The word antagonistic comes from the Greek word antagonistēs, which means "opponent" or "competitor". Antagonistēs is derived from the words anti- ("against") and agonizesthai ("to contend for a prize"). +

Antagonistic was first recorded in 1625–35. It comes from the word antagonist plus the suffix -ic.   The word antagonistic was first used in English in the mid-1600s, as recorded in the writings of Ben Jonson. The word comes from the Latin word antagonisticus.

The English word antagonist comes from the Greek ἀνταγωνιστής – antagonistēs, "opponent, competitor, villain, enemy, rival," which is derived from anti- ("against") and agonizesthai ("to contend for a prize").  The word antagonist is related to the word protagonist, which comes from the Greek word protagonistes, meaning "main actor in a play".  It then came into the Late Latin (antagonsita), French (antagoniste), and English (antagonize).  

Protagonistes is made up of the words protos, meaning “first,” and agonistes, meaning “actor” or “competitor”.
