    Chapter 3

As minors, these kids' main concern would be that their parents or other "responsible" adults could drag them back.

    Chapter 3

Sam was stunned. Naomi, Ruth and Noah were looking at him. “Where is Adam now? Where’s he talking from?” Ruth put down her chalk and walked over to Sam. “He’s over the state line, in Califoregon. It’s not like here in Utizona. Lefties are legal there. It’s even illegal to discriminate there. And it’s only fifty miles away.” Naomi leaned back in her chair. “There are places we can go. There are sanctuary churches. They welcome left-handers and help them get a new start.” “We’re making a plan,”

    I agree!

    Chapter 2

As Laurie Anderson said, "Oh boy. Right again." Thanks for reading!

    Chapter 2

Coming up Thursday, if all goes well.

    Chapter 1

    It is!

    Chapter 2

Sam left for school early enough to bike through the back roads. There were far fewer people and the scenery was better. The quinoa fields had a ramshackle charm that Sam especially liked. Hillcrest's recent prosperity was largely due to quinoa, a new variety suited to its climate and a lower altitude than the South American strains. Sam smiled at the thought of how the urban foodies who were making Hillcrest farmers comfortable were exactly the sort of people for whom the church professed disap
  8. And another disappointing thing - real plumbers are never like the plumbers in the porn movies!
  9. Horrifying. This chapter packs quite an emotional punch. In my opinion, that's a very good thing. May all your writing have such power.

    Chapter 1

Unfortunately, it's going to get worse for Sam before it gets better.
  11. Refugium

    Chapter 1

This is an "alternate reality" story, so expect some surprises in the world outside Hillcrest.

    Chapter 1

“‘When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: and before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats.’” The pastor thundered on. Sam sat with his father and mother and sisters on one of the hard wooden pews in the unadorned church. It was usually during the sermon that he noticed how uncomfortable the pews were. It wasn’t as if

    Sinister

Sam's family lives in an isolated religious community, and Sam has a secret he can't tell them.
  14. The dreams are vivid and appropriately disturbing to read. Well done. Are you sure you want "calvary" and not "cavalry?" "At this point I always wake, and big black Jerome and little white William, my brothers, are not dying beside me, even though I can still smell their blood, even though I can still see them lying there. You see, these two, they've been taking turns dying on me, again and again and again for all these long years. And still people tell me, 'Forget Nam.'" --David Connolly, from the film "Voices in Wartime"
  15. Oh, Monsieur Rex, you are such a tease. What could Clayton's secret be? He's scheduled to leave in two years to live in the first human colony on Mars? He's married to a madwoman who is locked in a tower? He's a Walton heir? His mad wife is a Walton heir? He's one of the Illuminati? The details of Ryan's preparation for prosthetics are fascinating, and the roller coaster of hope and frustration convincingly portrayed.
  16. Thank you, Puppilull. I think the admirable thing about Rudolf is that he lets himself be pulled out of his isolation and back into life, even though the romantic impulse doesn't pan out. What he does get is a different, quieter kind of magic, which is no small thing.
  17. Thanks! I couldn't quite figure out how to reconcile the unique card with the situation I set up. Perhaps I could have set up some alternate compelling reason why Rudolf goes searching - irritation? Part of the inspiration was the organization Let's Kick ASS and the film "Last Men Standing," of which I have only seen the trailer and read the print version. I've looked at the "Last Leaf" prompt, and am still waiting for an approach to bob to the surface.

    Chapter 7

Thank you, Puppilull! I'm glad you enjoyed the series. You're quite right -- the last chapter shows signs of my impatience to finish the story. I'm grateful to get your impression as a reader and your perspective as a writer.

    A Matter of Taste

"Brew Radley's" is hysterical! That is your own take-off on "Boo Radley's," right? From the Chief's comment, it seems that Logan is in the habit of leaving personal items at the residences of people he's met. Maybe only the ones he wants to hear from again. A not-so-subtle way of saying "Call me." The over-the-top horrors of the twins' apartment were very fun. Very engaging, swift-moving chapter. I look forward to more.
  20. The music wasn't to his taste and the crowd was too loud for him as Rudolf Steiner finished his early dinner at his usual restaurant. The staff had changed over the years, of course; so had the decor; so had the menu; so had the clientele, once almost all gay men. But Rudolf clung to his weekly ritual of dining there alone. The waitress was polite, even kind, during their brief interactions. Otherwise, no one took any notice of him. If only he had become a spy! This invisibility could have been

    The Epicure

I really like the phrase "leftover food critic."

    Chapter 7

Thanks! My next idea isn't so comic, but I'll be trying to vary the tone as I consider other story ideas.
