Rilbur Posted July 6, 2011 Posted July 6, 2011 Yeah, they've existed for a while, even come down in price. There's a 3D printer capable of self-replication, and I think it's down to around 100$ in price.
thephoenix Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 hmm... oh the possibilities... take a picture of something off the web and "print" it...
Tomas Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 I just saw an article about using a 3D printer to print chocolate products. Research group develops 3D chocolate-printing technology 6 July 2011 Engineers at Exeter University are collaborating with partners at Brunel University and software developer Delcam to create a three-dimensional printer that can build products from chocolate. One Cheap Suit Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 (edited) 3D printer: $100 Print cartridge: $1,000,000,000,000 Edited July 7, 2011 by One Cheap Suit
Former Member Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 Interesting. I've heard about something like this in the making, but by using nano tech
Red_A Posted July 7, 2011 Posted July 7, 2011 There is a slightly older technique, which is based on Pen Plotting, and this takes a computer based 3D model and builds a number of layers into a complete 3D item. The ink from the pen plotter is a self curing plastic resin, and the thickness of the plastic is determined by the jet on the pen. This technique is cheaper than machining from aluminium and can prove prototype designs.
