    Chapter 22

Wynthorpe steels itself, aye—but no man within those walls pretends the trial ahead will be light. A prince spurned is a perilous foe, for wounded pride oft swings a sharper sword than any forged of iron. The men and boys gather, shoulders squared, yet each knows the cost that waits upon the field. Such battles do not ask—they take, and they take dearly. Across the realm, King John clings to life with the desperation of a man who has spent his years fearing the judgment that now draws near. His body fails him, yet his will claws at the dark, unwilling to yield. And still the question hangs like a pall: who will stand for a child‑king, should the crown fall upon such young brows? Loyalty grows thin when the throne itself trembles. Louis, for his part, counts John’s death as the turning of the key to England’s gates. But death is a fickle ally. Some may flock to him, aye—but others will whisper that the French prince hastened the king’s end, and in such whispers lies the seed of ruin. A crown won by suspicion is a crown that burns the brow. Thus the realm stands upon a knife’s edge. Wynthorpe prepares. The princes scheme. The king fades. And the fate of England waits upon choices not yet made, and courage not yet tested.

    Chapter 22

Thank you for such a vivid and thoughtful review. You’ve captured the very heart of this chapter—the sense of a kingdom holding its breath while storms gather on every horizon. King John’s desperation, Louis’s cold patience in London, and the uneasy quiet across the marshlands all press upon these young men as they try to find their footing in a world tilting toward war. I’m especially glad you felt the weight of Ronan and Tomas’s private moment, and Kaylen’s struggle to forge boys into something resembling a united force. Their trials are only beginning, and the choices they make in the coming days will shape not only their fates, but the fate of England itself. The tension you sensed is exactly what they feel: the dread of what approaches, and the uncertainty of who will strike first. We stand with them now, waiting for the storm to break. More is coming soon
