500 years ago two worlds collided: the World of Night and the World of Light. War followed. Now the forces of fate and destiny are once again on the move... A young half-demon struggles to do the bidding of his dark queen, new friendships are formed, and nothing is ever exactly as it seems. By the way, have you seen the chronicles? ~ The Toll of the Troll ~ The bridge was perfect. Perfectly perfect. At the foot of the vast mountain range on the edge of the Kingdom of Heere began a wide, rushing river that led to the sea. High above, in the peaks covered winter-to-spring-to-winter again by snow, were thick, crusty glaciers, crunching their way forward in tiny, unobservable movements. In places, the sun heated the ice and the glacier broke, but at the very bottom, where heat and pressure combined, water trickled

~ Gravity ~ They called it Pizza Planet, a combination pizza parlor and game hall. There were more games available than a carnival or arcade, from bumper cars and mini golf to laser tag and Pac-Man. It was the most popular hangout location in four counties. The people were every bit as varied: older folks bringing children or grandchildren, lovers out to have a good time, teens just messing around, people just trying to reconnect with their childhood, and more. Jason Alvarez had seen

Chapter 9 The first town they clattered up to was a fairly large trade town, accustomed to the many travelers who used that route. They had no need for a tinker, but Cy was able to trade some of the wagon's wares for fresh supplies. With his growing beard, travel grime, and the intermittent rain showers, he was a disheveled, soggy mess that he didn't think anyone would recognize, but he was worried about the lack of soldiers on the road so far. He had assumed that the Shah would have

Chapter 8 It stopped raining in the hours before dawn. Cy walked beside the tired horses in order to stay awake, hand on a halter to support him when he stumbled. Caked in mud clear up to his knees despite the cloak, he stared blearily up at the sky when the clouds parted briefly to reveal the moon beginning to sink below the horizon. Only the hard-packed dirt over stone beneath his feet had kept them on the road during the dark, rain-soaked night, and now Cy cast about for a good pl

Chapter 7 The storm broke with a BANG! of thunder. There was no rain at first, just the deafening silence after the first thunderclap where even the wind refused to blow. Then, in one great whoosh, the clouds roiling darkly above sucked up all the still, hot air that had crushed the city for the past week, and cold, moist air rushed in to fill the gap. The falconers jumped into action, abandoning their tasks to shove their way through the howling wind and check on the songbirds. The

Chapter 6 The aviary was a spooky place at night. The songbirds all went to sleep once the sun went down and although the falconers and their apprentices lived in a dormitory nestled against the wall, most ventured out into the city at night. There were no guards, and few wandered the grounds at night. There was no need. Only falconers were allowed into the aviary compound. They ate and bathed within the palace compound, and the apprentices all had chores similar to the palace servants.

Chapter 5 Cyrus stepped outside the birdcage that was his and Indivriar's home in the aviary and leaned for a moment against the glass. With all the doors closed and the heat through the floor, inside was as hot and wet as a steam house. Relief from the heat passed quickly as Cy's body adjusted to the normal summer weather outside. He wiped the sweat from his face with a grimace and peered back inside. Indivriar had appeared to be recovering in the first few days, but now his conditi

Chapter 4 Indivriar fell silent around what Cy estimated as the third day of traveling. He hadn't hardly made any sense prior to that, but the quiet was unnerving. Nothing Cy could do seemed able to keep him warm, because he kept shivering. The songbird's skin remained hot and dry to the touch, and he panted for breath against Cy's chest, only occasionally sucking on a moistened piece of blanket for water. The bard sang, as that appeared to give some comfort, and walked up and down t

Chapter 3 The day quickly settled into a routine. Cy sewed a makeshift sling with which to carry the baby close to his skin for warmth. He tied the teat he'd made to the edge, and then, with the songbird draped over his legs and the old leather chair at his back, Cy managed to doze off to the patter of rain on the tile roof. So alert was he for the slightest sound that indicated the baby's need for more milk, that the cottage door hit Cy's ears with the force of a cavalry charge. He

Chapter 2 Slamming the kitchen doors behind him, Cy leaned there, arms and legs trembling with weariness, and something else that turned his insides to mush. "What?" he half-whispered to the empty kitchen. "What just happened?" There was something incredibly eerie about a songbird being captivated by his music. Pressing cold, trembly fingers to his hot forehead, Cy swore never to go back ... except maybe to retrieve his harp .... "Blessed Day!" he exclaimed, kicking the door beh

~ Birds of Paradise ~ Cyrus Zadryar, Master Bard and Loremaster, halted his tired horse in front of a grand house. Built of the white stone brought upriver from Gyrslayn and heat-fired blue tile from Oarsdown, the house sparkled like fine porcelain in the late afternoon sun. The house sat nestled within, but apart from, a grand garden. Planned and overseen by several generations of gardeners, wondrous colors were to be seen at all times of the year. Rare ice blossoms from the lands b

still, a properly fit suit and tie is durned sexy!

Knowing how to tie a tie is a skill every man should know. I prefer regular ties myself. Bow ties really only go with tuxes, and I'd rather never again be in a penguin suit.

Ch. 3 ~ Unleashed: Part I
Dark commented on Renee Stevens's story chapter in Ch. 3 ~ Unleashed: Part I
Ack! Cliffhanger! That's mean. LOL The slow pace of the story certainly suits Richard's style. I like the slow progression of their romance and it leaves me wishing to learn more about their friendship as well. Seems like we're skimming the surface of their thoughts/feelings -- it's like I can see the cookies but not taste them. haha. Chapter 3 is certainly interesting! Urban Simon meets the outdoors. I can picture the cabin very well and it made me grin. What was Simon's reaction? He seems uncertain about being there without Richard. It shall be fun to see how he adapts to a tech-free weekend, especially if the two wind up having company. -
Just one cat, also a rescue.

~ The Phantom ~ Epilogue Nico opened the mailbox and set a collection of letters inside, tied with a red, satin bow. He tucked a card in the middle, tugged at the ribbon another second, and then closed the mailbox. Looking back over his shoulder, he gave Marcell a sad smile, nodded, and then stepped away, leaning heavily upon his crutches. Ever since waking up after the Lair, his gimp leg ached and did not want to bend and straighten properly. Outside, he held onto the car door

Chapter 5 Gerry followed the white rabbit out of the bowels of the Lair to the main level and beyond. They encountered no one; the rabbit occasionally paused or backtracked, but they avoided detection. However he was doing it, Gerry was grateful for the Phantom's presence. A touchscreen monitor was beside the last door and Gerry glanced to it hopefully. <I can go no further> came the expected words, filling Gerry with an odd sort of disconnected loss. <Go around the back of th

Chapter 4 Griping about the lack of civility received at their last place of visit, Mark paused for Gerry to make a comment, but heard nothing. He stopped, turning around as he tracked his missing partner. Gerry crouched on the sidewalk staring at a black piece of plastic. Was that his blackberry? And was it ... smoking? He started back, when movement out of the ordinary for a casual, week-day evening caught his eye. Having honed those instincts dutifully since his freshman year as a journ

Chapter 3 Someone wept, silent tears loud in the hushed quiet. Gerry walked down a long corridor, doors every few feet. White walls, white doors. He opened one and went through, into another corridor like the first. His shoes tapped against the linoleum. "Hello?" he called. The weeping stopped, for a heart beat or two, and then began again. Gerry followed the sound, but every door led to another duplicate corridor. Sometimes the weeping grew louder, other times quieter. H

Chapter 2 "Can I stay at your place?" "Huh?" Mark looked over at Gerry. "What-ever would you want to do that for?" "I thought we could, you know, order in, watch a movie, just hang out." "I'm going out --" "Sure, that's fine, too." "-- With a girl." "Oh." "What is with you, mate?" He looked back at the road. "Is something going on?" 'YES!' was what Gerry wanted to say, but everyone already thought him nuts. He didn't want to add his best friend to the list.

Chapter 1 "Can't you, like, kneel or something?" Gerry rolled his eyes. "We've been over this, Mark. The footage isn't going to come out anyway." Nobody had ever caught Hellhound on film. "Yeah, but I can't have you always looming over me; it looks bad." He peered up at his partner as they walked back to their news van. "Why do you have to be so tall?" Gerry sighed. Pulling out his keys, he unlocked the van and climbed inside to put up the equipment. He felt the engine r

Chapter 9 They gave Gerry fifteen minutes, but they dared wait no longer. Viktor and Irv left first, the small man grabbing the cop by the hand and dragging him away. Mark and Bryce went the opposite way. They met up again at the Lair, blending in with the other patrons spilling out of the restaurants and outside venues into the garden. Gerry had told them about a possible hidden entrance, so while Mark waited for the other two, Bryce scouted around the edge of the building. He did i
