Fag as a term for a homosexual is in use but somewhat old fashioned in the UK, and in this usage i wanted to use it in the sense of the word being reclaimed just as 'queer' was. Also, the alliteration appealed.

Its probably a class thing, as for a long time in England, soccer and rugby league were working class games whilst ruby union was the poshos game.
-
Have added a note about that at the top, to make things clear.

Thanks and yes, English usage generally has Football referring to Soccer.

The King William pub in Kenton wasn’t specifically a gay pub, Thomas had explained the semantic difference between a gay pub and a gay-friendly pub; the King William was the latter. But it did a lot of charity events, as the pub was right next to a huge public green. So, as they drove up, in Thomas’ car, Keith saw a crowd of people spilling out from the pub onto the adjacent green. And a huge banner saying Fags for Football; that was the name of the team he was playing for, so much for any idea

"Are you and Colin coming to the show next weekend?" "You bet. I want to see what you've been up to these last few weeks and want to support you." It was Monday evening; Joe and I were washing up after supper. "Colin's coming too. He's interested and besides he sings in a choir and knows that having an audience is important. Why? Is there a problem?" "No. It's great. All the others will have someone there." "So, you'll be pulling your weight. But…" He went silent, continuing

"That’s the first time I’ve done it with a guy on a bed." "So, you don’t count last week, on the moors?" Keith smiled, and playfully punched Thomas, "Course not”, he put on a comically strong local accent, “I were well brung up and know what a bed is." "So, will you do it again?" "Oh, I think so", Keith leaned over and kissed Thomas. And they did. The sex and intimacy were not without problems, a new partner, inexperience, a desire to ‘do it right’ and simple nerves. At

The photos that Owain had ordered to be printed came remarkably quickly, and without thinking too much about it, Colin had bought some mounts for them and packed up both pictures, the selfie and the ice cream sundae one, and sent them to his Mum and to Annalisa. Tuesday evening, when Colin and Owain had had their usual Chinese take-away, joined by Joe, the boy had showed them how to combine their photos into one album and to select images to create an on-line album to share. And Colin had s

It's always funny coming back to stories and finding that people see links and themes, making me go 'Oh yes', though at the time of writing I have no idea. As various people have suggested, perhaps all my stories occur in the same realm

Wednesday saw Keith on tenterhooks, hardly believing what was happening. He hadn’t lived in his own place, ever. He’d moved from his Dad’s to lodgings, then shared flats and houses. He’d had some great mates but had never had the experience of being all on his own. And that evening, he was on his own. Bart and Greg were away, but there was a bottle of wine to welcome him. Putting his stuff away didn’t take long; the place still looked a bit bare. He’d need to get things and some bits of col

Brian and Gordon's further adventures are coming on, but slowly.

Monday afternoon, I was finding it difficult to concentrate; I was nervous at the prospect of having my teenage nephew in my space. Finally, I called it a day, planning to make up the hours when I was in a more productive mood. Instead, I started to go through my photos from the holiday, sorting and deleting. There were some nice ones of Colin, usually taken unawares. He'd not thank me, but there was one lovely one of him about to tuck into an ice cream sundae, a look of pleasurable anticipation

Monday evening was more than fine, the weather was almost glorious. So, when Keith arrived, Bart and Greg were already taking advantage of the opportunity and sitting by the pool. Now more comfortable in his skin, Keith stripped off quickly and dived in. Soon there were drinks and food, and talk. "I’ve met someone." "Do tell" / "The bloke you met a couple of weeks ago" – Greg and Bart almost simultaneously. But once he’d said it, Keith went a bit red and felt shy. "It's only been

Not sure how common it might be nowadays, but I have friends who didn't learn until well into middle age, and I think there are plenty of city-dwellers who never bother.

>I've found a wonderful cache of photographs in the local archives. It seems that when the present owners took over the local newspaper, they dumped most of the photographs on the County Archives. They are rather poorly indexed, but some basic searches yielded up gold. "Family ones?" >Well, nothing personal, alas. We still don't have any of those, but certainly the sort of staged business ones, and civic. I have rather a lot of your grandfather and grandmother opening things.

They’d not intended to meet again that weekend. But… Both had stuff to do, in Keith’s case, it was things like washing his smalls and doing some maintenance on the van. In ordinary circumstances, there would no doubt have been a game of footy or something to pick up in the afternoon. But instead, he arranged to meet Thomas. They’d each drive for a bit, and meet at another of Thomas’ CAMRA pubs. That was something else new. Keith generally relied on word of mouth, mates saying that a pub was

I realise that not all American are the same, unfortunately some do rather stand out!! And there are British people who are just as bad.

"We now have half an hour to wander around the gardens, if you can be back here prompt at 4, then the curator will be able take us around the house." The local guide was giving them their marching orders for the rest of afternoon’s trip. Owain turned to Colin, "What do you want to do?" Colin shrugged, "I don't think I need to walk more; do you fancy going to sit by the fountain, you get a great view of the gardens from there." Owain gave a crooked smile, "That sounds a nice use of

Thursdays, Keith usually treated himself to something a bit special for his lunch, which usually meant lashing out on food from Tesco’s Finest or similar. Occasionally, under the influence of either his mate Jan (who was Polish) or house-mate Joe (Jiri, the Czech one), he would investigate the more exotic seeming cold meat and salami. One Thursday, he’d been sitting in the sun at Bart and Greg’s, tucking into his lunch of salami sandwiches, and Bart had commented on the food. Keith had expl
