Building on @sandrewn explanation above:

The main difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist is that psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication, while psychologists are not medical doctors and usually can't prescribe medication

  • Focus
Psychiatrists typically treat more complex mental health conditions than psychologists, especially ones that require medication or medical treatments. Psychologists focus on the psychological and environmental factors that impact well-being.

  • Collaboration
Psychologists and psychiatrists often collaborate closely and may see the same patients. For example, a psychologist might perform testing on a patient, and a psychiatrist may prescribe medications and manage the patient's medical situation.

  • Training
Psychiatrists are trained in both medicine and mental health, while psychologists focus solely on mental health. Psychiatrists attend medical school, which typically includes four years of medical school and two years of preclinical training. Psychologists typically need to complete a doctoral degree, which is either a PhD or PsyD.

  • Treatment
Psychiatrists can use a variety of treatments, including medications, talk therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Psychologists typically treat mental health conditions with psychotherapy (talk therapy).

Psychologist comes from the Greek/Latin word psyche (life/sole, mind and spirit) and logos/logia (the study of).  The word was first used in the Renaissance by the Croatian humanist Marko Marulić in his book Psichiologia de ratione animae humanae (Psychology, on the Nature of the Human Soul). The earliest known reference to the word psychology in English was in 1694 in The Physical Dictionary by Steven Blankaart.

Psychiatry literally means the 'medical treatment of the soul' (ψυχή psych- 'soul' from Ancient Greek psykhē 'soul'; -iatry 'medical treatment' from Greek.  It was first coined by the German physician Johann Christian Reil in 1808.  Ancient specialty in psychiatry can be traced in Ancient India. The oldest texts on psychiatry include the ayurvedic text, Charaka Samhita. Some of the first hospitals for curing mental illness were established during the 3rd century BCE.

Just goes to show that mental health disorders have been around for a long time and not just the result of modern life.

I'm happy that so far no one has mentioned Freud, even though the comments have covered both psychology and psychiatry. Ops I just did. Oh well, Freudian slip. :)
