A bit of a divergence but I hope an interesting one. As @Bill W pointed out alteration comes from the Late Latin alterare. It seems that alterare hasn't strayed far from Rome because it is still the modern Italian verb meaning "to alter".

If one changed an altar,  would it be altaration?
