November Signature Excerpt: Save Tonight by CassieQ
Monday I featured CassieQ's story, Save Tonight, as this month's Signature Feature. Have you read it yet? It's one of my favorites, definitely an oldie but goodie. Please take the time to check it out, if you haven't yet. And maybe this excerpt will help convince you.

Then, in the seamless, senseless transition that are the fabric of all dreams, he was alone at the well, staring down into the depths, a slight shimmer of light the only indication that water was present, deep down at the very bottom. He could feel the age of it, the power, a slight rippling vibration coming off the worn stone and resonating in his gut. He peered down the well again, feeling chills break out on his body, awe and something akin to terror awakening in his mind. He could see the glint of light on the surface; the twisting shadows making it look almost like a face.
What do you want?
The voice was older than time almost, ancient, reverberating up through the dark space of the well and shuddering against the inside of his chest.
"I don't know," Gavin whispered, almost afraid to speak, to give voice to his innermost desire.
What do you want? What do you really want?
The voice was deeper, penetrating, filling his chest and his ears and his mind. It was so immense, so pervading that it almost translated as painful. He broke underneath it, sinking down onto his knees, gripping the stones that began to crumble under his hands. He wanted his family back. He wanted Aaron back. And no one could give that to him.
And then he was falling, tumbling, into the black abyss, towards the watery embrace of the ancient God that he was foolish enough to whisper his wish to.
Gavin woke before he hit the water, jerking upright with a strangled gasp. His face was damp with sweat and his eyes, dry and overly wide, strained against the dark night.
"Bad dream?"
The voice was warm, amused and so achingly familiar that Gavin felt like he might break all over again. He sat for another moment, drew in another breath and steeled himself before turning his head.
