JamesSavik Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 In the movie Star Trek IV the Voyage Home (1986) the crew needed a material that could hold back tons of water and whales. Scotty's answer was a substance called transparent aluminum. Funny how the Star Trek franchise just keeps getting it right. Transparent Aluminum
hh5 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I knew about it back then ... just look it took 24 years for it to be realized ... it be nice to replace windshield of a car with that ... imagine keeping heat out of the car.
Mark Arbour Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Well of course we have transparent aluminum. Scotty gave that guy the formula.
DragonMando Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 lmao, agreed with Arbour, how can we *not* have it if Scotty told us all about it? Hmmm...$10/in.2? Might have to make me some invisible body armour if I ever get rich Seriously, that'd be sweeeeeeet. Transparent Master Chief armour. Oh yeah.
JamieD Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 (edited) I think there's also "Transparisteel" in Star Wars...maybe that will come too? Edited September 19, 2010 by JamieD
hh5 Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 I think there's also "Transparisteel" in Star Wars...maybe that will come too? I have to agree GLASS doesn't work in the hard environments and extreme temperatures
Phantom Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 Just to add a bit more to the Star Trek/FutureTech discussion... I came across a news article on slashdot discussing an international fusion reactor based in France: http://www.iter.org/ Fusion reactors were very common in Star Trek so it would be interesting to see how this turns out...
