  1. Dustin arrived at the viewing for Joey on Sunday evening planning to simply pay his respects and slip away unnoticed. It would be the first time he would see many of his classmates from high school since the day he graduated. He still hadn’t bothered to shave, and he didn’t even care. He felt like there was a tight knot in the pit of his belly. The parking lot was full of cars, and the line into the funeral home stretched all the way out the door. The conversations Dustin overheard dw
  2. So the latest "Halloween" movie decided to forget about every other sequel and serve as a direct sequel to only the events of the first Halloween movie. It made me wonder, what would a distant sequel to the original Star Wars movie look like if we totally ditched every other sequel. No Empire Strikes Back, no "I am your father," no prequel trilogy. No Yoda or Jar-Jar. No "Luke and Leia are twins." Just a random kid who fired a "one in a million" shot and blew up the Death Star. What would a movie like that look like? Would you want to see it?
  3. The twists and turns of the BBD triangle! The very thing (person) that Brett and Dustin fought over for years was the thing that brought them together. (And in typical Billy-fashion, he was oblivious to the whole thing.) And yet, they want to be friends on their own terms, and not because Billy wants them to get along. And don't miss the moment toward the ending! Dustin finally let go of Billy. And he could do it, at long last, because he finally has come to respect and appreciate Brett. That may be the defining moment of the whole story! Will he finally allow himself to love, now that he's not trying to hold on to something that could never be?
  4. Thanks! Watching the development of the Brett-Dustin feud turning into what it has become is one of the best things about the whole story for me.
  5. He's both disturbed and thrilled by the dreams, isn't he?
  6. But there are so many jackasses in this story!
  7. “Hand me that fucking wrench, you lazy piece of shit,” Dustin’s dad ordered. Dustin quickly grabbed the tool and handed it to his father as he worked under the car. “No, you fucking idiot! Not this wrench! You worthless, useless piece of garbage! How did you get so goddamn stupid?” Frank bellowed angrily. “Sorry,” Dustin replied, taking the wrench back from his father. Then he calmly kicked the jack out from under the car, crushing his father beneath the vehicle
  8. So, last chapter was kind of like putting on an old comfortable pair of sneakers, huh? Back in Billy's house. Back to the three boys arguing over deep issues. Billy being Billy even after three years. (Has that boy ever won a bet in his life?) It felt like home, didn't it? Now, we get to the real good stuff! Brett and Dustin, alone in a car together. Business is about to pick up! From The Answer in the Blood: “Don’t expect me to be a replacement for Joey.”
  9. Well, Luke is an asshat, that's for sure. I think this chapter was the real family reunion.
  10. Brett's grief over the loss of his brother is one of the keys to the story. I think we'll get a deeper understanding of Brett in this story than we did in WAR.
  11. It's just like old times, only maybe now they're a little wiser and a little less eager to destroy each other. Mr. Taylor's words hit him at the worst possible time. Dustin was already feeling worthless and hopeless. Mr. Taylor just threw gasoline on the fire. We've only just begun exploring the Dustin/Brett relationship.
  12. I knew someone who stopped taking their insulin because their problems were too overwhelming. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. Part of that experience has shaped how this story has gone and is going.
  13. Or if he does understand that someone loves him, he wonders how long it will be before they let him down like everyone else.
  14. Dustin with a gun has always been a dangerous idea. Even if Luke was lying, it doesn't mean Dustin didn't get something from somewhere.
  15. A second cousin is almost like being with the person, right?
  16. The gentle rain had turned into a downpour by the time Dustin reached the highway after leaving Sarah’s neighborhood. Between the rain and his tears, Dustin was having a terrible time seeing anything. He swerved a few times but managed to keep himself upright for most of his journey. But as the rain fell harder, Dustin’s sense finally convinced him to pull off the road and wait for the rain to dissipate. He parked the bike along a sharp curve in the road and began to bawl. All of the emotions of
  17. 😎 Got to keep my reputation going!
  18. All of this is spot on, and was even in 2008 when the story takes place, before the PrEP era. But the real key to this isn't that Dustin thinks he's got it (and as the top his chances of getting it from one encounter with no blood are slim anyway.) The real issue for him is this quote: “Why wouldn’t he have told me?” Dustin asked himself.
  19. And if you haven't read "The Acquittal," you can find it right here on Gay Authors! 😉
  20. Uh, thanks? We'll earn our happy ending together, but yeah, Dustin's in a real mess at the moment. If only he had some friends to turn to!
  21. What really twisted the knife was that for just a minute Dustin was beginning to think about the future. What happens now that his hope for the future has been destroyed? After everything he went through, this one broke him. You can just watch him crumble as Mr. Taylor destroys his spirit.
  22. That's her! But like John Cena, you can't see her!
  23. Thank you! What I hope makes Luke such a good character is that he's believable. He's not a card-carrying, moustache-twirling villain like Mr. Taylor. He's just a dumb twenty-something kid whose feelings got hurt and he retaliates in such a petty way. He's more angry that Dustin and Nate are laughing at him behind his back than anything else. He doesn't realize he pulled the pin on a hand grenade.
  24. The nature of serial writing, unfortunately. Have to leave you hanging for a bit. You've got it regarding Dustin believing Luke. Luke's given him no reason to believe he's lying to him. And yes, Heather McKenzie remains a mystery!
  25. Thanks for the compliments! I'll be honest, I loved writing this one because there's so much going on and we learn so much about the characters. I'm an "earn your happy ending" kind of guy. But what I really enjoy is knocking down the dominoes that have been set up. You kind of know what's coming in my writing.
