Developmental psychology readings and studies show that a child who is a victim of mental and physical abuse by a loved one will often believe that there is something wrong with them that causes the abuse. As a result they don't tell anybody about the abuse because of this reason and the fact that hey love the family member too much. In Jim's case he thinks that if he tells his aunt she will see his 'flaw' in the same light as his father. Of course his aunt wouldn't hurt him but Jim is only fourteen and that's the way that his mind works.
