    All of this is spot on, and was even in 2008 when the story takes place, before the PrEP era. But the real key to this isn't that Dustin thinks he's got it (and as the top his chances of getting it from one encounter with no blood are slim anyway.) The real issue for him is this quote: “Why wouldn’t he have told me?” Dustin asked himself.

    Uh, thanks? We'll earn our happy ending together, but yeah, Dustin's in a real mess at the moment. If only he had some friends to turn to!

    What really twisted the knife was that for just a minute Dustin was beginning to think about the future. What happens now that his hope for the future has been destroyed? After everything he went through, this one broke him. You can just watch him crumble as Mr. Taylor destroys his spirit.

    Thank you! What I hope makes Luke such a good character is that he's believable. He's not a card-carrying, moustache-twirling villain like Mr. Taylor. He's just a dumb twenty-something kid whose feelings got hurt and he retaliates in such a petty way. He's more angry that Dustin and Nate are laughing at him behind his back than anything else. He doesn't realize he pulled the pin on a hand grenade.

    The nature of serial writing, unfortunately. Have to leave you hanging for a bit. You've got it regarding Dustin believing Luke. Luke's given him no reason to believe he's lying to him. And yes, Heather McKenzie remains a mystery!

    Thanks for the compliments! I'll be honest, I loved writing this one because there's so much going on and we learn so much about the characters. I'm an "earn your happy ending" kind of guy. But what I really enjoy is knocking down the dominoes that have been set up. You kind of know what's coming in my writing.

    Luke may be my finest villain yet. And there's a connection coming next chapter that may be surprising! Mr. Taylor, back from the past to bring pain and misery once again! River rats should simply be drowned at birth in his world. Mwahahahahahaha!!!!!!!11 That was one of my more clever ideas. We had to go 94 chapters before we pulled out that trick!

    Adults have almost always been useless in the Mon Valley world. Of course, WAR was written from the perspective of a teenager and Dustin's World from the perspective of a horribly abused young man, so there might be some bias.

    Brett Reilly couldn’t believe he had found himself once again standing outside the local police station of his hometown. He was so frustrated he could almost spit. His brother walked through the doors, escorted by a police officer who removed the handcuffs and released Joey into his brother’s care. “Hey, I appreciate this,” Joey said, offering a smile to his brother. “No you don’t,” Brett snapped. “If you appreciated it, you wouldn’t keep winding up in this situation!”
