Straight and Narrow - 1. Straight and Narrow

Just could NOT stop my pen! so.. hope you like it!

Borrowed words, loaned tunes,

And stolen poems from famous bards,

They hit home more than yours or mine ever could;

Life’s just unfair, and so were the cards.

Passion, neither of us lacked,

Words... well, you had enough.

Me? Well, all I had was

A very soft heart, and the exterior, just as tough.

Emotions rocked my core,

Dealing with them, that’s another story!

Scared, terrified I grabbed onto you,

It felt right, and NO, I’m not even the least bit sorry!

Pain? Yes, I know I’ve caused you plenty,

But, in love, tell me who does not?

You are my breath of fresh air,

I am yours too... or so I erroneously (?) thought.

Poets have wanderer’s souls, you’d said,

But I was determined,

To not let distance or ignorance come in between us,

Tell me darling; was I foolish, or just plain blind?

How could I have not seen,

My arrogance causing you so much pain?

My promises to take away your burdens,

All just seemed to be in vain.

I’ve never doubted your feelings,

They were just as pure, I knew.

But, in this narrow minded world,

Acceptance we’d receive would be just from a few.

They say, if we’re not living the straight and narrow,

We were just toying with life.

Do you really believe, that

When a boy loves a girl, he’s only looking for a wife?

We’d both made each other a promise,

The one we struggle so hard to keep;

Sometimes it hurts either way babe; I know when you hide,

Yes, the connection runs just that deep!

The 'Masked Us' is easier to pull off,

With your nature and mine,

Do you realise, every time we see it on each other,

We know that the other is anything but ‘fine’?

How long will we keep pretending?

For the sake of the others around;

For those who never really understood,

Those who shook your trust, your faith, your ground!

Those who made you feel you’re not worth it,

Those who said they do not understand, do not care,

That wall, even I cannot breach; you do not even let me enter

Tell me, how is that fair?

I do not expect much, you know,

Except, just to share.

Just to lend a helping hand,

When the burden becomes too heavy to bear.

The sparkle in your eyes keeps me alive,

Alive, kicking and wanting more;

Do you not understand that is my life’s driving force,

If that is gone, I will really have nothing else to live for?

This might make you laugh,

Or even make you disbelieve;

The words I’ve told you were oh-so true,

Truer words, I cannot weave.

I can never let you go,

Not even if you tell me to.

I know... I know you can never say it from your heart,

Even if your mouth enunciates them so.

So, my dear, we are caught

In this sticky net called Fate;

Tell me then, are you thankful,

Or are you cursing the way we met?

A few words and you’d barged into my heart,

I hoped I’d done the same,

Know what babe; it really doesn’t matter when;

The feelings soon took over; we were done playing the game.

This time, let me hold your hand.

Not because I need it, not because I have to...

But because it is meant to be there,

You cannot deny that fact my Darling, no matter how much you want to.

Personal? yes.. Still, would love to hear your thoughts about it. :) Thanks!

A lovely poem. I prefer free verse because I don't have to stop and think about form and I can just let myself flow with the words. Yes, it does seem personal but universal at the same time. I really loved it. I especially liked the part where you said (and I can't remember the exact words so bear with me) let me hold your hand; not because I want to or because I need to but just because it's there to be held. Sigh

I must have a bit of feminine soul. Those verses are so sensible.

I cannot often praise verses. It is a very rare circumstance.

For sometimes words pass through me like I were an incorporeal ghost. One need to have something more solid than a soul.

We need to have a body with needs unresolved, a memory fully charged with frustrations and disappointments. Then, sometimes, we let our body and memory lost on the solitary roads. This is precisely when I am a mere ghost, a pure spiritual being, that... well, words pass through me, for I have not any molecule of matter, I have not any substance at all and the words cannot hit any part of me.

I really like it when I can "get something" from a poem (as opposed to the times when I'm left going huh? :blink: -- though I usually blame myself for that, lol :P). Anywho, I 'got something' from this, and I just thought I'd say I admire your ability to share this personal poetry w/ us.
Thanks Sara, for reading and reviewing it! :) and I'm glad I made sense to you! :D some personal bits on here are like a jigsaw puzzle, so... till u get the whole picture (which probably doesnt even exist, lol) it's not really a problem, me thinks! :D

Frosty,

Yes you have the heart of a poet. This may be personal but in doing this way you also made it universal. Who can not relate to sharing something so deep with another and being the cause of pain, trying to help carry it, and knowing when the other person is hiding from them. Truly moving. I do have one or two things I'd like to comment on but will send them to you in a private message.

Thank you for putting forth such work.

I loved this one to reminds me of a couple from an old time period like some royal man falling in love with a poor girl hiding the fact that they love each other so much yet can't show it beautiful work :)
ahhh! :) yeah. you mean forbidden love? i can see that. but, tbh. this one really tells a story of two people who simple love each other, not romantically.. just pure, unadulterated love. and how that can be misconstrued! :/ glad you liked it!
