Rocky Prompts, Tennessee - 9. PT Prompt #49 - A Hunter's Loss

Prompt #49 - The Lycan Hunter - A werewolf hunter hears about a pack on the other side of the county. He drives to the glade in the dark of night, finds the wolves have surrounded a victim. Chasing them away, he discovers his boyfriend was bitten and will turn. What does he do?

Damn, there’s too many twigs! Poppa taught me good, but this here’s ridiculous. How the hell am I s’posed to sneak up on them monsters when I can’t walk?

I’ll give it to ‘em; they sure are brave. This here’s hunter country. Every fifth house… Even ol’ Maville knows to tote her shotty in the back of her Caddy. Don’t make much sense neither. Figured they’d stay out of the warmer states. Their pelts won’t be worth nothin’ if the hairs are too thin. Oh, well! If these freaks wanna die sweatin’ in Alabama, then let ‘em die.

There! There’s them sumbitches. Can barely make ‘em out though. Seems to be two… No, three. Wait…

That ain’t… Oh, hell… What the fuck’s Bill doin’ out here? He can’t be one; I tested him way back when. Let me get kneeled down here and check the scope.

They’re huntin’ him! Two of the bastards… Just fuckin’ toyin’ with him. Jesus Christ. Breathe… Line it up… Pull!

Got ‘im; right in the head! Now the other’n…

Bill! Fuck, Bill– Fire, fire, fire!

Ran off. Oh, God. He’s… he’s breathin’, but he’s out cold. Dammit all to Hell. Got ‘im in the leg. Shi— backpack! Med-kit. Need to bandage that wound. C’mon, where the fuck’s it at?

This… It’s bad. Pads, fuck it; use every one I got in this box. That should be ‘nuff. Gauze… there. Knot it off.

I… I need a damn minute. He’s just layin’ there. He’s been bit. Bit. Bit. He’s gonna turn. Hell, he doesn’t know a damn thing! He didn’t know a God-damned thing, and them dogs were gonna turn ‘im.

I… I gotta kill ‘im.

I’m shakin’. I’m shakin’ like ol’ Maville. C’mon, Dakota. Get it together!

I keep starin’ at ‘im, like he’s gonna get up and do somersaults. Like nothin’ happened. Wish he would. Just wanna kiss him and tell him it’s all a dream. Can’t even reach for my rifle. Arms won’t work. Sittin’ out here in the open like a duck.

The longer I sit, the more I think I can’t do it. There’s a bright side, right? He turns… He ends up young forever. Get’s to run around like a happy dog. His senses’ll be high as a kite. Hell, it’ll make him a damn good hunter. Yeah… And we can stay together. I can keep quiet about it.

Naw. It… Shit, it can’t happen that way. This ain’t no fairy tale. He’ll wake up, turn, and go for me.

I’m sorry, Bill.

Dakota sounds like a good ole Southern boy. Great use of the prompt and writing what you know and hear.

Sometimes you get the wolf, sometimes he gets you, that's life. I'm not sad.

I liked it. (The story and the ending.)

Sad story...Loved it but hell you know I love everything you write. Love the view from the hunter's perspective.

Great use of the prompt. But a sad tale, with the way it ends.

Thanks Chris! I thought about shooting for a happy ending, but like Dakota said: "Nah."

I haven't played with this type if perspective before this. It was a challenge, and I'll be doing it again.

Playing banjo music in my head helped when writing this. :music:

I never thought of flipping the script from my usual writing. I think I'll go back to writing from the wolf's side.

I was iffy about it, Patch. Didn't know if you'd be a fan of Dakota considering he gave up on Bill and chose his beliefs over his boyfriend's life.

I'm reminded of the following proverb...

Once bitten, twice shy

Other phrases about:

What's the meaning of the phrase 'Once bitten, twice shy'?

The proverb 'once bitten, twice shy' suggests that, when someone is hurt doing something, they are wary of doing it again for fear of being hurt a second time.

It is frequently used to describe the feelings of someone who has been hurt by a failed romance.

More like 'once bitten, once shot.'

I loved your different take on the prompt, keeping it light, then having it turn into an easy decision, rather than agonizing about it for six chapters. 😁
