  1. Part Five Annie came into my office just before closing and laid another holo tab on my desk. "You don't have to even look at that until Monday, okay?" I nodded absently, smiling at the text floating in the display atop my desk. "You mean it's not important?" She shrugged. "It's from Warren, at Tel-Canter. He said it was important, but I know better. I told him you had already gone home for the day." She leaned forward and patted my shoulder. "Don't make a liar out of me, okay? Go ho
  2. Thank you for your comment. If not for readers, I'd probably be in the kitchen right now, peeling potatoes.

    Part 4

The problem with time in a short story is that you can't dwell on any one period for too long. If I had made a proper novel of this, it would have been better. But it was just a picture challenge story on another site, and so I was limited in how much time I had to write it. I was not crazy about living in NYC. I was happy to return to my woods, and here I have stayed.
  4. Part Four "Bet it won't even start," Clint said, kicking the front tire of the big Dodge Ram pick up. The owner, who had introduced himself as Larry, laughed. "It's dirty as hell, but what do you expect from a real off-road vehicle? Flowers in the ashtrays?" Benny wrinkled his nose, which made the fine, newborn mustache beneath it twitch. I grinned, knowing what he was thinking. "You don't smoke in this truck, do you?" I asked, for Benny. "That leaves a real funk behind that's

My dog's agent is an Ewok! He's from the Zurk <squeak> murba tribe. They're cannibals! And not very bright, either. The perfect agent!

    Part 3

I have no trouble believing that you used to get yourself in trouble...because you still do!

    Part 2

My dog would eat an Ewok. AND his agent!

    Part 2

    What? Will someone tell me??!

    Part 2

My dog is smarter than an Ewok. His agent told him so!

    Part 3

Son, your precocious nature will someday get you into trouble!

    Part 3

    Too close to home, literally.

    Part 1

I do own one, yes. The mount is what makes it great for easily finding objects in the sky. If your friend worked on the GPS software, tell him thanks!

    Part 2

I like Larry Niven, when he's good. That's mostly his older stuff. But Ringworld is definitely a gem. I just felt that the best science fiction might be too obscure for the average reader here for me to go that route in the story. People that don't read sci-fi don't know the details. Many people here would have just blinked in confusion had I mentioned a Pierson's Puppeteer or a Kzin. But even my dog knows what an Ewok is.

Well, every trip can't be an expensive one to the stars. Sometimes, you just have to let commonsense rule your wallet!

    Part 2

There we agree. Whoever said that 'love can move mountains' obviously understood both very well.

    Part 2

Agreed. But Griff's exposure to science fiction had to begin somewhere, and most kids have heard of Star Wars. I only wanted to touch on the sci-fi angle, not dwell on it, so I stayed with something familiar to just about every reader. For some reason, people remember those goofy teddybears, while some of the more interesting Star Wars aliens draw a blank. I'd have used Wookies, which I like much better, if I had really considered it.

    That would be telling...and spoiling!
  20. Part Three Gary Spain was gay, and a lonely gay at that. He had resumed visiting with Jerry Creed in our row of lockers, and he was both civil and quite companionable at all times. I got so I liked him, at first a little, and then a lot. He had issues, but who doesn't? The main thing was that he tried to work around them, even if he didn't always make it without a stumble. Benny and I started to invite him over after school. He came eagerly, his desire to spend more time with guys that

    Part 1

Sigh. This story is done. But I made a note to 'find cute, red-headed young grandfather for DQ in future story'. Happy?
  22. Part Two I taught Benny how to use my 'scope, and we became a team on dark nights, observing the skies above the small patch of planet we shared together. The great thing about skywatching is that you can live just east of total obscurity, and still have a magnificent view of the sky. We scanned the neighboring moon, the craters and mountain ranges seeming incredibly close to our eyes under the powerful lenses of the telescope. It's easy to take the moon for granted when it just hangs in the

    Part 1

Haha. I can write in a grandfather, but by that point, would he still be red-haired?

Well, thank you for the kind words. I hope this tale will be likable to you, too.
