Sasha pushed the door open and padded inside the quiet apartment. “He’s probably asleep,” he whispered, and Nick nodded. They kicked off their wet shoes and walked down the dim hallway to Gabriel’s bedroom. The door was left ajar and they could see that he was sleeping soundly. Sasha sighed in relief. “He’s fine. Come on.” He put a hand on Nick’s back briefly to lead him to his own bedroom. Sasha closed the door and flicked on the light. Surprisingly, he didn’t feel tired at all. Maybe it ha

It was Saturday night and Sasha had to work at the stupid Espress coffee shop. His colleague was tired of doing all the weekend night shifts, so Sasha had gotten stuck with it. 00:06, the digital numbers flashed on the cash register. Tomorrow would be the first quarter of the moon. And then in a week, almost the full moon. Sasha wouldn’t be alone this time. He had been seeing Hazel and they were becoming friends. She would spend the full moon with him and show him all her favorite spots in Cent

Cyan’s arguments were pretty convincing. One: Riley was already dead, so this time Cyan didn’t have to kill anyone for Nick to bring them back. Two: Riley actually wanted this. Cyan had already talked to him and everything. If Nick said no, he would feel like an asshole for taking that away from Riley—and by ‘that’ he meant being alive. Three: Cyan said that since Riley was someone who had been through a lot—Purgatory and Hell, according to Cyan—and who already knew about the whole necromance

In a dream Nick found himself on top of a mountain. The view was breath taking; all snowy mountain peaks, dark blue skies and clouds that seemed to spread forever, shrouding the world in white. Everything seemed so vast and infinitely beautiful from up here. He wasn’t afraid. It felt peaceful. He thought he was alone. But then he heard steps creeping up behind him and he turned around. At first he thought— “Sasha?” This person looked so much like him. But upon taking a better look Nick reali

Shane was seriously starting to get on his nerves. On Sunday morning, Nick was just minding his own business, making some tea. He kept yawning; he hadn’t been able to catch up on his sleep properly. The night had been rough. He just kept making weird dreams he couldn’t even remember, then going back to sleep, then waking up again and checking his phone only to see stupid annoying numbers like 3:36, 4:05, 4:41 AM. Followed by an episode of sleep paralysis, during which his demon father, whom Nic

“You.” Lucas jabbed a finger toward Raven. “You promoted him,” the finger flicked toward Cyan, “when there are plenty others that deserve it more.” Lucas’s voice was composed and surprisingly soft, and he spoke with a Spanish accent. Raven stepped forth. His arms, clad in leather guards, were crossed against his bare chest. The silvery light emanating from the ceiling caught bluish highlights in Raven’s black hair and wings. “You mean like you?” Raven said to Lucas. Laughter vibrated across t

Liv and Lucas might indeed deserve some spanking. Thank you so much for reviewing ;-)

Jay’s long necklaces dangled over his snug black t-shirt as he poured tequila into twelve shot glasses. Yeah. Twelve. Nick stood with Sasha at one end of the long, slick black bar counter. They had claimed this section of the bar as their own, as it seemed Sasha had decided they were getting drunk tonight—considering he had ordered twelve shots and all. “Didn’t you say you were working tomorrow morning?” Nick asked. Sasha made a show of ignoring him completely. Jay produced a bowl with a b

It was Friday night. Nick was getting ready to go out. He just needed to be around people, to feel normal, to see his friends. “They’re having a special electronic music night at Laid-Back. I’m not missing that,” Nick told Shane. Nick was looking in the tall mirror behind his bedroom door. He wore gray skinny jeans with rips in them—stylish ones—and a black vest. With nothing under the vest. Shane was keeping him company, for some reason. Music blasted from Nick’s laptop speakers and filled

Nick was meeting Liv on his day off. She had invited him over at her apartment. She lived on the Upper East Side. Nick was ready early so he took a walk around Central Park. It wasn’t that bad this time of year. Even though it was still cold outside, some green was finally returning to the trees. The fresh wind was all right today actually; not too cold, for once. And the sky was a nice, clear blue shade. Nick walked with his hands in his pockets, keeping a fast pace. Last night he hadn’t been

Sasha didn’t even turn on all of the lights at the pool. He said he liked it better like this—dim and calm. This way it made it seem different from when he had to work here. Apparently, he often came here at night to swim and it helped him relax. Well Nick didn’t feel relaxed at all. The strong smell of chlorine made him feel sick to his stomach. “What are you waiting for? Get changed,” Sasha said, putting down his sports bag and towel on a bench. Sasha just wore his swimming trunks—the sport

Thanks I'm glad you find it interesting :-) More will be revealed on reapers and hell as the story unfolds, with a fair amount of hints on their vulnerability in the next few chapters.

When Nick got back from work Shane urged him to his bedroom because apparently Nick just had to watch some video. According to Shane it was hilarious. “Not another My Little Pony parody, please, Shane…” “But this one is so funny! You’ll like it, I promise! You need to laugh, seriously. You’ve been looking so depressed ever since that food poisoning thing you had.” Shane had multi-colored pillows on his bed and also a giant Fluttershy plushie worth several h

“I'll bring him back before midnight.” The demon winked at Sasha as he pulled his hood over his face. Then a thin veil of black smoke enveloped him, and he disappeared. Sasha blinked, and saw that the smoke had dissipated rapidly, like he’d imagined the whole thing. Nick’s body remained, but he was gone, too. His spirit was gone. “Shit.” Sasha dropped to his knees and felt for Nick’s pulse. It was slow. But it was there. He breathed out in relief.

Nick managed to get up and go to work even after all the craziness. And it was easier than he’d thought. For one, he felt better; he had more energy. He had slept well, and eaten breakfast. His roommate had noticed, too. “You look… different,” Shane had said earlier, studying him. “Better. Less tired.” And he had gone back to playing Diablo 3 on his laptop. The tattoo and piercing parlor was a small place flanked by two bigger buildings, just a block away f

“Seriously, what happened? What did you do? Who was that guy?” Everything was kind of blurry now, but Nick still remembered everything that went down. He had never felt so vulnerable before. And Sasha was still a complete stranger. He stood now facing Nick, on the other side of the kitchen island. Sasha had made coffee. Nick wasn’t drinking his—who drank coffee this late at night? He just clutched the mug between his hands for warmth. “What about those… vis

Outside wasn’t safe, either. Nowhere was safe. Everywhere he saw blood. And he saw people becoming deformed, their shapes elongating, surrounded by shadows. He fell on his knees, trembling. In front of him stood the man he had seen in his dreams—the one with the black hood covering his face. There was an added detail now: a sword, sheathed and attached to his back with a leather strap. Nick could see its black hilt. There was a tiny red snake curling around it. “Why are

Black skies loomed over the city where they should have been blue. He saw monsters where normal people stood and walked in the street. Blood instead of skin. Fire instead of eyes. Black smoke in the wind. Carrying the scent of ashes. “Are you okay?” Nick Russell heard someone say from behind. He blinked and turned around but there was no one there. People walked past him on the sidewalk. Cars drove by noisily. Nick looked up. The sky was back to normal. A cloudless, dar
