    Chapter 21

The last we heard of Paet was that he was on circuit in the North. Right now the North is probably the safest part of Valdemar as a whole - so not asking after Paet might reflect Dalen's thoughts that at least one friend is safe.

    Chapter 29

Lord Mekeal Ashkevron had the look of almost every Ashkevron that had ever lived. It was almost like the gods had created a mold called Ashkevron and stamped out every newborn child in the family from the same mold. Sure, there were exceptions, and over the years the average height of the Ashkevron mold had increased, but by and large all the Ashkevrons looked alike. The men were broad-shouldered, almost stocky despite their height and had square faces with prominent lines. Their semi-curly ha

    Chapter 28

“Huh?” Dalen asked as he pushed his way back to consciousness. Opening his eyes he saw the semi-familiar green fronds that grew around his bed in Burnham Vale and the green ivy that hung from the banisters of that bed. What was unusual about it was the white horse’s head that was resting at perpendicular angles on the far side of the bed and the glowing blue eyes filled with worry. It’s about time you woke up, sleepyhead. Jadev told him in mental tones overlaid with a great deal of worry. Dalen

    Chapter 27

It's important to remember that Dalen is still very young. He loves his mother and sometimes that means he looks at her with rose-colored glasses. Notice that Nevin wasn't too quick in agreeing with him?

    Chapter 26

Let's add to the things to think about: What was Selenay thinking as she watched her son walk away to do his duty, no matter the cost?

    Chapter 26

It is important to remember that the Haighlei are extremely regimented a society. If it doesn't fit in their regimented structure, it doesn't belong and must be eliminated. Their society only allows change once every 20 years - and that should give you an idea of how long the conflict with them can last.

    Chapter 26

If you look back at the early chapters you see that Heralds, Bards, Healers, Mages, and Artificers all take some classes together as well as classes specific to their collegium. A history class will have students from all branches together. This chapter is a prime example of why they take those classes together. Likewise Heralds and the Guards often train together in weapons classes, and in the field Heralds are often deployed along with Guard troops. Remember when Prince's Retreat was being established? The Guards knew what to expect from a Mage (or Herald) and they worked together. This is one of Valdemar's greatest strengths.

    Chapter 26

Dalen often likes to hold things close and is a strong mindspeaker quite well aware there are other mindspeakers out there. He won't risk them picking up things from this thoughts, or telegraph his moves too much. Sure, as soon as they knew he was there the Haighlei had to know he was going to try something. Still, they didn't get enough hints from him to forestall it and that made all the difference.

    Chapter 27

“The primary node is empty.” Dalen said flatly as the Permanent Gate shut down with the last of the Heralds being transferred to Prince’s Retreat. First through that Gate had been Prince Dellinar, Heir to the Throne and King’s Own Herald (trainee) Bart Firkin. Both had been protesting that they shouldn’t be first, but Dalen’s own glare from where he rested at a nearby table silenced them. “How are you holding up?” Nevin asked him gently and Dalen shook his head. Master-level Herald-Mage Thomas

    Chapter 26

The worst part about his plan was that Dalen didn’t know exactly when it would go into motion. Certain things were always difficult to predict, and if he’d made the plan too complicated, then it would never work. At least that’s what the Heralds kept telling him during that week whenever he’d discussed things with them. His first concern had been to make sure that the confined Heralds would be able to perform their part, and they were not only capable but ready. Then he had to get a message ou

    Chapter 25

Get use to those emtions. I just had to go and reread 26 again before making a comment and there I was finding myself so totally rivited by the chapter that I totally forgot what I was looking for...

    Chapter 25

There's an old saying Dalen might have heard "Don't give orders you know won't be obeyed." Or maybe he believes his mother is irrelevant at this point in time...it's so hard to know.

    Chapter 24

I would not be surprised if a Bard decided to write a song titled "The Tragedy of Princess Selenay" after this was all over.

    Chapter 24

Farvenal is a minor lackey - more of a gatekeeper than anything and Dalen doesn't need to worry about gatekeepers...well not that much.

    Chapter 25

After his revelation of having been Chosen, Dalen expected the man to lash out in a mage attack, or maybe even a physical attack. What Dalen didn’t expect was the slumping of the man’s shoulders as his anger faded and the look of resignation on his face. He’d heard the Black Kings folk were unexpressive, but this man’s expressions were easy to read. Certainly they might have been too slight for many people to notice, but Dalen had grown up with his mother. “Congratulations, Dalen.” His mother

    Chapter 24

Boldness came in many different ways, and had a wide variety of results. Dalen could remember being told of Ambassador Karlkist ordeal being kidnapped while traveling back to Sunhame. The man literally preached to his captors day and night, and when they stuffed a gag in his throat, began using his powerful Mindspeech to continue his sermon regarding the Sunlord Vkandis. In the end, they had returned him to the nearest Karsite City and threw themselves upon the mercy of the local militia.

    Chapter 23

You're welcome. I'm glad the story is staying enjoyable. I just want to note as well that these are not cliffhangers. A cliffhanger would make you wait a week before the next chapter so they don't qualify no matter what anyone says!

    Chapter 23

I have to say, reading this review left me chuckling and full of happiness after a very long day. It's uplifting to see someone enjoying a story I wrote. What's very interesting is how spot on your analysis of Diers is in this review. A stronger personality resists the process longer and makes a weaker mental slave. Weaker personalities are converted quicker and are then actually stronger in their resolve afterwards. I will say that I think the next chapter is worth the wait.

    Chapter 23

“How may the Healers help you this evening?” A polite young woman wearing the pale green of a Trainee Healer asked Dalen as he stepped inside the Healer’s Hall welcoming hall. This area was always staffed by trainees who would see people that came here for help. There were probably a dozen Healers in private practice around Haven, but Healer’s Hall always kept their doors open for everyone. A Crown grant ensured they had enough money to operate, so all they ever charged was enough to recov
