    Chapter 2

Mr. Phillips sat on the edge of his desk as I knelt in front of him, offering him his pen. He took it and laid it down on the desk, then put a hand on my head. "That's a good start. That's the kind of motivation I like to see. How about if you show me some more?" I looked into his eyes, and then my head glided forward. His hand guided my head toward that flap over his zipper. "Just breathe on it. I want to feel your warm breath through my pants." I buried my face in the growing bulge.

A man who says he's going to call and then does? Why would one be skeptical that such a thing exists?

    Chapter 1

I flipped through the magazine pages as I sat in the loan officer's outer office, but I didn't really read anything. Mostly I stewed, annoyed at being kept waiting. I'd begged Stewart to come in early to cover for me just so I could get here on time and now Mr. Big Shot, or Ms. Big Shot, whoever, had me on hold. Big enough shot to have a secretary, anyway. Oh, excuse me, executive assistant. Anna Porter, according to her name plate. "Mr. Phillips will see you now." Ms. Porter's voice star
  6. Rich needs a loan. So he really shouldn't slip into inappropriate behavior toward his loan officer.
  7. Thanks! Sometimes when you look at old photographs, you just know there are stories behind them...
  8. In the words of the little girl in "The Exorcist," it burns, it burns.
  9. Somehow the list immediately suggested a puzzling old assemblage. At least, it did once I dropped the idea of a MacGyver episode. The traces of desire are everywhere.
  10. Clayton was already rolling his eyes with impatience, and this was only the third yard sale he and Gary had been to. "Gary, come on. I don't want to waste the whole day doing this. It's so warm, we could be at the beach." "I'm gonna look at the jewelry." Gary strolled away from the younger man, who promptly got absorbed in his phone. On a table cluttered with horrid decorative dishes and glassware was a sign, "YOU BREAK IT, YOU BUY IT." Well, pleased to make your acquaintance, too. Under

    Juna

Details? I was too busy inventing the Giantish language! Glad you liked it.

    Juna

I may come back to them, but I think I'll write some other things first. I've never written a serial before. It was fun.

    Juna

Yes, it's over! I had telegraphed the ending anyway. There's always room for more (perhaps something about the Empire - Juna growing up, and going to the capital to study advanced mathematics, and the Emperor not liking the fact that Luzig and other places are acting so independently; and maybe something about a different group of giants, traditional rivals of Saghir's group) but I think this is enough for this round. Glad you enjoyed it! Maybe next time there will be a truly evil giant. I can't believe that even Ulukhar ended up having redeeming qualities.
  15. At Vella’s house, Vella and Pireno conspired to leave Saghir alone with Juna. The visit had started well, with a freshly-bathed Juna impressing Saghir with her lack of odor. And, as before, Juna was as delighted to see the giant. “Vella, Saghir was amazing at shiluntam. That’s the giants’ council. He added to the agreement that any person who is half-giant, half-human, could live on the Island. So he’s really allowing for the possibility.” “Sounds like more than that.” “Oh, you don’t kn
  16. Pireno and Saghir found the giants camped by a river that wound through high rolling hills, not far from a town. On watch they found Nadzaimir, a beardless giant not much taller than Saghir. Nadzaimir greeted them and went to bring Ulukhar. “Master, does Nadzaimir fight as a warrior? He looks so young.” “Nadzaimir not young. And Nadzaimir not he. Nadzaimir giantess. Nadzaimir good warrior.” “Oh. All this time I thought he was just a very young man. Giant, rather. But she’s a gi
  17. On an autumn evening Pireno and Saghir reached Pireno’s old village. Their journey east had followed many days in Luzig, meeting with Galipo and then with the city council, to consider conditions for a permanent trading establishment on the Island of Broken Bones. Galipo had given them a pack horse for their travels. The weather was much warmer than when had they traveled west, and they took a more southerly route. Apprehensive about how the villagers might receive their visit, Pireno led

    Finlar's Wife

I found as I was writing that the story of Saghir and Pireno gave me a chance to comment not just on gay relationships, but also on interracial ones.

    Finlar's Wife

To a certain extent I based the culture of the giants on Vikings and archaic Greeks. They both did the sizing-up-the-locals, trade with them or raid them thing. I did want to eliminate the worst of their sexism.
  20. Finlar’s wife ushered Saghir and Pireno into her home. She set out sweets and a cold herbal decoction and found a child’s high chair for Pireno, and they all sat together. The conversation proceeded in Giantish. Saghir addressed her as Izalis Finlar’s Wife (Finlalik muan Izalis), so Pireno stowed that away in his memory as the formal mode of address. But his mind kept wandering to her beard. The giantesses he had seen at the shore did not have beards. Did some giantesses have beards and

    Loyalties

I'm glad you found Book 1. Book 2 will make a lot more sense now.
  22. As Galipo led them northward through the streets of Luzig to the piers where ships were docked, he spoke mostly to Saghir but kept an eye on Pireno. The trading house was finished now and Galipo was very pleased with it. The weather had warmed early, leaving little sea ice. Pireno had said goodbye to Hesnik, who was sorry to lose him, and packed his belongings, with special care for Finlar’s pendant and one other small bundle. He had tied his last daily knot in his third tally string and was

    City Life

I've become quite fond of him myself, even if he is kinda short.
  24. By mid-morning Saghir was carrying Pireno on his shoulders through the city streets. When Saghir had built a fire in the courtyard to heat water and Pireno’s food, the owner of the inn had reacted as if Saghir were trying to burn the inn down, and ordered him to leave. Saghir took his time getting Pireno ready to go and gathering their possessions. The sight of a giant with a hunting bow, arrows and a spear, carrying a young man on his shoulders, attracted stares on the street, many of them
