Hey! Hey! Here it is! I love this story. The nicknames are perfect and I love the idea behind the plot. The way the relationship between the two main characters evolves is realistic and, more than that, incredibly touching.

In a world ravaged by despair and an unspeakable curse, the Gods lie imprisoned and forgotten, their followers all but destroyed. When a merchant unexpectedly bestows kindness on a stranger, a series of even stranger events sweeps Mordred on a quest to kill a dragon, talk to the dead, and learn how to play the flute. On hold while I finish this up. My apologies for the long delay!

Chapter 21 Best Laid Plans "Ben?" He paused, a thought racing across his mind that if he just stayed silent maybe she'd give up and go away; but, no can do. This was his best friend he was talking about. They'd known each other since high school. Still .... "Ben?" Her voice grew sharper and he knew she'd spied the garden hose attached to the side of the house. "What the hell are you doing?" Grimacing, Ben sat back on his heels. Water from his bare feet soaked his shor

Chapter 18 To Have and to Hold Rick wasn't a heavy sleeper at the worst of times, and so it astonished him that in this moment, when he'd most needed to be alert, he'd slept so deeply. The logical side of his mind informed him that he was tired; too little sleep and too much stress over the last few days had his body on the edge of exhaustion. But this was Ben, and logic held no sway over the guilt in his heart. He'd not been there when Ben needed him. The pain-filled whimpers, hasti

Chapter 18 Lost & Found There was a TV, closet, dresser, and a battered table with two chairs by the lamp in the corner. There was a window with bars on the outside visible through the battered and bent blinds. Even if he could pause to draw breath and scream for help, he no longer had the voice. He'd screamed himself hoarse already with no effect. "Fuck," he whispered. And then he didn't have anymore breath for cursing. He woke up a few minutes later groggy from hyperventila

Chapter 18 Jumping at Shadows The phone rang, dragging Ben out of a weird dream. He didn't remember what it was about, other than the initial impression and he sat up groggily. There was light from the street, coming as a faded glow through the blinds. The time was around 3 a.m. and Ben scowled at the clock. Why was he awake? The ringing sound happened again, sending Ben out of bed in a flash. His sleepy brain fixated on the only person who would be calling him at this hour of nigh

Chapter 17 Ring Ring Cold. From the tips of his toes to the knuckles on his hand seeped awareness of the cold. Ben's nose practically burned but he didn't move. Somewhere nearby music played too softly to make out over the muttering and hammering. There were no curtains on the tall, picture window, the sky outside gray-white should have seemed cold but instead felt warm and cheery, juxtaposed as it was with the evergreens along the frame and big, fat snowflakes drifting down. "Why i

Chapter 16 Handcuffs Normally, Rick woke up completely and all at once. This time, however, Shelly was several minutes into an excited dialogue before Rick blinked himself awake long enough to realize that he was (a) awake, (b) in a hotel room, and © he'd answered his cell phone. The non-stop chattering threw him for a bit of a loop. In two weeks he hadn't had any contact with any of Ben's family or friends and now, after an awkward ten-minute conversation with Doug, all seemed as it'd

Chapter 15 Dance with Me When his phone went off during the meeting, Rick jumped, hand slapping the buzzing vibrator in his pocket. Several pairs of eyes glared at him. "Rick!" hissed Alice. Blushing, he fished the cell out of his pocket. His face paled when he saw the caller ID. He jumped up immediately, almost knocking over his chair in his haste. "Hello?" he asked breathlessly, striding quickly towards the door and out into the hallway. "Rick, it's Doug," he said unnecess

Chapter 14 The Letter This was exactly why Rick hated coming home. His relatives fell on him like sharks and bait. He'd answered all their questions a million times before and yet the cycle insisted on repeating itself. "Rick, how are you?" "Looking good, boy!" "When are you going to get tired of the Big City and come home?" "You still going on about that teaching nonsense?" "The military, Rick, what d'you think about them goings-on over there?" "What? No steady girl?" "When ar

Chapter 13 Goodbye Ben and Rick lay sprawled on the sofa-bed watching a movie. Or, that was to say Rick listened to the movie while he read. Ben lay between his legs, head pillowed on his thigh and hip, arms around his left leg. An old, thin blanket gave a semblance of comfort without being too warm. Rick's little tuxedo cat purred against Rick's neck where he lay sprawled along the back of the sofa. Lowering his book a moment, Rick gently and carefully, stroked fingertips over Ben'

Chapter 12 Doors When they arrived at the agency, Ben was slow to climb out of the car. "You sure you don't want me to come in with you?" Rick asked, peering up at him through the open passenger-side door. Ben grimaced and pulled at his shirt. He hadn't quite been able to convince himself to wear a tie -- like a bad, B-movie, anything around his neck gave him the creepy-crawlies, like the fabric was going to suddenly enlarge from x-ray radiation or something and strangle him while h

Chapter 11 Knowing is Half the Battle Rick woke to the alarm on his watch, fumbling groggily for where it would normally be, but he'd fallen asleep on the couch, the watch still on his wrist and not the nightstand where he normally placed it for bed. He pressed the buttons, groaning and rubbing at the crick in his neck. The alarm was his five minute warning before class started, but school was out for the summer; he didn't have to worry about that for another two and a half months. He p

Chapter 10 In the Dark Rick paused only long enough to shove feet in sandals and grab his keys before dashing out the door, down the stairs, and racing down the street. He dodged parked cars and cars inching along the crowded road, the old lady with her great dane, the young women with their toddlers, and the teenagers on their skateboards. He ran up the small hill, past the daycare center with its screaming kids, the dance studio, the pet store, and the little shopping plaza on the corn

Chapter 9 Never Talk About Politics or Religion Rick pulled into the driveway and turned off the ignition. Quietly, mindful of his sleeping passenger, he exited the car and grabbed the bags from the trunk before heading inside. Genny had been by regularly to tend to things; any mail not bills had been brought to the hospital for Ben. Although he'd thrown most out, there were a few cards he'd saved, and a wedding announcement he'd waved smugly at Rick. "That's a weekend in Palm Spring

Chapter 8 Truth Ben held his eyes closed. His mind stayed carefully blank, as if it, too, wished he were somewhere -- anywhere! -- else. He tensed, listening for footsteps, but all he heard was the ever-present beeping of the machines by his bedside and the unsteady patter of his own heart. Shivering, he pulled the quilt up and over his head, tugging on the IV line when that stuck on a fold of the blanket. A pillow over that muffled the machinery, but then he couldn't half-b

Chapter 7 Klingon Love Poetry Stepping out of the elevator on the floor he'd been directed to, Jazz paused. There was a good-sized lounge by the elevator, enclosed on three sides, with large couches, a t.v., and vending machines. To the right were the bathrooms and to the left was the nurse's station. He saw a woman he recognized from Rick's birthday party and went towards her. There was no recognition; she walked straight by with only a small, polite nod. When Rick missed practice

Chapter 6 Jimmy, Will, & Bob ... James .... Ben hadn't thought about James in years. Used to be, everything would remind him of the other boy. His smile, his laugh, his spitballs, his 'Just a little more, Ben!" or "Just a little longer!' when Ben wanted to turn back. Ben was almost eleven when he and Genny went to live with his grandmother. She'd tried to get him for years, but the system was on his mother's side. It wasn't until his mother's parents refused to have anything

Chapter 5 It's not About the Boat "You ready yet?" Ben kept typing. "I don't need a babysitter, you know." "How can you still be so grumpy? You know you enjoyed it." Who didn't have a dirty little fantasy of office sex? Certainly did wonders for the stress created by that little scene with Ben's asshole of an ex-boyfriend. "Fuck you," growled Ben without taking his eyes off the screen, "I'll take the bus." "Don't make me turn your computer off," he warned, only half-joking.

Chapter 4 Superman vs. Batman Business card in hand, Ben stared at his phone. The L.A. headquarters of Two Pair resided in a small, glass-plated office building near the corner of Hawthorne Blvd. and PCH. Their receptionist, Betty, gaily greeted clients from her desk in the waiting area. Decorated to be warm and friendly, a water-cooler rested in the corner by a potted plant in front of the large conference room. The blinds were open; no meetings currently in progress. A tiny kitche

Chapter 3 Does this Count as a Date? "Ben. Get up." "Mnnnnno." Rick sighed. He'd been up for over an hour, since the second trilling of the alarm. He'd had time enough to shower, dress, and walk to his apartment and back. Still Ben lay abed, burrowed under the blankets like a hibernating bear. There was only movement when the alarm went off, and only so much as an arm slipping free to slap the snooze again. For all that Ben had seemed near manic about this trip with Doug, he su

Chapter 2 Happy Birthday, Rick! Ben's searching hand smacked his alarm clock. Blinking and groaning when the sound didn't quit, he cracked open his eyes. Next to the small, black box was his cell phone. He grabbed it and flipped it open. "Fuck off, I'm not working today!" "Ben?" "... Shelly?" He sat up in bed, wincing and groaning with the sudden movement. "Everything okay? The baby?" "Is fine, I'm fine, everything's fine." "Then what're you bugging me for?" "Are .

Chapter 1: Dinner with Gran Introducing Ben & Rick Stumbling around the corner towards his apartment complex, arms laden with heavy groceries in their doubled-paper sacks, Ben saw a curious sight: a man, wearing what could only be described as a salmon-pink shirt. He had loose, white, draw-string pants and Berkenstocks, and stood next to Angie, the gate-guard, holding one end of a dark purple leash. On the end of the leash was a cat. A black and white cat, to be exact, which was c
