Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you expect. I always thought I’d wind up an old bachelor, the kind of man people respectfully described as being “married to his work.”
It was a euphemism, of course, and maybe not entirely true. But those were the times, and what did I know? It was the summer of 1932, and I was nearly thirty, going on eighteen. So very damned young.
