Struggle Against Labels - 1. Chapter 1

Words can heal or be weapons. The poem looks at their power.

The conversation lulled me into a false sense of security.
Like music so familiar and then the beat changed
The words flew across the room at me
Each one was slow
painful
deliberate

They cut like shards of glass

The conversation had been such a distraction
The lull of waves slapping gently against the beach
The storm came from nowhere
The words were violent
The intent hurtful
belittling

They were true and false at once.

The conversation was completely over
The meaning left too clear.
The labels and words were scars on my body
They would be there even if no one else could see them.
They are mine now.

I do not want them.

They are the things we should always struggle against.

So is life,
So is my life,
So is all life.

I hate labels too. They are so oppressive and never the whole truth. This felt familar to me. Too familar. Words have too much power to hurt us. Thank you for sharing this. Are you participating to the Spring pom anthology btw? I hope you are!

I write a bit of everything. I know Lugh said the theme is doorways. Based off that idea I am working on something for him. Just will have to wait till after I finish the next chapter on my story.

Well most of us bleed a bit into our writing. Some is just straight out from the pain we deal with Mark. Glad you read it and understand it. I wish you didn't have to though.

I've never been one for labels. And this poem tells exactly why. It's like the old saying that the pen (words) is mightier than the sword. Very well said Comic!

Thank you Billy. Words can raise you up or tear you down. Labels only seek to box someone and keep them from being who they are.
