    Chapter 36

    Good dirty fun!
  2. Pireno devoted most of the afternoon to washing clothes and the rags that passed for Saghir’s blankets. Anavuizhur, a tall, silent giant with red hair much like Saghir’s, laid a freshly-killed goose by the fire and helped Saghir out to relieve himself. Seeing how heavily Saghir leaned on the bigger giant, Pireno knew he would not be able to do the same for him. While Anavuizhur attended to Saghir, Pireno took his knife and an improvised digging stick and went out foraging. He was lucky enoug

    Atonement

Oo! This gives me an idea for a future grammar lesson for Saghir, in which he tries to learn to use the forms of the verb "to be," and just can't quite get the nuances, like the distinction between verbs and adjectives.
  4. Pireno moved through the mess of the tent toward Saghir’s head. “Yes, Master. Very dirty. I had no one to wash me.” Saghir looked away. “Why word master? You free. I not master by you. You not slave by I. You not say Master. You say Saghir.” He thought a moment. “Daigitsa Saghir.” Saghir’s words came with effort, whether from pain or to disguise the effect of alcohol, Pireno couldn’t tell. He reached a hand to Saghir’s forehead. Saghir jerked away only slightly at the touch.
  5. Chapter One: Catching Up Giants leave a broad, messy trail. They make no effort to erase their tracks, and their horses would make that impossible anyway. Of course giants don’t ride horses, but they find them indispensable as pack animals. Pireno probably could have followed the trail at night by smell alone, but chose adequate sleep instead. Even on foot, the giants moved fast. Pireno judged by the freshness of the horse manure that he was gaining on them, but only slowly. Maybe one mo

    Giants

Thank you, and you're right - it would be a challenge for Bilinu to be accepted among the giants after providing secret support for the fight against them. I'm mulling ideas for a sequel.

    Loyalties

But.. that WAS a happy ending. Pireno finally gets his priorities in order. But seriously, I'm thinking about continuing with a sequel.

    Loyalties

I wanted to make sure I understood Pireno. "This was in the summer?" "Yes, two months after midsummer." "You said you were curious to find out where this would go. Did you think about what might happen in a few months?" "I didn't. I didn't think at all. I just lived, day to day, busy with work and serving Saghir. The more involved I was in his life, the less I talked to people. But I couldn't help seeing what was going on in the village." "It must not have been long afterwards that food star

    Occupation

I interrupted Pireno’s story again. "So Saghir left for the day, and you didn't try to escape?" "No, I didn't." "Just as you hadn't when he sent you to get straw." "That's right." "Why?" "For one thing, it seemed risky. Also, and I know this is going to sound strange, I felt that the village owed him something after he lost his friend." "But we lost men, too." "Yes. I didn't feel any great personal tie to the smith, though, in spite of working for him all those

    Spoils of War

When I retired from my post in the Imperial capital to live in this remote village, my fellow bureaucrats thought I was mad. They laughed at my intention to chronicle life here, sure that nothing more interesting than a cow getting stuck in a ditch would ever happen. Neither they nor I foresaw an invasion by giants ten years after my arrival. You may have heard of the young blacksmith Pireno as a hero of that time -- or maybe as a traitor. Years earlier, he had been my pupil, in my little sc
