    Chapter 8

8 Despite clearly having a headache from being thrown roughly against the bar counter, Viko carried Micah all the way to Blake’s car outside. Micah wanted to tell him that he could probably walk, but he still had tape on his lips, which made it difficult. The car was a black BMW M6, no less – stolen of course. They drove to Fifth Avenue, Micah feeling dizzy from the pain in his arm. His wrists were still tied behind his back, too, so that restricted his movements and made it even worst.

    Chapter 7

7 They returned to the apartment. Josh was out, probably at school, either playing basketball or sleeping in class. Florence was in the hall, giggling as she followed Mike to their shared bedroom. She wore only a tank top and pajama shorts, and her pixie hair was messy. “Did you clean the kitchen?” asked Skylar. “We will later!” Mike waved with his hand, smiling like he didn’t have a care in the world. “I promise!” She could tell he was lying without using her sixth sense. “Do you guy

    Chapter 6

Skylar was waiting for Blake at the breakfast restaurant. It was 8 a.m. She was tired but she couldn’t sleep. After talking with Micah all night, she had left him sleeping with Mayrin on her double bed. So not only did she not have a bed to sleep on, she also felt so confused and overwhelmed by the recent events that she couldn’t possibly rest. She had called Blake, telling him they had to meet right away. Normally she would’ve invited him over to her apartment to save money, and she would’ve c

    Chapter 5

5 Micah was lying down on his four-poster bed with his new boyfriend, his trance music playlist coming out of his computer speakers at low volume. His cat Clover slept on the computer chair and Leaf sat on the windowsill, red curtain hiding him partly, so that only his furry tail was visible. “Clover,” called Micah, extending his arms as though hugging his cat from a distance. The Bengal cat’s ears pricked but he remained motionless on the computer chair. Micah gave up. “What a silly n

    Chapter 4

4 Pale morning sunlight shone through the living room windows, lighting up the wood panel walls. Freshly showered and clothed in simple black jeans and thin white v-neck tee, selected from the stuff she had left in her old bedroom, Skylar walked down the stairs. She held the polished wood railing with a hand, ruffling her damp hair with the other so it would curl. It was a force of habit more than anything. Her mind was elsewhere. Mayrin was already sitting on the beige couch. She looked

    Chapter 3

3 They could hear sounds of Skylar’s roommates in the background; explosions from Josh’s video games, and laughter from the young couple’s bedroom, maybe they were watching some comedy movie. Skylar’s heart was thumping rapidly, as she tried to figure out if she could detect lies in Mayrin’s voice or expression. “You say you swore off magic, but you still like to get into people’s minds, don’t you?” “It’s not like that,” Skylar said defensively, “it’s like hearing or eyesight. I can’t

    Chapter 2

2 After walking across Central Park and Times Square, still fascinated by New York’s lights at night even though she had lived here for three months now, Skylar gave up and took the subway to the West Village. She looked up Sound and Blood online after getting off the train. As soon as she managed to get some kind of internet connection, she saw that they had a facebook page, inviting people to come check out the new underground club ‘if they dared.’ Apparently it was some sort of punk,

    Chapter 1

1 The screenplay would be about unrequited love. This much had been agreed upon. With her elbow on the table, fist tucked under her chin, Skylar looked outside the coffee shop window as though the lively, day time Manhattan would give her the inspiration she lacked. Across the small round table at which she sat, her best friend—an aspiring actor—cleared his throat loudly. “How about,” he said, thin fingers fiddling with his scarf, “my character, struggling with his sexuality, dates the sis
