No, I am not a cartoonist When I got off the phone to Eileen, my first thought had been, “No. No. No. I am not a cartoonist!” Ever since that first Chrys & Ralphie story—even before it really took off—people had looked at me differently. Well, some people. People important to me understood that Chrys & Ralphie didn’t define me. To get purely technical, if you took the figures of Chrys, Ralphie and co. out of the mix, then some of the images (the backdrops especially) rela

I think that Ian looks a bit nerdier than that, perhaps!

You'll have to wait quite a bit to find out. There are over 40 chapters in all, and we don't find out till close to the end. 😄

Wrest Park “Your only living relative has died in shocking circumstances, her husband is involved in dodgy business doings”, Charlie snorted but didn’t interrupt, “at the very least. I think you are entitled to play hooky for the day. Is ‘freaking out’ one of the stages of grief?” “Stages of grief?” Charlie snorted again and turned to me with a smirk of amusement. Thank goodness! We were in my car, so I was driving, and I rested my hand on his knee. “Truthfully? Guilty,

Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead?
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Ding-Dong! The Witch Is Dead?
From the outset, writing this story, I always knew that Daphne was going to meet a sticky end. The tricky bit was then trying to work out how that wove into the other story lines! -

Not far wrong! Maybe he'll be on secondment.😁 -
Road Rage “So what we doing here, Sarge?” Joss gave an annoyed rumble. “DI’s instructions.” “A hit and run? Isn’t that Traffic?” “Deliberate. So Scene Of Crime reckon.” Gloria whistled. It was a plain country road: a gentle curve, grass verges, plenty of visibility, hedges not that high, few trees. One direction, the village; the other, a scattering of buildings. “Anything more, Sarge?” “DI said make up our own minds.” Joss followed this with a snort

Boat Trip “You are sure I do not look like a big fish.” Slav looked down at the life jacket strapped around his ample chest. Rory laughed. “I think you mean whale. And no.” But Slav looked offended, and Rory realised the man was upset. “Look. Sorry. I wasn’t laughing at what you look like. It’s funny because everyone looks terrible in these. Ask Irma tonight, and I bet she’ll say the same thing.” Slav’s brow furrowed, but he seemed to relax. “If Rory is sure?” “Look. We want

Yes, it's the same Amanda! From the first moment of writing her, I knew that Daphne was going to come to a sticky end!

Cheering up the sitting room Sunday morning, I went over to the studio to do some work. I had plenty to do, what with deadlines that were looming. And it had the advantage of keeping me out of Charlie and Tom’s hair. I got rather absorbed and when I finally made it to the Garden Centre, Ian greeted me with the comment, “I thought you weren’t coming”. “Sorry, I got absorbed in work. But I always keep my word, right?” “Right. Thanks.” First, I had to admire the display bor

Going out & coming out
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Going out & coming out
We like to expand your vocabulary! -
Australian Rules “It’s nothing special, just Australian Rules. Premiership’s not till the end of next month.” Ian looked at Charlie and me with concern. Somehow Charlie had managed to find out about a match that would be on TV at the local pub. So when Ian popped in, Charlie had suggested a group outing to watch the match at the pub. And now we were walking down there. Ian had taken to popping in, usually when we were preparing something for dinner. Part of me welcomed the way he

The Holiday: Sightseeing
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in The Holiday: Sightseeing
My twisted imagination! -
"It's more like a castle than a church." Irma looked up from her phone and smiled. "That's because it is. Sort of. The tower was used to shelter people when the town was attacked." "Cool." Matthew looked up at the cathedral tower again. "Not like the church at home." Gavin rolled his eyes. "History. That's because the Normans built separate castles to keep the riff-raff in order." "Yes Dad!" "Where are Rory and Slav?" "Still inside. Evidently Slav needs to see every

Daphne, Graham & Charlie
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Daphne, Graham & Charlie
Good! There are a few twists to come, I promise! -
A lunch party Daphne and Graham’s house was bandbox-trim and horribly bland. The sitting room was a large rectangular space with matte oyster-coloured walls and cornice too small for the proportions of the room. Soft furnishings were in shades of taupe. The whole was aggressively tasteful, yet without any real personality. The only pictures were a couple of Constable landscapes —the sort of reproductions that were textured to make you believe they were genuine oils. As if! And to nigg

Relationship talk "You ever think about relationships? What you want ideally?” I looked at Charlie in surprise, but he was looking straight ahead, concentrating on driving on our way back from Boughton. “Bloody hell, Charlie. My ideal relationship? What brought this on?” He shrugged. “Just… Thinking about today. Doing stuff together, you and me. Set me wondering. That’s all.” "I have to confess that it's not something I analyse. What about you?" He wrinkled his no

Next morning Slav woke Rory up early and instead of going back to sleep Rory did indeed get up and pull on some shorts. So, the three of them walked to the beach for an early swim – Irma had been entirely unable to persuade Matthew to join them, whilst Gavin and Jason had said firmly that it was for young people only, they were staying in bed. But all Slav could talk about was their trip to the Port, he was excited. Coming from a landlocked country he enjoyed the sea and boats. But when he

Louis & Charlie relax
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Louis & Charlie relax
The picture was pure invention on my part! -
Christening Charlie’s room Charlie’s room in the small studio had the basics in it—bed, nightstand, chest of drawers—and I knew that an alcove had been turned into a wardrobe. But Charlie had also added his own bits and pieces. I sat on the bed with him. “Tom has made a nice job of it.” Charlie bounced up and down on the bed; the mattress was definitely on the firm side. “Didn’t he?” “Where’ve you put all your stuff?” “Wasn’t that much, and it’s in there.” He nodded

Advice & plans “This isn’t part of any project, but I’ve been working on something new.” Eileen raised one elegant eyebrow. We were at the coffee table in the drawing room at the Manor (regarded by Eileen as her office) and were due to discuss my draft of the latest Chrys & Ralphie tale. But there were always other things she wanted to talk about. I drew two prints out of my portfolio, one none the worse for being printed whilst the police had visited. A bloody strange

A visit from the police Monday morning’s operation by Northamptonshire Police had been a complete bust. None of the people the police were interested in had been where they should have been. Neither of the putative felons had been brought in for questioning, leaving a big headache for the DI. This meant that Joss and Gloria were returning to the station empty handed. The quiet in the car was one of gloom rather than satisfaction. They were just approaching Thrunton when Joss mumbled, “T

Despite the planned visit to the nude beach, Slav was keen to have an early morning swim again and so he and Irma made their date for the morning. Rory had intended to come, but Irma was unsurprised when only Slav appeared. He was wearing shorts and a grin. On the way to the beach, he talked about his nervousness at appearing completely naked but how he was looking forward to it too. Again, they chatted about bodies, and different shapes, but this time when they got to the beach, Slav simply dro
