    Chapter 1

I encourage reading all of the books of Anne McCaffrey on Pern. These stories, written decades ago had hints of gay characters, and sometimes more than hints in them, showing a society that for the most part didn't care if two dragonriders were weyrmates. A turn is about a year so the Red Star's elliptical orbit brings it close enough shed thread spores into Pern's gravitational pull every couple of centuries. If you take a chance on reading the books, you will eventually find out why and how - but here's a spoiler: Three of the stars in the night sky near the equator aren't stars. They are how humans came to this planet.
  2. “N’sor apologized to you?” B’rrel asked three days later as they relaxed in their weyr after the evening’s entertainment. J’shon had played three sets with the Harpers before begging off to return to his new weyr. It still seemed almost magical, riding Liliath up to their home in the mid-level of the Weyr’s southern wall. They had good shade in the evenings, and their weyr was cooler than those poor souls along the northern and eastern faces that had to deal with the hot sun’s heat even after t
  3. J’shon had won his bet regarding Zoeth’s next rising, and with four more marks from K’mer had managed to send his mother a silver necklace with a good-sized sapphire surrounded by miniature green and brown dragons. She’d been so pleased by the gift that she’d managed to send a message back to the Weyr thanking them for their generosity. When they’d turned sixteen and fifteen respectively, she’d sent them several packages containing small wood carvings of their dragons. As scarce as wood was
  4. J’shon fingered the shoulder rope he was wearing with a bit of nervousness. It was made with golden twine, the symbol of Igen Weyr, twisted around green, the color if his Liliath. The single bar and knots on the shoulder rope declared he was a junior weyrling. Even after six months, he was still trying to get use to being Weyr instead of Hold. You worry again. Liliath said to him with disapproval tart in her voice. I’m sorry dear. He replied to her silently. When he’d first Impressed his
  5. The Lower Caverns hummed with the crowd that filled it following the Hatching. Despite the fact that it was hours after the event, most of the people who had come to watch newly-hatched dragons pair up with humans who would be their rider were still there. Huge platters of roasted meat, tubers, legumes, and just about every other food stuff ever made on Pern filled the tables, and the three brand new weyrlings found that their entrance wasn’t unnoticed. “You boys finally woke?” D’kov, the blu
  6. “What?” Jashon asked as Berrel’s eyes widened. “Do you hear that?” Berrel asked with alarm. “You mean that humming?” Jashon asked. They were in Berrel’s room on the lower level of the Weyr bowl. It was early morning, and if they had been outside and above the Weyr they might have been able to see the tip of Pern’s yellow sun just touching the eastern horizon. “Yes!” Berrel hissed excitedly. Jashon had been in the Weyr for five days now, and if he had to be honest, he’d have had to admit
  7. “Wake up, son.” Kapian’s voice filtered into Jashon’s consciousness and he roused himself, wrinkling his nose at the smell that was filling his nostrils. “That’s it boy, wake up now.” “Father?” Jashon asked weakly and another stab filled him as he remembered what had happened before he passed out. His cheeks flushed with the shame running through him, but he opened his eyes to see his father’s eyes looking at him with concern. He was lying on his own bed in the room he shared with Komer. “I’
  8. Thread is coming. “Thread is coming.” The dragonrider’s voice echoed the thoughts in the young holder’s head and he shuddered at the sounds ringing in his head with a deep baritone voice he’d never imagined before. The Harpers sang that Pern’s ancient enemy was on its way back to ravage the green hills and valleys of Pern’s Northern Continent, but Jashon’s father had told him over and over again they were just stories. Holder Kapian was quite certain that Pern was due for another Long Interv
  9. [sharedmedia=gallery:images:7756] The world of Pern, as created by Anne McCaffrey have long been a favorite of mine. She has rather graciously granted permission for the posting of fan fiction stories online in accordance with guidelines and rules listed at http://www.annemccaffrey.net/index.php?page_id=20 If you have never read any of her stories, I encourage you to purchase them from an online retailer or your local bookstore. Like Anne McCaffrey herself, I recommend starting with her original
  10. FanFiction set in Ann McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern world. The story follows Jashon. He's the son of a holder that is not following tradition, which, as always, leads to grief and discontent

    Chapter 36

I think the bad side of building up to a final battle and then getting what amounts to a skirmishing action may not have been the best method - but I'm glad you still enjoyed the story!@

    Chapter 36

Thanks for the long review. Regarding Selenay and the love of husband and son - she could never lose that even were she to have stabbed them in the gut and watched them die. It's a weakness of both men and makes absolutely no sense, I agree. Every time I tried to get the character to act differently, there was this firm push that no, they would not turn their backs on her. As for Dalen's circle of friends, any sequel would have to include them in a wide variety of capacities. Dalen's out on the Western frontier, pushing forwards with plans to counteract a years-off resumption of hostilities, Barts in the Valdemar capitol trying to keep things together and Seleney is in Burnham, capitol of the Northern Alliance trying to keep the nations together with her husband, Lord General of the Alliance Armies. Then we introduce an ancient enemy of Valdemar's allies and some new characters and all hell breaks loose.

    Chapter 36

Sorry no epilogue for this story. Sequel is in progress. I think writing the epilogue for Rider's Pride left me so emotionally drained I put off writing epilogues for a while...

    Chapter 36

Bart and Dalen ARE bonded. They are now brothers-in-law! As for sequel - if I can continue working on the sequel I've restarted we'll get some of those answers.
  15. Thanks for the compliments Jor. When a story is finished reposting, I get asked which one I want to post next. This next one will be Dreams of Humanity. I have no real criteria for choosing so if someone started a voting thread in my author forum I'd look at it and take it into consideration. No promises on final decisions though. Blistering Imperfections is a story that was never posted to GA. I started the Yahoo Group when I left GA as a place for people to find my stories and posted parts of Blistering Imperfections as a thank you to the readers there. No new members are being accepted to the yahoo group and eventually it too will be going away. What happens to Blistering Imperfections is something still being discussed with GA. One thing I should note is that even after being posted I am constantly giving small tweaks to these stories. When someone notes a spelling error (and since I'm rereading most of them as they post I'm seeing them too) I can go in on GA and correct it. What I found when I left GA was that most of the stories on my computer drive and that other people provided were actually outdated. They included none of the corrections I'd made to the story in GA - so what you're seeing here are the better versions. Not perfect, and if you see something that needs fixing please speak up.
  16. I think I rewrote this first chapter about 10 times before setting it on this feeling. How to introduce this new world, its clones, our main characters, etc. all were issues I tried to deal with in the different versions. Finally I decided on this moment, when our young clone finds himself like a fish out of the water - in an environment he's not been trained for and must adapt.
  17. I love that! A new old one. It's kind of funny but I find myself rereading these stories as they are being reposted - something I've never done before. This way I get to enjoy it with new, and old readers.
  18. Garret Lars was a clone designed and created to command troops. When the war ended suddenly, political manipulation landed him in a geisha house. He's not there long before the truth sets him free.

    Chapter 36

I wanted the big ending as well - but big endings end in big deaths for lots of people and if they can do it without killing, Heralds usually take that route.

    Chapter 36

To understand the vrondi, do a simple exercise. First close your eyes and imagine there are people staring at you. After a few minutes, there are more people staring at you, or at least that's what it feels like. Open your eyes and look around and see the room is empty. Now fast forward a day, a week, or a month. If you're smart and know how to detect vrondi, you'll figure out that's what is looking at you. Then you can attack them, but if you've never studied the summoning of air elementals, you'll never figure them out. Now add in the final element of the spell. While they're bugging the crap out of you by staring continuously at you, some of them are going looking for the nearest Herald. Now add in the plague to the mix...who wants to stick around anymore?
  22. I really like being able to post stories like this. Too bad it's not really possible to write them this fast!

    Chapter 36

When I got to this point in writing the story, I realized that most of what was happening would have actually ruined the ending because I couldn't ignore the build-up in writing about some more of Dalen's day-to-day life. In the end I decided to not go into the start of the plague, Dalen's trip to k'Valdemar where he met with Gavin's parents and the healers, etc. They were all parts of the story that could have been expanded or left on the cutting room floor and I decided to leave them. Instead I decided to give a little bit of focus directly on Selenay. She more than deserved the ire of so many people. However we didn't see all the events in her life that changed her, so I wanted to give a little bit of time to show the changes in her and that they were genuine changes. In its own way her story would make for a great book as well as a story of tragedy and redemption.

    Chapter 36

You're welcome Terry and thanks for the review. Gavin's arrival at the end was planned from the beginning. As I mentioned in another reponse, if he'd shown up too early things would indeed have been far different and probably not for the better. Dalen had some growing up to do - and while it's not quite stated in the story, Gavin had some maturing to do as well. Most of his development was off-page, but let's just say that it was almost a record for him to take more than a day or two to get someone into his bed. Dalen was a work of patience for him, something he wasn't experienced with before being Chosen.

    Chapter 36

I'm sure Dalen would have preferred some more blasting, but alas it didn't quite work that way! Thank you for your compliments and reviews!
