Luck - 1. Chapter 1
I have been sitting here for the past hour nearly in tears. Darren does not really have a clue as to what to do, I never cry.
Am I sad ? Unhappy ? Upset ?
No, I am none of these things. I have just realised exactly how good I have it. I have a boyfriend who loves me as much as I love him, and a truly warm and supportive family.
The reason for the mood swing is a phone call I got from my mother.
“Hi Michael, how are you ?”
“I’m good thanks mum, how about you ?”
“Yeah, I’m good. Your father is driving me up the wall, but apart from that things are OK.”
“Yeah, I can guess he is, have you let him out of bed yet ?”
“Yeah he’s out, but I’m ringing up for a bit of a favour.”
“Sure mum, no problem what do you need ?”
“A break, between John and your father I need a bit of time to relax and let my hair down, so I was wondering if you and Darren are going to Glasgow Pride this year ?”
“I’ve got no plans to go really, and I think Darren is the same, why ?”
“Well I’ve never been and I’d quite like to go. So I was hoping I could come up in July and go to Pride with you two.”
“Give me a minute mum.”
“Ok”
“Darren, mum wants to know If we’ll go to Pride with her.”
“When is it ?” Darren asked.
“July 14th, up in Glasgow.”
“I’ve got nothing for that weekend, so tell Ann to come on up.”
“Mum, did you hear ? We’re going to pride with you. I must be the only man who’s going to be taken to Pride by his mummy !”
“That’s what mum’s are for son. I’ll organise some train tickets, can you pick me up in Glasgow ?”
“Sure no problem, just let me know when you’re coming up.”
“Ok honey, I’ve got to go. Your dad is shouting and trying to get off the sofa. So love you lots honey and I’ll talk to you soon.”
“Love you lots mum.”
And that’s where the problems started. I have read so much and heard from friends about what happened to them when they came out. I have things so easy all the other crap in my life fades into insignificance.
You read about people who are disowned just because they love someone of the same sex. It’s not about the sex in my mind, it’s more they love another man or woman. Why can parents throw away their children because they do not conform to what they believe is the ‘norm’.
I came out, and not only was I accepted, but loved by my whole family. Now I have a boyfriend who is just as accepted into my family as I am, he seems my parents as a second set to his. And I have the same with Darren’s.
Luck, sometimes you find it when you are not even looking.
