Today, we know π to well over the trillionth decimal place. It is a number that has shown up throughout mathematics, so it is no surprise that mathematicians have been dealing with the number for millennia.

The mathematicians of the Ancient world observed that the circumference of a circle was just over three times the diameter. So, they set out to estimate the value of π… and began a centuries long journey to take π from being “just over 3” to “3.14159265... etc.”

Throughout the world, various methods were devised to approximate π, however, the one I’ll be focusing on is the method developed by Archimedes.

He knew that the perimeter of an inscribed polygon would be less than the circumference, and the perimeter of a circumscribed polygon would be greater than the circumference.

So, he used this principle to work out a way in approximating π. He inscribed a hexagon on a circle, calculated the lengths of the hexagon’s sides, and then calculated its perimeter. He then doubled the sides of that hexagon, to get a dodecagon. And repeated the process of calculating its side length and perimeter.

And he repeated that process for a 24-gon, then a 48-gon, and finally a 96-gon.

Ah, but wait! He wasn’t done, because he then circumscribed a hexagon on the circle, and repeated the entire process. Archimedes was able to calculate the perimeters as 223/71 for the inscribed 96-gon and 22/7 for the circumscribed 96-gon.

Meaning, π was somewhere in between those two numbers, or in mathematical notation:

    223/71 < π < 22/7

And since both fractions begin as 3.14 in decimal form, Archimedes found the first three digits of π.

    ******

While Archimedes, was the first to use this method, he certainly wasn’t the last. Which brings us to Ludolph van Ceulen, a Dutch mathematician from the 16th Century.

This man gave the most accurate approximation of π up to that point, all thanks to Archimedes’ method.

The only difference was that he started with a square, instead of a hexagon.

The following is to give you an idea of what he did:

First, consider the circle above. We will be inscribing and circumscribing polygons on it.

The perimeter of the inscribed square is about 2.83, and that of the circumscribed square is 4. Which gives us the first inequality:

    2.83 < π < 4

The perimeter of the inscribed octagon is about 3.06, and that of the circumscribed octagon is about 3.31. Which gives us the second inequality:

    3.06 < π < 3.31

The perimeter of the inscribed hexadecagon (16-gon) is about 3.12, and that of the circumscribed 16-gon is about 3.18. Which gives us the third inequality:

    3.12 < π < 3.18

As you can see, these inequalities hone in on π, eventually getting the digits of π as you continue doubling the sides of the inscribed and circumscribed polygons.

As for van Ceulen, he doubled the sides until he had 262-gons. And with that, he found π to the first 35 decimal places:

    3.14159265358979323846264338327950288

This was an impressive achievement. So impressive in fact, that for a time, π was called the Ludolphine Number in Germany.

    ******

Of course, this record would be surpassed over the next couple centuries, when mathematicians began using infinite series to find π (where before they could only find tens of digits, they could now find hundreds).

And those records were broken during the last several decades, thanks to computers, and we now know π to well over a trillion decimal places.

We have certainly come a long way.

If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them.

    Hey everyone!

There is this site, that I used to visit a lot when I was sixteen or seventeen. Well, if Literotica and Nifty had children together, this site would have been the naughty one so, that should give y'all an idea on what the site is like

Many of its stories weren't really that great. Heck, a lot of them were more porn than plot However, like Literotica and Nifty, there were gems here and there.

One of those gems, is the reason for this blog

Back in May 2013, I came across a new story on there. At the time, there were only several chapters posted, but the story description already had my interest. So, I read the chapters and I absolutely loved it!

What is so cool is that the author was still in high school, graduation only a few weeks away. I remember reading a note he wrote at the end of a chapter saying, "This is my first time writing anything other than an essay for class." I was (and still am) in awe of his ability At the time, he was one of the few authors on the site that made an effort to have correct grammar and an actual plot to boot!

    Fast forward two years later...

He has come a long way. Where once he made mistakes here and there in his early chapters, he quickly got the hang of it and today, I consider his writing to be superb. That story has now become a trilogy of sorts, and he is now on the final book and now only needs one more chapter before it is finished. For me it is a bittersweet moment. At once, I am really happy to read the final chapter but at the same time I'm sad to know there won't be another story after about the characters I have come to love

I guess, we all feel that way when it comes to a book or series that we like.

So... in all that time, I never left a comment or review. Since the final story is almost finished, I decided it was high-time I did so. And so, I did I sent an email to him with my review and I also invited him to GA because I think his stories will find a home here.

I didn't expect him to respond, but surprise surprise, he did a dew days later He thanked me for the review. As for me... I was OMG!OMG!OMG!!! as I read his email

I plan to write a review for each of his stories on here over the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for them

    Thanks for reading, y'all!!!

Howdy y'all!   These last few weeks have been busy for me, to say the least.

    Without further ado, let's begin!

PHYS 2425: In Week 11, we finished up on waves. My professor went over sound waves, the Doppler Effect, and finally the superposition of waves. In Week 12, we began new material, this time on Temperature. We learned about four different temperature scales: Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin, and Rankine. We then learned how the raising and lowering of temperatures can affect the shape of objects, whether they are solids, liquids, or gases. Speaking of that last phase, my professor also went over the Ideal Gas Law. (And no, @Headstall, it's not how many 'pffts' a day are ideal.  ) Anyways, Week 12 was also Exam Week for Physics. And... it was difficult. The median score for that exam was 58%. Well over half my class failed the third exam. And honestly, I am surprised that I didn't fail this exam, but it's not worth celebrating given how so few actually passed. Next, we have Week 13, this was Thanksgiving Week, so it would be a short one for classes. The College was open as usual on Monday and Tuesday, and closed at noon on Wednesday. So, in Physics, on Monday, we learned about Heat. And that's it for lectures this week. Wednesday morning, instead of the usual lecture, my professor held an Ask Me Anything for his classes. It was not mandatory, so students could choose to attend or not. I attended and it was really interesting. We ended up asking him about black holes, dark energy and dark matter. And, it just shows that is PhD was well deserved.

MATH 2414: Week 11 was basically a review on what we learned since Exam 1, because Exam 2 was coming up. My teacher told us that this exam would be long, so it wouldn't be held during class, but would be taken in the Testing Center, which gives us as much time as we need to finish it. And as it turned out, it took me four hours to finish the second exam. Week 12 is when thing got interesting. We learned about the Indeterminate Form of the Limit, which led us to learning about L'Hopital's Rule. Basically, Indeterminate Forms are limits equal things like 0/0 or infinity over infinity. L'Hopital's rule simply state's that the limit (as x approaches c) of f(x)/g(x) is equal to the the limit (as x approaches c) of f'(x)/g'(x). In short, if you take the derivative of the numerator and of the denominator, you can find the limit that isn't in an indeterminate form. Next, we learned about Improper integrals, and how to use the limit to solve them. Then, in Week 12 things got really interesting. We learned about infinite sequences. And then, Week 13 came along... @Parker Owens Can you guess what we learned next?

These next few weeks are gonna be fun!

ENGR 1201: During Week 11, we prepared for an Exam on Universal Units. (Can y'all see the pattern here?) Then in Week 12, we took the exam and I got an A on it! Finally, on Monday of Week 13, we went to a computer lab to work on a computer program called MATLAB. Apparently it does things better than a graphing calculator so I was intrigued. But... the computers wouldn't work as they were supposed to. So, those plans were scrapped. Instead, she had us work on our design projects.

Question: In regards to Physics, on Exam 1, the median score was 66, on Exam 2 it was 69, and on Exam 3 it was 58. The teacher has the responsibility to teach the material and the student has the responsibility to study that material. The question is, who has greater responsibility, the teacher or the student? Or do they bear equal responsibility. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Finally: I'm now registered for Spring 2019. I'll be taking the following classes:
Principles of Physics II Calculus III Differential Equations Engineering Mechanics I (Statics)
I'm looking forward to next semester!

Howdy y'all! Time for another College Week!

PHYS 2425: This week, my teacher taught us about forces, specifically friction. However, this was also the week that my class had our first exam. And well... I got a C.  To be honest, I'm one of the lucky ones, half my class actually failed it.
MATH 2414: But not everything is doom and gloom. Where last week we learned how to differentiate inverse trigonometric functions, this week, we learned how to integrate them. Again... super fun!  SPCH 1321: In Speech, I gave my second speech, and I got an A on it!
ENGR 1201: In Engineering, we got assigned reading for the weekend. Woohoo.  In all seriousness though, it's only 35 pages, so it ain't a big deal, lol.

Anyways, I have a question for y'all, have you ever done poorly on an exam?
Well, that's it for this week!
  5. Drew Espinosa
HOWDY Y'ALL! Long time, no see!  It's time for another College Week, or two in this case, lol. And guys, I'm more than half way through the semester, wohoo, I've survived so far!

    Well, let's get to it!

PHYS 2425: Last week, we learned about pendulums and oscillations. And I'm surprised at how quickly it clicked with me. Usually it takes me a while to get comfortable with the concepts from my professor's lectures. Anyways, we learned about both simple and physical pendulums, and undamped, damped, and forced oscillations.  This week, we finished up the lectures on oscillations and moved on to waves. This was an incredibly fascinating topic, we learned about the motion of a wave, its energy, how it interacts in different mediums (i.e. water vs. air), and how to create wave equations. Speaking of, when my teacher got to wave equations, he showed us how to use partial differentiation to figure out its speed and acceleration. On that calculus related note...
MATH 2414: Before Break, my teacher introduced partial fractions briefly. Well, after we got back from Break, we dove right in, and I love it! You see, fractions can be difficult to integrate. When a fraction is in the form du/u (where the numerator is the derivative of the denominator) then you can integrate easily, but if it's not then you have to get creative. And that's where partial fractions come in, this method basically splits a difficult fraction into simpler fractions that can be integrated easily. And all I can say is it's a really fun process, although many of you wouldn't understand... you'd have to be a math nerd like me.  So what about this week? Well, we reviewed integration by parts, trig integrals, and partial fractions, because my class will be taking an exam on those topics next week. That reminds me, my teacher finally returned our first exams, and I got an A+!
ENGR 1201: Well, this week, I volunteered to help out at a local Robotics Tournament for kids,  and I'll be one of the judges. I've never judged something like this before, but I know I'll receive a quick orientation before the tournament begins. So, why am I mentioning this here? Well, it was my College's Engineering Club that alerted me to this tournament, and my Engineering teacher okayed it as an assignment for her students. Anyways, I'm looking forward to it!

    That's not all!
Reflections on College Life: I decided to write this after Finals, that way I have the previous four months to look back on.

Civic Duty: In 2013, I turned 18, and therefore became eligible to vote. The first election I could have participated in, was the 2014 Midterm, but I didn't due to general apathy. This time was different, yesterday, I cast my first vote in a Midterm Election!

Okay, that's as far as I'll get into politics in this post.

So, those were my last two weeks. Now, I need to get back to studying.

Howdy y'all! It's time for another College Week, or two.

So, last weekend, I was simply too buried in homework to actually write up a blog post. And while I still have plenty of homework this weekend, it isn't as bad as it was last week.

    So, let's get started!

PHYS 2425: In Physics, last week we learned about Energy, Conservation of Energy, and Simple Machines. This week, we learned about Linear Momentum.
MATH 2414: Last week, my class reviewed what we had learned so far in preparation for Call II's first exam. This week, on Tuesday, we finished up the review. Then came Thursday, the day of the exam... and you know what, I feel like I did well on it.
SPCH 1321: We are in the home stretch of Speech, these past two weeks have simply been going over persuasive speaking and preparing for the final speech.
ENGR 1201: In Engineering, last week we learned how to check if our conversions between units were correct, and this week we began learning about the Derived SI Units (Newtons, Joules, etc.).

Well, that's pretty much it! See you all next week!
  7. Drew Espinosa
Howdy y'all! We are now halfway through the Fall Term. So, without further ado, let's begin!

PHYS 2425: Last week, we learned about Elastic and Inelastic Collisions, and Explosions. Hear that @Page Scrawler? I learned more ways to blow up Michigan.  This week we started learning about Rotational Motion. However this week was mostly devoted to preparing for Exam 2, which reminds me, I didn't really explain how these Physics Exams are graded by my professor.

So to explain, each Exam has 10 problems and you can be awarded 0, 3, 6, 9, or 10 points for each of them, depending on how you answered. For a zero, you did nothing. For a three, you put down an incorrect answer. Getting a six means you got the answer partially correct. With a nine, it's mostly correct. As for a ten, your answer is perfect. So, what happens if you had only partially correct answers on your exam? Congratulations, you just failed the exam.

That seems harsh, but that is the reality of this exam: it's easy to fail. On the last exam, out of 24 students, only two made an A. Why am I bringing this all up? Well, for this exam, I got an 89!!!  That is a freakin' miracle, especially considering I nearly failed the last one.

But enough of that, we need to move on to my other courses, lol.

MATH 2414: @Parker Owens, you'll be pleased to know that last week we learned about Integration by Parts. And my god, it makes even the most difficult integrals easier to solve, that's why I love it. We also began learning about the different methods in tackling trigonometric integrals. It's still a bit confusing on which method to use when we encounter trig integrals in our homework. But, my teacher assured us that we would be going over more examples until we are good at using these methods. Finally, right before break, my teacher briefly touched on Integration using Partial Fractions, but she didn't want to start a new lesson before break (when we are liable to forget about it, lol).

SPCH 1321: Well, last week, I, and the rest of my class, each gave a persuasive speech on donating to a charity of our choosing. Since that was pretty much the final assignment, Speech class was over. Yes, that class has a Final Exam, but it's taken online. Well, I already took the Final, and that class is officially over. Oh, and I guess I should mention I got an A overall in that class.

ENGR 1201: Nothing much has happened, other than working on our Design Projects. I should say however, that my team has faced several difficulties with our project and are behind compared to the other teams. However, we have now largely resolved those issues, and are now working to catch up. Oh, and Thursday evening, I attended my first Engineering Society meeting. It was super fun!

Well, that's it for today! Next week, I'll post about my reflections on the past eight weeks overall, and I'll focus more on the social aspect of college life instead of the academic. So... you may hear about a certain not-a-crush, but no promises!

    Howdy y'all!

Today, I'll be going over my third week at college, so let's begin!

PHYS 2425: This week, my teacher introduced us to forces and Newton's Laws of Motion. I thought I knew them well enough, but boy, I was wrong, really wrong, lol. For our lab, we conducted an experiment to test balancing vectors in two dimensions. Basically, we attached weights to three strings and placed them each on their own pulley that were attached to a force table, then tied the strings to a ring. The goal was to get the ring to remain in the center, because that would mean the strings (or our "vectors") were balanced. This is how it would look like:

MATH 2414: On Tuesday, my teacher taught us how to differentiate logarithmic and exponential functions with bases other than e. Yesterday, we learned how to differentiate inverse trigonometric functions. In short, it was fun!
SPCH 1321: My teacher told the class that we would all be giving a speech next Tuesday, so we spent this week preparing our speeches.
ENGR 1201: So, on the first day of class, way back when  , my teacher told the class that we'd be split into teams and would each work on a design project. We'd have nearly the whole semester to work on them, and then present our project at the end of term. Well, this week, she revealed the design projects!

Oh and I guess I should talk about this:
Gym? So, Wednesday, a friend dragged me to the college gym, because she wanted to check it out. Well, we signed up for a free membership (since we're students) and we went on a tour. If y'all haven't figured this out yet, me and exercise don't mix. So, I don't think I'll actually go to the gym often, if at all. But, who knows, maybe I'll surprise myself.

    Anyways that was my week!
  9. Drew Espinosa
    Howdy y'all!

Today, I'll be giving y'all a brief summary of my first two weeks at college. But, before we begin, I'll give a quick introduction and explain a few things.

First, the actual titles of my courses are long, so instead, I'll be referring to them by their Subject and Course Number. So, with that in mind:
Principles of Physics I is PHYS 2425 Calculus II is MATH 2414 Business and Professional Speaking is SPCH 1321 Introduction to Engineering is ENGR 1201 Next, classes at Amarillo College either last eight weeks or sixteen weeks. For eight week courses, they either begin in late August along with the sixteen week classes, or they begin in late October. Both types cover the same amount of material. To do this, an eight week class is held each day from Monday to Thursday, while a sixteen week class has classes either on Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays.

    All right, let's begin.

PHYS 2425: During the first week, my professor went over the kinematic equations for 1-D motion. In the second week, he covered 2-D motion and vector calculations. Oh and he divided the class into several groups to conduct an experiment on 1-D motion (we do labs on the prior week's topic).
MATH 2414: In the first week, my professor reviewed Algebra, Trigonometric, and Calculus I topics, to make sure her students were up to speed before we got into Calc II. This past week, we learned about the rules for differentiating and integrating natural logarithms..
SPCH 1321: This is my only eight week class. In the first week, my teacher discussed the basics of public speaking, vocal delivery, and nonverbal delivery. In the second week, he went over ho to structure the introduction, body, and conclusion of a speech.
ENGR 1201: My professor lectured on the different types of engineers there are (such as civil, mechanical, nuclear) during the first week. Finally, this past week, she lectured about ethics in engineering.

Oh and before I forget, yes, all these classes has led to a lot of note-taking on my part, and a ton of homework!

Anyways, that pretty much wraps it up. If any of you have any questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them.
  10. Drew Espinosa
    I'm still on cloud 9!

So, earlier this afternoon, I went to cast my vote for the 2016 Election.

For President: From the get-go, I would not be voting for either Trump or Clinton. Trump is a buffoon and too unpredictable and volatile (especially when it comes to international matters) to be our president. Clinton, she has so much baggage with an array of scandals (real or imagined) and she is too much of a warhawk for my liking. In the end, I voted for Jill Stein, because she shares many of the same views as Sanders- who I supported during the Democratic Primary. Yes, I know she'll most likely not be our next president and no, I don't think I wasted my voted. All votes count, whether that vote went to join the tens of millions of its brethren to a major candidate or the tens of thousands for a minor one.

For US Representative: I live in the 13th Congressional District of Texas. It is one of the most Republican districts in the country. In fact, it's so Republican that there isn't usually a Democrat on the Ballot. I ultimately decided to cast my vote for my current congressman. I asked myself a simple question: has he done a good job representing my district. And for me, yes he has. So, I saw no issue in reelecting him. (FYI- my congressman has literally represented me my entire life- he was first elected in 1994 and I was born in 1995 )

For State-Wide offices: In this election, other than my state representative and the Railroad Commissioner, several seats on the Texas Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals were open to this election. For the judges, I chose a few Republicans, a few Democrats, and a libertarian.

It must show my independent nature to choose Democrats, Greens, Libertarians, and Republicans.

I honestly don't have much else to say other than: It was a pretty amazing experience and it was such an amazing feeling to know I helped make a difference for my state and my country.
  11. Drew Espinosa
Before I begin, I just want to let you all know I'm trying to keep this blog happy and positive, despite the turmoil I'm experience today.

In the summer of 2007, my family at the time had only one pet, a cat, named Shata. While she was mostly an indoors kitty, she did like to go outside every now and then. And since our neighborhood had other cats roaming the street, it wasn’t a surprise when we found out one day that she was pregnant.
Funnily enough, just the year before, my eldest sister had her first child, so I had some experience around pregnancy… but as it turned out, not enough.   You see, when I found out that Shata was pregnant, I turned to my mom, and asked, “Will we have to wait 9 months for the kittens to be born?” Yes, I know, I was a pretty naïve kid back then.   Anyways, after laughing a bit, my mom reassured me that the kittens will be here in a matter of weeks. And so, I eagerly awaited the day of the kittens’ birth.
Finally, on 19 July 2007, Shata gave birth. When I first looked at them, these tiny and blind bundles of fur, I knew I was a goner. I told my mom that I was excited to raise all of the kittens, but, my mom had to dampen my spirits. She told me we wouldn’t be able to afford raising them all- we’d have to give most of them away.
My family ended up keeping one, a white-furred male, and due to his coloring, my mother named him Guero- a Spanish word associated with the color white.
And so, my family had two kitties, Guero and his mother. But… one day, Shata went outside and… she never came back. We were devastated, my mother even more so, because Shata was her little princess. This event changed my family, from that day forth, we’d raise Guero (and all future kitties) as a housecat. That way, we’d never have to deal with the uncertainty that would come if they were to disappear.
Guero was, and continued to be, somewhat shy and timid. He’d hide away somewhere if he encountered someone new, and it would take him a while for him to warm up to a stranger. But, when he did warm up to someone, he or she better watch out!   He’d come to you for pets and strokes, and he’d purr and shower you with affection as you do.
And, he knew he could give you a look or a meow to get what he’d want. (He had me wrapped around his little paw... lol) Case in point, when I had to study or work on an assignment late into the night, Guero would be outside my door, clawing at it while he gave the most pitiful meow imaginable- wanting to get in. I’d do my best to ignore him, and focus on my schoolwork. But, I would cave, and open the door, and Guero would rush into my bedroom, and rub up against my leg, and purr.  Of course, I’d have to divide my time between studying and petting Guero, although he would have preferred if most of my time (if not all) was used to pet him, lol.

-The above is what I wrote before Guero died, and right now, I don't know how to complete this today, or for that matter, if I ever will be able to. I'll just end it here and say, Guero will always have a place in my heart.

There is no easy way to say this, but these last few days have been trying and absolutely overwhelming.

I, tried my best, to stay afloat, and go about my business as usual- like hanging out with my friends on GA and joking around with them. But, my god, it felt hollow this week.  There is a hole in my heart right now, and everything has simply gotten too much for me to handle.

GA no longer felt like my home away from home, so, I faced a grim choice concerning my future on this site; should I leave GA or should I stay?

In the end, I've decided to stay. But... I was sorely tempted to wash my hands of this mess and walk away. But the cons outweighed the pros; if I had left, it would mean leaving my friends, friends that for all intents and purposes are my family. And I couldn't bear the thought of doing so.

However, staying doesn't unbreak my heart. And so, there will be changes on my part- for the foreseeable future, I am keeping my presence in the Forums to a minimum, and will focus on the thing that originally brought me here- reading great stories.

Just remember, I love each and every one of you.  And, I promise not to disappear entirely on you all.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire E 15, and I bought it in November 2014. At the time, it had Windows 8.1, which was my first encounter with anything Windows 8 related, so it took me a while to adjust to the OS.

I originally bought it for school, it would be my means of writing assignments and researching for my courses. But it didn't take long for it to also be a laptop for leisure-listening to music, watching YouTube videos, or reading GA stories. So it isn't much of a surprise to say I heavily relied on my laptop...

...but of course, that reliability came to a crashing halt in March 2015. One day, I turned on my laptop, expecting it to load the screen where I'd sign in. It didn't. It was stuck on a black screen with the Acer logo. Nothing I did fixed it, I called my brother in law- who's a computer whiz- he couldn't fix it. We called tech support, and they were no help, other than saying we should send the laptop back to the manufacturer for repairs. So that's what I did; at least this happened when the warranty was still in effect, so all I had to pay was the shipping.

In the meantime, I used the college library to work on assignments- which were saved on my student account, so I didn't have to worry about them.

Two weeks later... My laptop was fixed! And better still, my files were intact!

And I experienced no problems, until, that is, Autumn of 2016. I turn on my laptop, and it's stuck on the logo screen... Sound familiar? Well, I turned it off, and I'd deal with it later that day. Well, twelve hours later, I decided to turn on my laptop again, and it was working again. You don't know how relieved I was. However to this day, I still don't know why it didn't respond the first time that day.

And now... Yesterday. It was the afternoon and I was writing my anthology while listening to music online, but my laptop lost connection to the WiFi. No big deal, I simply saved my anthology, closed my apps, and restarted my laptop so when it turned on again, it would connect. Less then thirty minutes later, I lost connection again. I restarted. Less then thirty minutes later, it lost connection again. I restarted, and this is where sh*t hit the fan. This time, my laptop, seeing I've restarted a few times decides to perform a diagnostics. A few minutes later, it tells me my laptop didn't restart correctly, and gives my the choice to restart my laptop again or click advanced options. I chose the former, hoping that a fresh restart would fix it. Nope! So I went to advanced options, and I choose one of them. Did it work? No, it did not. A message popped up saying it couldn't complete the task successfully, and this is where my hearted stopped beating for a second: it told me I may have a corrupted disk.

So yeah, that was my day yesterday.

I've had this laptop for almost three years and it has pulled this crap three times. Is it worth it getting it repaired only for it to crash again? Should I was my hands of this laptop and buy a new one?

**I'm using my tablet, so if you see any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, its my dang autocorrect.**

I'm gonna tell you an interesting fact about my family.

On 11 February 1987, my eldest sister was born. On 12 February 1997, my little brother was born.

So this means, that for two days in a row, my family gets to eat a lot of cake! And what makes this year more fun (aside from my sister turning thirty and my brother twenty), is that it's on the weekend!

I wonder how much weight I'll gain by the end of the weekend? lol.

PS: Heeding Krista's advice, I didn't tease my sister. That's why I'll show her this:

Okay, so I just started watching this documentary series by VICE called Gaycation. It follows Ellen Page and her friend as they travel around the world exploring different countries LGBT culture.

It only has four episodes so far (Japan, Brazil, Jamaica, and the USA). I watched the Japan episode, and my goodness, I found it really interesting Ellen explored the LGBT club scene in Tokyo, the fujoshi culture (female fans of yaoi), the general attitude towards homosexuality, daily life for a gay men and women, and so on.

I really enjoyed it, because I am only familiar with our own LGBT culture here in the US. So it was fun being able to see how things are both similar and different in Japan.

If y'all are interested, here's the trailer:

Now, I'm off to watch the Brazil episode! (and I may or may not be excited to see some Brazilian men )

It has been so long since I wrote an actual story, that I think it’s time that I wrote were exactly I am with it. To be honest, this was inspired by four people: Comicality, craftingmom, Parker Owens, and northie.

Yesterday, Comsie posted a topic about the harassment he experienced due to leaving some of his stories unattended to. And it got me thinking of my own stories. While I certainly never experienced any harassment over any of my stories, it made me examine how long it takes for me to post a story or a poem. The last time I added a chapter was back in June of this year, a poem. The last story, was an anthology piece posted back in December of 2015, and my first story hasn’t been updated in well over a year.

Yesterday, I also saw that blog entry by craftingmom, detailing where she was at with Falling Apart coming to a close and gave us details into her future writing projects. So I figured, maybe I ought to do something similar. So, here we are!

Poetry- Last year, I took the plunge and began perusing through AC’s poetry prompts. And I tried my hand at doing some of the prompts. However, I haven’t posted a poem in months, and it’s been far longer since I directly responded to a poetry prompt. And it was simply due to other things taking precedence. What I plan on doing is getting back into writing poetry. I even have an outline for a response to AC’s Elegy prompt that I never got around to. I also plan on getting back into haikus and tankas, they have a special place in my heart, and autumn is just the perfect time to begin writing them once more. From there… just working on each of AC’s prompts with maybe an unprompted poem here and there.

The Day and Night Sequel- So… last year, I wrote a story for the 2015 Winter Anthology. It was well-received and many asked about a sequel. I promised to get it out for the 2016 Spring Anthology, but I wasn’t able to do so. A major reason had to deal with making the story fit the theme without making the theme too obvious within the sequel. Well, as it turned out, that was too tall an order for me. And it simply wasn’t working for me. So I shelved it for the meantime, hoping that the next themes would make all the difference. But again, the themes didn’t speak to me for the sequel, even though I was hoping this Fall’s Anthology would do the trick, only to be disappointed again.

At this point, I think I should simply write the story without the guidance of an anthology theme. And when I’m done writing it, and it has gone through editing, I’ll post it

The First Story- So, for many who have read my stories and poems, the future of In Four Years is probably the biggest question mark. Believe me, you’re not alone, I’m right there with you.

It… freaked me out. I poured so much of myself when I was a freshman, that it was a trippy and crazy experience to see how much of myself was in the protagonist. And it begged the question: How much do I want this story to be based on my life experiences? And quite frankly, I didn’t know how to answer. Hell, I still don’t know.

However, the main issue revolves around a simple question: to edit or not to edit? The answer seems simple enough; the first (and only) chapter has issues that must be edited. But, how? See, I am so conflicted about this, on the one hand I do want to edit and revamp the chapter, but on the other… I'm sentimental about a lot of things, and this is no different. I want to keep the chapter unchanged (faults and all) so I can remind myself how far I have come. I have thought about unpublishing the story, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I’m just unsure what would happen to all the reviews given for my first attempt at writing a story. If they had disappeared, it would’ve pained me deeply.

For so long, this story has remained in limbo. And as I’m writing this, I am still conflicted about In Four Years, so for the time being it will have to remain in limbo. But hopefully, I will be able to one day come back to this first story.

Future Projects- This is where I give my deepest gratitude to two wonderful friends: Parker Owens and northie. For it was those two that helped reignite my muse. This month, we’ve been writing scenes and weaving them together in a tapestry of a story. It has been such an awesome experience that my seemingly dormant muse finally decided to wake up. Now, I’m sure many of you are thinking, Will you three post this story? Well… my lips are sealed on that one.

So, what has my muse been up to since it woke up? Well, I saw this Halloween picture online and thought, this would be an interesting premise for a short story! So, right now, I am in the process of writing that Halloween story, and hopefully I can have it ready to post on Halloween. And what is so cool, is that it’ll be using characters that had been quietly in my head for a while now. And I can assure you, that this Halloween short story will not be their only appearance. Because their actual story will be a multi-chapter novella, which I am in the process of outlining. Plus, I have two other story ideas that I am considering writing, one is a short story that centers around the 2016 Election. And I am sure that these will not be the last story ideas I have.

In Conclusion- I have a lot on my plate, besides getting back to stories like Day and Night and starting new ones, I also need to get back to reviewing, which I have sadly been neglecting to do for months So, a lot of these things will take time, but I’ll be sure to get to my old and new stories as soon as possible.

And despite of the uncertainties that remain with In Four Years and Day and Night, I feel pretty confident and optimistic about the months to come.

    Love y'all!
    -Drew

PS: I hope that when I was discussing the sequel, I didn't come across as dissing the anthology themes. Because they were awesome, it's just they and the sequel never really clicked.

    Hey everyone!

So, Wednesday morning, I woke up with an annoying ache in one of my teeth. At first, I was able to ignore it since it was more a nuisance than an actual pain, but the ache began to intensify later that afternoon and really got bad at night (to the point where I wasn't able to sleep ). Well, Thursday morning saw me at the dentist's office to make an emergency appointment, and thankfully they had a slot opened for 11:30 AM, which meant I didn't have to wait that for long.

The dentist quickly found what the problem was: my right mandibular first molar was infected. He told me that I would either have to have a root canal or a dental extraction . However neither of those options could happen until my infection went away, so he wrote two prescriptions for an antibiotic (Penicillin) and a painkiller (Tylenol) for me to take in the meantime.

After considering the costs for each procedure, I decided for the extraction since it was more affordable. Before I left the office, I set up an appointment for the extraction next Wednesday, and then I went to the pharmacy to get my prescriptions.

So what happened afterwards? Well, when I got back home, I took the Penicillin and the Tylenol and when the ache abated, I finally got some much needed rest.

As for today, the ache isn't anywhere near as bad as it was Wednesday night. All in all, I'm doing well.

Today is MLK Jr. Day, so my Spring Term won't start until tomorrow. I just want to outline what my time will be like at school.

Well, I'm not taking that many classes, just 13 credit hours in total. Plus, they are spread over the week: on Monday/Wednesday my classes begin and 8:30 AM and on Tuesday/Thursday at 9:55 AM. And they end at 12:35 PM each day. What about Friday? Well... my college doesn't hold classes that day, so... three day weekend! Of course, these classes I am taking are fairly heavy duty so a lot of my free time will probably be spent studying, especially around midterms and finals.

In any case, I should still find time to be on GA spreading my angelic goodness everywhere.

On a more serious note, this is a weird time for me. I'm in the process of changing my major. To what? I have no idea yet. Nothing really calls out to me, but as y'all know my love for math will be influencing what I decide to choose. A part of me wants to be an engineer, but I'm stuck on what type of engineer I want to be. Another part wants to become an architect, but the rest of me has no clue what I want to do career wise. Sadly, whichever career I ultimately pursue, I ain't exactly confident I'd be good at it.

Goodness, did any of you ever have any of these uncertainties when you were in school? I'd appreciate any advice y'all can give me

I was around 5 years old when I began to wear glasses, and I wasn't the lest bit happy about it Even at such a young age, I thought I looked like a dweeb

The only bright spot, at the time, was during the first grade (ages 6 to 7). At the time I wore these round glasses that, according to my classmates, made me look like Harry Potter

Well, I got used to them eventually, and soon enough I wasn't even thinking much about them.

Now, I must insert a bit of context Erm... I ain't a fashionista, I have zero fashion sense (at least by the standards of the gay stereotype ) ao, growing up, I never really cared how I looked or dressed.

Well, by the time I reached high school, I had figured out what I liked to wear (mind you I didn't dress to look "cool" whatever that is ). But, at that point in time, my glasses didn't matter too much... until, I decided to make my own form of a "fashion statement" with them (and yes that is the "gayest" you'll see me ) so, since Freshman year, I began to wear glasses that I liked based on style and not just utility

Well, that tradition has continued with my new pair I really like them ...and I may even post a pic today!

PS: Yes, I mean may, I ain't brave enough to post a pic of myself (without effects ) so y'all might have to settle for a pic of the glasses themselves

As some of you know, my sister found an abandoned kitten a couple of days ago So I am going to give a quick update.

The night we found him, he didn't sleep well and he fidgeted a lot. By morning we found out why: the poor dear had fleas. Well we gave him a bath, and we managed to get rid of most of the fleas during that. However, some still clung on and so for the next hour or so we watched him to take the remaining fleas one by one as they too died.

    So, now he is flea-free

Now, in other news, we found out these past couple of days that we had to hold him a certain way to actually feed him, else he wouldn't hold onto the bottle's nipple. Oh! and what is absolutely precious is that my sister is acting as the primary caregiver so she holds him with her wherever she goes, in fact she made a sort of pouch to hold the kitten

Okay, I can't resist, I have to say it: he is just so CUTE!!! and I plan on posting a pic sometime tomorrow

So yeah, that is my news!

PS: If y'all are wondering why I call the kitten "him" it is because we still haven't decided a name for him

I'll probably forget to post this tomorrow morning so, I'll go ahead and post this now

Tomorrow will be an interesting day for the UK and the Commonwealth realms, because on 9 September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will become the longest reigning monarch in British history.

    So, Congratulations Queen Elizabeth II!

On this day, June 29, 2015, I celebrate one year as a member of GA.

To mark this day, I want to take a look at how I became a member, reflect on my first year, and take a guess at my future here.

Becoming a Member: One day in early June, I was perusing through Nifty's SF-Fantasy section and I came across a story called Your Alpha, My Mate. It was just one chapter at the time, and I read it and I was hooked. Of course, the author added a note that she would add on soon. Well, I couldn't wait soon. So I went to her personal site and YAY!!! I found more chapters! I might have went on a reading splurge. Anyway, when I was done I noticed Wolfwriter had links on her page, and for some reason the one called Gay Authors caught my eye, and so I clicked on it.... dun! Dun! DUN!!! LOL

Anyways, I came to a familiar site. It turns out that I did visit this site sometime in March. That first visit didn't really leave a lasting impression. But the second one sure did. As an avid reader I only cared about reading the stories this new place "GA" had. Anything else was not even important. So I mainly stayed on the Stories or Authors Tabs. Anything else, like Forums, did not matter all that much. Back to the stories, I rapidly expanded from Wolfwriter's stories to others. Those stories made me realize that GA was a serious place when it came to marvelous stories. So it became a new addiction for me. This leads me to how I joined. In those first few weeks lurking about as a guest, this Help box followed me around everywhere, and I just had enough. I wanted to get rid of it, so, I on June 29, 2014, I joined GA as a member! Yay! the Help box was gone! It wasn't some special way or a noteworthy reason to join, but that is how I joined GA.

My First Year: Well, as a member, I continued with reading. I also continued with ignoring the wider GA Community. This is where I need to explain: Guys, I am really shy. I knew what the Forums, Chat, and more entailed: I would actually have to get out of my comfort level and socialize. The horror! So I just stuck with the stories. As a member, I was given privileges, I could review chapters, I could "like" chapters and stories, and so much more besides. I didn't use them Again, it comes back to being shy. I couldn't face putting myself out there. So what I want to focus on at the moment, are the Reviews. I didn't think what I had to say mattered. So what, if I left a review "Great Story" or "I love [this] because___" Many other reviewers have said the same things. Would the author even care for what I thought? My answer: why would they?

Well, that became depressing! On a brighter note, in my first year, I read many fantastic stories, I devoured things like Timber Pack Chronicles, A Rescued Life, Let the Music Play, and so much more besides. So, nothing really changed, other than reading more and more. That is until a fateful day in January. On that day, I received a message. Someone had added me as their friend. But but but, I am a recluse how did this happen? To top it off, my new friend was an author, Sacredlove. I just about had a meltdown. I am a huge fan of his. It was like getting a personal letter from JK Rowling (I should add, that to this day, I have to restrain myself from asking for an autograph from any author on here, because, I see all of you as I would Rowling or Stephen King) This was actually the catalyst to opening up

It wasn't until the start of April, that things began to change quickly. I bit the bullet, and wrote my first review to a new chapter of Sacredlove's story. Also, on April 8, I celebrated my 20 Birthday Sacred, responded to both. With the former, he thanked me for my review On the latter, he wished me a Happy Birthday!!! Add to this, the fact that I was taking a Western Civilization course at the college. This was my first discussion based class, it was so different and refreshing from the usual lectures, I also realized that if I could discuss with my peers on topics like the Reformation, I sure as heck could open up here on GA. So, with that said, I began visiting the Forums. So, I need to tell my first experience: It was in the Lounge that I came across a thread called "Spiders" and I felt a sense of foreboding, because I am arachnophobic. But, I previewed the topic and... the first post was by a member named Zombie. It was the lullaby to itsy bitsy spider! My first thought was, Is this man, Zombie, in the loony bin? LOL So, my curiosity was piqued and I clicked on it.... Worst. Mistake. Ever.

From that moment on, I really just opened up. I rapidly made friends, heck I made family. I love you all! Gosh I am actually crying, typing all of this! Happy Tears! Here I am on June 29, 2015, celebrating my First Anniversary, and *raises imaginary glass** here's to many more to come!

The Future: I will continue meeting new friends. I will write down things as often as I can, and just having a blast being a GA Member!

*I really need to review the stories I have read...
**I have a confession: Drew Espinosa isn't my "actual" name. Drew is a shortened form of Andrew, and that is what I am known by back home. Espinosa is my mother's maiden name. Please guys, continue to call me Drew, I actually like being called so
***Boy, I used a lot of emojis, sorry for the clutter.

    Thanks everyone!

God, I hate that I am going to talk about politics so soon. But today calls for it.

Today, I saw something that shocked, hurt, and pained me. So, I left a long comment on it. I have no idea if it will be posted... so I am posting a similar piece on here.

I am a young man that champions the "Freedom of Speech" and I live by Voltaire's "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." but what I saw really tested my resolve. I do not merely disagree with what I saw, I absolutely disagree with it and I cannot, nay will not, defend it. It pains me to write that. To not defend a person's right to say something is anathema to me. Having to think that is so disheartening.

I was offended by what I saw. Now, if I had seen something like this two months ago, I would have thought it was meant out of a certain brand of humor. I understand, that their are humorists, satirists, and comedians that say and do offensive things for the sake of humor and comedy, But what I saw, along with previous things by the same person, I can therefore say it was offensive for the sake of being offensive.

I try to look at the good in everyone, no matter their faults, but this post just pushed me beyond my limit.

It grieves me, that I don't have the will to defend it, but... **sigh** I wash my hands of it.
