I find this chapter was excellent at setting up potential conflict for Calvert and Granger - but also finally resolving the biggest conflict between them - George's faithfulness. After Granger's handling of the French battle and the popularity he will have with the public, it's fairly certain he will be promoted to Commodore upon his return. In that case, he will be in a position to select a Captain to carry his flag and Calvert seems to be the ideal choice. They would finally be able to sail together without the threat of being separated - something both of them would relish. Calvert is at the bottom of the Captain's list without a chance for promotion for years. As for Gaitling, I can't see him winning Calvert's heart over Granger and Caroline was right - he owes everything to Granger. His selfishness will eventually turn off Calvert.
Excellent chapter - can't wait for the next one!
