was central, and it was a known quantity. Keith had suggested to Thomas that they ought to go into Leeds earlier and try to do something on their as yet non-existent list of things they wanted to do. A little research had thrown up Evensong at Leeds Minster. Parking was something of a challenge, and they ended up with a walk through all the areas of regeneration, canal-side buildings that had used to be warehouse

A bottle of white wine had been left for us, chilling in the fridge at the villa. Very civilised. No-one disturbed us, and it was only the alarm on Dan’s watch that reminded us to get ready for dinner, though the light was fading fast so we could hardly have stayed out later, in any case. Suki made a beeline for me as we arrived at the loggia, and once I had a drink in my hand, a very strong Negroni, led me to one side, ostensibly to show me part of the garden but in reality, to quiz me. Oh

Party time at the Villa Torronia

Thanks! -
Thanks to Isobel Bonner, it was a football-free week for Keith. On Tuesday evening he and Thomas went over Keith’s talk a couple of times, and on Wednesday he went and got some colour prints made of pictures of the sculpture, but also of Atkinson’s drawings at the Whitworth Art Gallery. He had a run-through again with Thomas afterwards. It was overkill, but Keith wanted to be prepared. By some miracle, Thomas was able to leave work early on Thursday, so he came to pick Keith up, grab a bite

Intrigued that my big breasted women came in for such comment. Glad that Heyward & shenanigans continue to intrigue. Read on, as they say. More Ercole imminently...

In case anyone is wondering about the Castelvecchio in Verona, here's a classic image including Scarpa's interventions:

“You reckon Ercole really did want to do summat last night, or was he just a tease?” We were driving to Verona, having managed to escape the house without any interruptions, this time. “I reckon a bit of both, though I don’t know where we could get up to any hanky panky, its hardly a vast place and I bet his bedroom’s in earshot of his parents’. Besides, with everything else going on…” “That ding-dong he was having with his Dad when we left.” “Business deal gone wrong?”

Saturday, Thomas had to be up early to go to work as their project was happening throughout the weekend. He was getting a lift again, and Keith, having got up as well, saw Thomas get into a plush Audi driven by a handsome 30-something guy. Keith’s heart gave a slight lurch, but he told himself not to be stupid, it was a work colleague and got on with fixing the van. It proved a profitable day, mainly sorting out the van and giving it a throughout clean, inside and out. Which led to him tidy

The latter, of course! -
I don’t know about you, but I always find the problem with parties is that something interesting is happening elsewhere. Not that my conversation with Emilio de Romana, director of the museum, and Giulietta Vanesi, the deputy director, was uninteresting. We were talking about Scarpa, the architect. Giulietta was something of an authority, and of course both had regular daily intercourse with his work at the Castelvecchio. I loved Scarpa’s work, but much of my knowledge came from books as a

It was Thomas’ suggestion that having driven to Manchester to meet the curator and conservator, they could spend the day looking around. The journey on the motorway was straight-forward for once, and it was lucky they were early as the car park Thomas was planning to use was full, so they had to find another one. Tempers got somewhat frayed, as navigating an unfamiliar cityscape and scouting for car parks highlighted differences in temperament – Keith was a ‘let’s stop and look it up properly on

Sorry to disappoint you, but it's probably more like this one!

Flying business class got us refreshments on the plane, served in pottery rather than plastic, but the most significant thing was that we’d sailed through security. When it came to travelling, we found Dan, and I had a similar sense of time. We were both early, I arrived to find Dan already there, looking dapper in a new outfit, the result of a quick dash to the shops. Dan was a most unenthusiastic shopper and I’d selected the outfits that he’d objected to least. Verona airport was small an

Saturday morning, Keith awoke early which was stupid because it was hours before Thomas was due. And Thomas wasn’t actually moving in, he would just be living next door, but still, Keith was excited. He got the jigsaw out, made himself a coffee, switched the radio on and started doing the jigsaw. Perhaps Thomas was early, or maybe Keith got absorbed, but suddenly he found the door opening and Thomas standing there smiling. In fact, Thomas had nothing like as much stuff as Keith had imagined

Yes Greg (and Len) will be back, another thread in the story.

I do lo I do love reading people's thoughts and comments.

Thanks

Dan’s inquiries into Greg’s present whereabouts managed to draw a blank, so we needed a re-think. Dan, I suspected, was getting worried; if Greg had dropped out so thoroughly, then perhaps there was something genuinely wrong. One way forward was to tell Francis Heyward and see if he was interested enough to pay someone to search professionally. I’d already tried the most direct approach and contacted Donald Mitchell’s agent, but word had come back that Donald had only a vague recollection of the

Beer drinking is very much the culture Keith lives in.

The hotel is seen as upmarket, expensive and so visiting it is rather showing off.
