    Chapter 5

Thanks! I'm working on my cliffhanger skills.

    Chapter 5

One of my favorite quotations about thick-headedness concerned Philip II of Spain: "No failure of his policies could dissuade him from his belief in their essential excellence." That's the very definition of folly, which turns out to be quite different from stupidity.

    Chapter 8

I do intend to have some fun with the kids' first reactions to the modern world in general and to the lefty subculture in particular. You know how those lefty ghettos are in the big cities - exciting, of course, but also a bit... sordid. Yes, rumspringa is a very apt comparison.
  4. Refugium

    Chapter 8

Events will be unfolding in both Califoregon and Utizona, I promise.
  5. Refugium

    Chapter 8

Yes, there are many discoveries and changes coming. Now that our heroes have escaped, I get to slip in some bits that are lighter in tone.

    Chapter 8

Upstairs at the church, Mr. Norton handed paperwork to the four new arrivals seated around the table in a room that was furnished as a lounge. A small kitchen occupied one wall. “We’ve managed to streamline the process of getting kids accepted into the foster care system. You’ll be meeting with someone from a State agency soon. We can guide you through that meeting. You’ll probably end up in a foster family, although the church is registered as a congregate care facility and you could actually

    Chapter 7

Oh, you people from countries with affordable universal healthcare think it's so easy to pick up and move. (Did I just cross the line into political commentary?)
  8. Refugium

    Chapter 7

With Sam and the others exposed to the world outside Hillcrest, we will finally get to see something of the broader political landscape. And of course the drama of Hillcrest is not over.
  9. Refugium

    Chapter 7

Choosing the name Harry Tubman was pretty silly, but I couldn't resist. Farrow's reckoning is coming. And we'll see how Sam and the gang adapt to life in a very different town.
  10. Refugium

    Chapter 7

I'm not sure if Sam's parents are finally going to leave as well or not. I think they need a little more time to get used to the changes that are coming so rapidly. But for Sam, it's better not to wait. As long as there's no rancor, maybe they can all think of it as Sam taking a couple of years to study abroad. And maybe later Sam can tell his parents about PFLAP (Parents and Friends of Left-handed and Ambidextrous People).

    Chapter 7

"I can't believe the sheriff is dropping the whole thing." Sam's mother paced in the living room, shaking her head. "Saying it's no different from a schoolyard fight. That coward. He's caving in to pressure from Farrow." Sam's father sat in a chair by the window, looking out at the black van parked in front. One or another of Farrow's minions had been posted outside the Swift home ever since the chaotic meeting at the church. For almost a week, Sam had stayed home except for his medical appoint

    Chapter 6

He could turn out to be left-handed. But I do like the idea of something bizarre. Now you've inspired me; the ideas I've been mulling seem too mundane. I hate to drag the bighorn sheep into this, but if I must...

    Chapter 6

Maybe Sam's mother will be the one to start a rebellion!

    Chapter 6

Jesse Davis stayed at the wheel after bringing the pickup truck to a sudden stop. The other three poured out: Toby, Gabe with baseball bat in hand, and another boy of their crowd, Paul Cox. Sam and Glen stood back to back. Naomi tried to run. Paul caught her by the arm and threw her toward the truck. Gabe came for Sam. "You've got some nerve coming anywhere near Rachel. Stay away from her!" He swung. Sam ducked and tried to block the blow with his arms. The bat hit his right wrist with a crack

    Chapter 5

It's not going to be rainbows and lollipops, no. Stay tuned!
  16. Very nice. A good balance of history and smut. And you tantalize us yet again.
  17. Refugium

    Chapter 5

So far the grown-ups are caricatures. Some are about to become more complex.

    Chapter 5

"What's going on in here?" Mr. Inram came in and headed straight for the radio. Faint music started to come from it. Ruth stepped forward. "Just an experiment." Glen reached for the dials on the radio. Mr. Inram stopped him. "Don't touch that. Leave the dial right where it is. You kids know that radios aren't allowed. You want to experiment with electricity, you experiment with something else." Glen tried to improvise. "This is just an old piece of equipment my grandfather had. I don't even r

    Chapter 4

I couldn't resist having the gay couple call Sam a pervert. I've read that during the late 19th century migrations to the American West, Jews would occasionally pass through Salt Lake City, where they would be amused to find the Mormons referring to them as "Gentiles." Not quite the same issue, but that's what inspired this particular bit of silliness.

    Chapter 4

Well, we shall see. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it." --Upton Sinclair

    Chapter 4

I just hope Mercury isn't in retrograde.

    Chapter 4

The back roads were empty as Sam rode his bike home. After the urgency of changing classes, it felt like his first chance to digest the huge amount of new information poured into his brain Monday afternoon. What would it mean to escape? Does it mean never seeing my family again? Am I ready for that? I'm only fourteen. If I make it to Califoregon, would anyone give me work, a place to live? What are these "sanctuary churches," what do they offer, what if that doesn't work out? What if Pa and Ma c

    Chapter 3

Yes, escape is a big decision. I'm working on getting Sam to wrap his mind around it.
  24. Refugium

    Chapter 2

Thanks! I thought it would be fun to write a Twilight-Zone-ish allegory on the absurdity of prejudice.
  25. Refugium

    Chapter 3

We have several chapters to go before things get better, but they will, and the tone will get considerably lighter. At least Sam's not in Texlahoma!
