We may be "sphinctor (sic) spasmed" but we did help populate your nation and begin your modern civilisation (only you'd call it civilization I'm sure). Cheers, Neil -
It seems 'homophile' is in the dictionary but it seems to be treated predominantly as a synonym of gay: Dictionary.com definition. I guess it's an unfortunate truth that most people who fit the 2nd meaning in that definition also probably fit the first meaning. Apologies to everyone for going off-topic Cheers, Neil

[DomLuka] desert dropping ch. 8

I think the punishment might be a bit harsh on Alice. She is probably only doing what she thinks is best for Rory - even if it isn't what's best for him. Of course I could be wrong and she could be a horrible woman who deserves the cactus treatment. Just a quick thought, how are you going to check for Chapter 9 if you are hanging from the ceiling? And does it help with the stress of waiting for a Dom update? I might try it if it does Tried chocolate and that didn't help. It was good but it didn't help -
Glad to hear that there seems to be little homophobia in the UK! Hope that trend, and the trend of you having good days at work continue I'm still trying to find a job! Had a few interviews but no offers yet. Cheers, Neil PS. What's the 'opposite' of homophobia? I mean is there a word meaning 'acceptance of gays'? Perhaps homoacceptance should be a word LOL

Dave, the best example of Inglish I had was when I was transferring my mobile number over to 3 and I had to phone their Indian customer services. They told me that it would take a few days, and in fact that it would take place on the 3rd March. Except the woman said the "turd of match". Now when the Irish say third as turd it just seems endearing to me but with an Indian accent it was downright hilarious. I was having troubles not laughing! Perhaps I am just evil. Mag, can't say I agree on the Scouser thing - but to each their own! Conner, I agree with your sentiments on writing exactly. I'm too lazy to give it a go. And I think I would be a good editor, but I'm too lazy to actually volunteer! Neil -
Congratulations Dom on an excellent ending. Of course now I've got to go back and read it all again. Can I blame you if I get a bad grade on my project now? Looking forward to more DD and TOU! Neil

Some good points here. LazyWolf, I know what you mean about American English being better in for situations between friends - I think this is especially so in the written word. Whenever I read British stories that cover conversations between friends, I find that the conversation seems odd to me - even though I use the same sentences and structures every day. Perhaps it's me that's odd! SugarMag, I'm interested in knowing exactly what you think a sexy British accent sounds like. Are we talking an "I say old chap, a jolly spiffing day" type of aristocratic accent? A slightly more normal James Bond-ish accent? I find it hard to believe you could be thinking of Scousers Of course personally I think it's hard to beat the Scottish accent, as long as it's not too thick. Very sexy! reapersharvest, we're starting to get a new form of English now in Britain that I like to call Inglish, and it is spoken only by the Indians who staff the call centres that are so very popular here these days. It sounds like English, but at the same time doesn't. -

<humour> It's typical isn't it? We give them their country and their language, they make a royal mess of it (or should that be presidential mess? ), and they don't show one ounce of appreciation. </humour> Yes I mean humour and not humor. LOL Cheers, Neil -

I guess that is probably most of the reason. Of course this is how the language evolves. Perhaps in a few years 'shutter' will be in the dictionary with that meaning. I guess it depends on how widespread the error actually becomes. I always spot typos in the first print. Almost to the point where I've given up proof reading on the screen and just printing it. For some reason the errors are easier to spot in printed form. Perhaps I should ask you what your favourite colour is then? Or perhaps something about a theatre in the centre of town? One thing that always amuses me is the way Americans seem to confuse us Brits and them Aussies. I don't know if you've ever watched House with Hugh Laurie (a Brit playing an American) and Jesse Spencer (an Aussie playing a Brit), but it always amuses me! Did you hear about the dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac? He lay awake at night wondering if there really was a dog. Cheers, Neil -

Ah well dyslexia is obviously a valid reason for this kind of error. I have a good friend who is somewhat dyslexic, and he suffers from a lack of self confidence when it comes to writing. It's good to see that not all dyslexics have that problem! I don't remember seeing it in any of your stories Dom, but then again they're so good that I tend to be reading them as fast as possible to find out what happens! I've just read my first post again and I hope that nobody reads it as being in any way insulting - I posted it out of curiousity for other people's views! Anyway keep up the good work Dom Cheers, Neil -
I've read an awful lot of fiction on the 'net now where the author states that somebody "shutters". I can only assume that the author did not mean that they were parts of a camera or indeed shielding a window and that instead the author meant the word "shudder". Often the stories that I read this in are incredibly well written - much better than anything I could ever write - with a good vocabulary, but then this glaring mistake. So I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps quite a few people really genuinely think that "shutter" is a verb meaning "to shake suddenly and briefly, esp. because of an unpleasant thought or feeling". Anyone willing to own up to thinking this? Or is this some new use of the word shudder in American English which hasn't reached British English? OK I'll take my pedant's hat off now. Cheers, Neil Edit: thought I'd better correct the mistakes in my post if I was going to be a pedant!!

[DomLuka] TLW ch 30
fatboyfat replied to JoleChristopher's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
I'd be happy with even a blog entry. Of course it would be best if it was one that said that TLW 30 had been sent in for publishing -
Glad to hear things are good! Hope you two will be very happy living together and that your new job goes well. I'm about to be going through that scary new job thing, as I'm just finishing my degree (soon to look like this hopefully :graduated: ), but I'm still at the even scarier find a new job part - with the interviews and assessments and personality questionnaires! It's nice to find some fellow Brits who might be lurking and posting here about the same times as me! Of course I should be asleep right now, or doing work for my project report which is due in Wednesday and I haven't done anywhere near enough work for yet. Sigh. Cheers, Neil

Thanks all. My post from yesterday seems to have disappeared for some reason (something to do with the new server I suspect). I'm trying to remember what I wrote in it so I can write it here again... never mind I'm pretty sure it wasn't important

Normally, unless it's complicated or long, I find typing the URL quicker than trying to find the right favourite (of course I should really tidy up my favourites into folders then I wouldn't have the problem). Of course I could change my homepage..... now there's a thought I do think that T shirt was right - after all this addiction doesn't affect my long term health (at least I hope not - perhaps some research is needed!). Of course it does affect my uni work but that'll all be over soon (yay!). Oh yes, almost forgot, thanks for the welcome!

You know when you have one of those epiphany things and you suddenly realize something? Well I had one of those earlier today. After Dom's post on his blog saying that the next TLW would appear within 24 hours I was too excited to do much but check my e-mail all day waiting for the message that it had been posted. So, as I was reading my e-mail, a message from Dom appeared saying TLW 29 had been posted in the subject - I quickly opened up a new browser and started typing the URL for Dom's site in (obviously I'd memorised it a long time ago ). I kept mistyping it and it took me ages to get it right. Then I realised that I was showing all the classic signs of addiction and that I might just possibly (certainly) be a Dom-a-holic like the rest of you people. Just thought I'd share my epiphany with you all - after all they say admission is the first step to recovery (although I'm not too sure I actually want to recover!).

[DomLuka] desert dropping ch. 8
fatboyfat replied to JoleChristopher's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
Wow. What a great chapter! Although when I realised I couldn't scroll down any further and the chapter had ended when it did I was like a 3 year old who's favourite toy has been taken away (I think there should be a toddler-with-a-temper-tantrum smiley ). Still I did find myself warming up to Aaron in this chapter - I really didn't like him before and agreed with all the people in the Bad Aaron camp but now I'm not so sure. I'm thinking that Rory would really have been in a worse state had Aaron not been there to be the voice of reason. So now I'm undecided on Aaron - think I'll just wait to find out what happens. I'm also finding that my favourite Dom story is often the one that was last updated... hmmmm I guess that says something about me -
I'm almost starting to live on US time (I'm in the UK too) so that I can read Nifty updates and Dom's updates and any other updates as soon as they come out. Of course it's not good when other people want to see me in the day and it's not good for my lecture attendance either! Exams started this last week so I'm having to go back to UK time for a while I'm off to Scotland in a month or so's time for my cousin's wedding. My dad's going to wear a kilt (a result of a drunken bet!) but he's chickening out of the 'traditional' method Oh, and to keep this post vaguely on topic I think TLW's great! Think TOU is my favourite of Dom's though.
