Six Seconds - 7. Author's Note

A u t h o r 's N o t e

It seemed to me that the humid garden that surrounded the house

It's been nearly four years since I completed and posted a story. "Six Seconds" is a spur-of-the-moment piece that I did on a break from my latest project, inspired by hypertext, multiverse theories, brain activity after cardiac arrest, and the words "A Night to Remember." I intended to just skim the surface of these endlessly fascinating concepts into a small fictional medium. Most of the writing was actually finished in about two weeks but the editing itself was another story.

With that being said, I would like to thank everyone who helped me with the revision process. James Savik (jamessavik), for being willing to look over my work and giving me your impressions of the story. I really appreciate your feedback as an experienced writer and your overall wisdom. Sharon (sat8997), for your editing prowess -- for your sharp eye and willingness to look at my story even though you barely knew me. Colin (colinian) -- thanks for helping me with my stories for all of these years. You're one of the first people I got to know here on GA and I am grateful for your kindness, superb editing skills, and friendship. Morganisagingekid, for picking out inconsistencies and grammatical blunders in my story -- you always have such a good critical eye for things like this, and no wonder, you're an amazing poet. Thanks for sticking by me throughout the years -- you're one of my oldest and closest friends. I know we'll always be tight. Leisureguide, for being honest in helping me chop out awkward metaphors and your spot on and insightful character analysis. You're one of the smartest people I know and one of the closest friends I've had as well.

I'd also like to thank Renee Stevens (the GA Anthology Coordinator/a GA Hosted Author) and everyone else who assisted in organizing this excellent event and for accepting my submission.

Haha yes, I do enjoy art as well. I was going to line and colour this picture but didn't have the time. I will let you know when I've made the discussion blog.

Very engaging. I loved all the flashbacks and history and while I was saddened by the ending, (I was hoping for some deux ex machina) I found it very touching. It made me wish for the happy ending variant in their six seconds.

 

Gripping from start to finish, you've really woven a well crafted story. Nicely done.

Hello Mann, I'm glad you found the story touching. I try to avoid deux ex machinas and actually changed the ending a few times in order to make a hopeful but realistic finish. Thank you for reading!

This story was really enthralling. Well written. While I knew Callen was dead when he went into the water, but when he suddenly met with Sage I had some hope that he wasn't really. Of course when the realization that Sage too had somehow died I started looking at the story very differently.

While I might have hoped for a happier ending, this one was appropriate. Thank you.

It was a very interesting story. Between the flashbacks and what was happening in real time it gave it a sorta surreal feel to it. I spent most of the time hoping somehow there was a way that they would. Even together again, but knowing wasn't really going to happen. It was really a sad story but happy in that even with the years in between their death they still got that final few seconds together.

Hello Daithi, I'm glad to see you again. One of my primary goals was to incite hope in multiple forms throughout the story, despite the fact that it was essentially still a tale of tragedy. Thanks for stopping by.

Hello Terry P, thanks for stopping by. I'm happy that you found the story of good standards, and that you found the ending satisfactory. I tried to give hints throughout the story so the ending wouldn't come as a slap in the face. Thanks for reading!

Fishwings, thank you so much for this wonderful read. Your characters are well rounded and I love the names given them, Callen and Sage. Lots of food for thought. And your imagery is pretty cool as well:

 

On cue, a million images flitted into his brain. Hê could hear the sound, like the amplified flapping of countless butterflies with glowing abdomens ascending into the air.

 

A face in his mind stirred. Pale wit a keen jaw and shining irises. Face eclipsed in a shadow cast by a baseball cap. Slight smile and prominent canines.
