Depression - 7. Tired

I’m tired.

My eyes don’t want to stay open.

I hold my head in my hands

and let them close.

And I drift away

into the memories of my life.

I float through the moments,

hear the laughter,

feel the tears,

smell the dinners cooking in the kitchen,

taste the orange popsicles on my tongue.

…and I jerk myself awake,

But I’m so tired.

My eyes are so heavy

and my arms feel like a pillow

as I rest my head on them.

And I drift away

into the world of my fantasies.

I wander through the mists,

hear the crackle of a fire,

feel the heat upon my face,

smell the logs burning in the fireplace,

taste the cold bubbles of the asti on my tongue.

…and I jerk myself awake.

But I’m so very tired.

And I can’t stay awake any longer

and the cat purrs in my ear

and my fingers stroke the soft fur.

And I slip away

into the welcoming darkness.

I settle into the quiet safety,

hear the softness of your heartbeat,

feel the warmth of your arms,

taste the sweetness of you on my tongue.

…and I start to jerk myself awake.

But I’m just too tired.
