  1. Hi everyone (Thanks again, CJ, for continuing to allow us to post calls here!) It's time for our third anthology! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Slash Books is looking for short stories (500 - 20K words) that explore gay, lesbian, or alternative lifestyle romance. Be creative! Sword and Sorcery. Supernatural creatures. Magic. Sexy and sensuous, the characters in "Queer Magic" live in worlds where the supernatural is sometimes hidden, sometimes well known, but always real. Each story in this anthology includes aspects of magic or the supernatural, from time travel to exotic realms. Your story should focus on the relationship and its evolution. While sex is a part of many healthy relationships, we're looking for plot and characterization, not simple PWP (Plot? What Plot?). Intriguing characters and interesting situations are the ticket to success here. All genres (humour, action, angst, etc) welcome. For this anthology, we're aiming for happy endings. The chosen stories will be published in print and e-book form, and all authors will be compensated based on story length as well as per item sold, with a typical fee of approximately $100 CAD per story. Each author will also get up to three printed copies of the full anthology free of charge. Full submissions guidelines can be downloaded from http://www.slashbook..._Guidelines.doc . Deadline for submissions: June 25, 2011 Estimated publication date: July 31, 2011.
  2. (posted with permission) Slash Books Inc. is looking for authors for our new Anthology, "Truth or Dare". We are looking for short stories (500 - 20K words) that explore gay, lesbian, or other alternative lifestyle romance. 'Truth or Dare' is a tantalysing game; bound to the integrity of the players, fascinating details can be revealed both by what characters are willing and unwilling to do. Each story must incorporate either Truth, Dares, or the game of Truth or Dare as an element of the story. Be creative! Your story should focus on the relationship and its evolution. While sex is a part of a healthy relationship, we're looking for plot and characterization, not simple PWP (Plot? What Plot?). Intriguing characters and interesting situations are the ticket to success here. Be creative! All genres (humour, action, angst, etc) welcome. For this anthology, we're aiming for happy endings. The chosen stories will be published in print and e-book form. Full submissions guidelines can be downloaded HERE (right-click and select 'save-as'), or by emailing submissions@slashbooks.ca.
  3. (posted by permission) Hi everyone! Slash Books is looking for authors for our second anthology. 6. Hey there There are as many ways of starting and continuing a story as there are writers, I think... but here are a couple of things that have worked for me (sometimes!): 1. write an outline, and break it into chapters This is a tough one, especially for the first time folks, but it can really work to find basic logical flaws and the overall flow of the story. If you want to publish professionally, a lot of editors will insist on this. 2. index cards You can use index cards to jot down a couple of words on each of the really major events, then you can play around with the order of the cards. I use index cards for my character sketches so I don't forget what colour everyone's eyes are. Good luck!!
  7. Mostly, Big Brother makes me want to throw the TV! Still, there is something about watching it... it's like a Sascha Cohen movie. Kinda gross but enough really bizarre stuff to keep me watching out of horrified fascination...
  8. Went out and picked it up - hopefully this one will work OK with Vista. Wish me luck!
  9. Is that out TODAY?? Awesome! I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend...
  10. Ah, man. I love Canada. I can't imagine living anywhere else, at least not full time. Last fall I flew to Vancouver and rented a 4 wheel drive that I then proceeded to drive to Calgary .. by way of Whitehorse. Best. Vacation. Ever. I think we can be forgiven for Celine Dion, right?
  11. Hi everyone! I'm Nicole, and I am a writer, editor and IT manager from Toronto. I run a small publishing company and I'm thrilled to find this forum for writers. I really look forward to reading the stories on the site and to making new friends. Cheers Nicole
