Like the movie Groundhog Day, it was the typical replay of that moment when a guy first wakes up – sensory stimuli competing with human physiology. Dry mouth. Light in the room. Muskiness. The morning woodie. Street noise in the distance. A slight aching of resting muscles. Slow breathing. Spence smelled the coffee and knew that his brother was getting ready for school. It meant Spence had to get up early and pull himself together in order to have breakfast with Kevin – a half-hour of cap

The naked club room before Spike conjured up in his mind what a girl must look like the morning after too much wine, too little sleep and no makeup. She’d been a knockout before…and probably could be again. But right now…whoa. ‘Maybe Lindsey Lohan in one of her bleakest Internet moments?’ As a counterpoint, he dug into his memory bank and recalled some of his clients from hell…like the old duffer who’d croaked on him. That had been a crazy experience. This was the room from hell. At least

As the newly appointed C.O.O. of the Gallant National Bank – stepping in for his dad when he’d permanently returned to New York – Lou Gallian, Junior, kept a crushing schedule as he nudged the institution back to solvency and respectability. Even the more vocal naysayers in financial journalism circles – who had reacted with negative charges of nepotism when ‘Junior’ was promoted – were impressed at his fiscal savvy. The bank had paid back the TARP loan and was creating a positive ‘buzz’

The Trotters had a quiet dinner Thursday, the evening before Spence’s journey east. Spence had made a ‘to do’ list that also included writing Cray and Spike’s cell phone numbers on the kitchen memo board. The previous week’s meeting between the four guys had gone well, although Spence had to leave early because of his ‘job’ schedule; and Kevin’s attitude about his minders had been very positive. He’d told Spence afterwards that ‘the dudes are cool’ and the idea of ‘having two more older gay brot

Bob gladly confirmed that he’d be able to join the volunteer movers for pizza when Cray had called earlier in the afternoon. It was an excuse to leave work after a hellish day, avoid going home to an empty house – Drew being out of town on business – and to just ‘hang’ with Spike, Cray and two of Cray’s closest pals – Benny and Tim. Several unopened boxes were stacked in the dining area of Spike’s new downsized base of operations and the relocated pieces of furniture were randomly staged

The two men, in a cuddle that was way beyond brotherly – definitely incestuous if they had been of blood relation – stirred as the new day’s sun crept into the bedroom. Spike opened one eye to verify that his visitor was not a wonderful apparition. The warmth of Cray’s body was something that Spike wanted to savor as the room became brighter. Their legs intertwined; Spike’s arm rested across Cray’s chest, and his head nestled in Cray’s pit. The muskiness of Cray and a few stray underarm hairs aw

A whirring, grinding drone awakened Spence. ‘Fuck.’ He opened one eye and realized the noise was the vacuum sweeper being used in the next room. ‘Morning sure came fast…or is it still morning?’ It had been a very productive and profitable Monday night. He knew that Kevin – his neat-freak brother – was anxious to clean the new apartment and the noise was a not-so-subtle message to get out of bed and help. A glance at his watch verified what Spence’s stomach was telling him – it was just after noo

Since their initial meeting at the gym in April, Jack Gamble had been over to Phil’s condo for intimate encounters numerous times, and Phil Perez had visited Jack’s home. As springtime moved closer to summer, each man eagerly looked forward to the frequent workout sessions at the gym and the comfortable banter that resulted when together – spontaneous humorous jabs and personal tidbits that occur between buddies who trust each other as they forge a friendship. And when their schedules matched, t

The thought of his on-the-house Saturday afternoon ‘appointment’ and ‘test’ amused Spence. He drove from his apartment – miraculously pulled together over the previous few days by Kevin and him – to the Mandalay Bay. Brad had referred to the date as a lab practical exam: in this case, a very loyal and prized client was to be entertained by Spence on a complimentary basis. The quid pro quo was that the client would offer feedback about the experience to Brad – it would be a pass or fail situation

Spence got the idea of how Brad wanted the interview to go, took a deep breath and peeled off the varnish. The family situation, or lack of it, was the easiest to explain and he felt relieved that Brad seemed to have a sympathetic ear. In fact, Brad told Spence that a runaway boy had, two years earlier, lived in the house that he shared and became sort of a combination house mascot and little brother. “I suppose we should start with your vital stats,” Brad said, slowly scanning Spence’s b

During the morning family breakfast on Wednesday, Drew brought up – in vague terms – the need for household and entertainment expenses to be reduced wherever possible. Not eating out as often, less first-run movies, making do with their current wardrobes, fewer iPod downloads…things that, when lumped together, took a major hit on the household budget. He and Bob informed Cray that both of their salaries had been temporarily cut back and would remain so until the recession had run its course.

Lake Las Vegas – an ambitious development that included several golf clubs, resorts and residences – was only 17 miles east from the Strip but it could have easily been in another country. The lifestyle there was akin to old world gentility when compared to the over-the-top gaudiness of its flashy neighbor. However, creatively themed appearances were a shared characteristic. In the case of LLV – as locals generally referred to the community – it was a Mediterranean-slash-Tuscan-slash-village des

Although they had relinquished ‘foster parent’ status when Cray reached his 18th birthday, Drew and Bob still thought of this handsome young man as their ‘son’ and an equal part of their family unit. In this context, they discussed their Cray’s predicament while they drove to work. Their conclusion was that they’d need to be supportive and lay out an emotional safety net in case Cray stumbled. ‘It’s not likely that he’ll take a dive,’ Drew thought as they silently rode the staff-only elevator fr

NOVEL. In Shifting Sands, time has advanced one and a half years. Drew Reichardt and his partner Bob Harrington have kept busy working at the luxurious Barcelona Resort and Casino while forming a family unit that includes young Cray Gamble. Spike, Lou Jr., and Mario all return in this continuing tale that takes place in a recessionary Entertainment Capital of the World. And Jack Gamble becomes a featured character as events unfold. Book 3 of the Vegas trilogy.

He hadn’t seen it coming. Earlier in the day, disturbing bolts of emotions sparked the lurking insecurities burrowed deep inside the sub consciousness of this young man, recently turned 18. Cray Gamble was literally stunned when his boyfriend announced that their partnership was over – news that was not even remotely expected in his day-to-day life. The possibility that Michael Turner wanted out, after almost two years, was unfathomable – zero, on a scale of one to ten. However, the impossi

Chapter 24 New Year's Eve - Eastern and Western Promises
Jack Scribe posted new chapter in Desert Fantasies
The noisy Griboyedov club in St. Petersburg erupted in celebratory chaos as the clock countdown struck midnight and announced the ‘old year’ was history. While hundreds of revelers hugged and danced in the New Year, a group of men huddled around a table in a private room at the rear of theformer air-raid shelter that had been turned into a nightclub several years earlier. The kilo tin of Beluga caviar had been depleted of its expensive contents. Stripped bare. It listlessly floated in the- 2 comments

The Friday night crowd at the Greyhound bus station was a mixture of servicemen arriving for a long weekend, kids coming home from school, couples of all ages, and several lonely looking souls. The minute Spike saw Henry step off the bus, he ran forward through the crowd. The Jensen brothers’ reunion was enthusiastic as they eagerly grabbed the other in a long, tight hug. Each spoke rapidly in an effort to catch up while walking back to the parking lot. Spike felt a definite change in their brot

By Thursday, the excitement of the previous weekend had been relegated to the news archives. The media had more important fish to fry: polygamist sects, a whacko jurist, celebrity gossip, nuclear waste, questionable land deals of a U.S. Senator and a pending water shortage. Murders in North Las Vegas were the norm and considered a part of routine reporting. News from the underbelly of Vegas was always in demand. Spike returned to the condo that afternoon and the gate guard greeted him wit

It was close to 11:00 p.m. before Spike was permitted to leave the condo. Gus, the appointed spokesmen for Gallant Security, focused on the activities related to the ground floor/garage area. He concocted a believable story for Spike to tell the police concerning his involvement. It was close to the truth…except Mario wasn’t involved. Spike told a detective that a security detail had driven him back to the condo tower. And it was Gus who initially called the condo to contact Jack while they were

Cray made record time pedaling home after he got the call on his cell from Bob. He had been over at Benny’s home playing three-on-three basketball with his friends on this lazy December Sunday afternoon. Cray was now a solid part of the pack that included Michael, Chris, Tim, Glenn and Benny. Bob’s brief conversation was very clear: there were some confidential, serious problems associated with Gallian Industries that were affecting their family. He suggested Cray tell his friends that th

The ‘shakedown’ soft opening of Barcelona gathered momentum over the next month as word spread amongst gaming devotees and weekend refugees from L.A. Throughout Nevada, California and Asia, the buzz about this newest wagering Mecca was positive. As a P.R. ploy, Nick stated in an Entertainment Tonight interview that Barcelona would ante up the stakes. Anyone who won a million dollars from the casino would also receive a complimentary Bentley Continental GT Coupe. He knew the ‘whale’ clients Hong

“The good news is that Mr. Bromley and his guests had a marvelous time and thought your room service operations were first rate,” Drew said to Nigel Whitehead, the Food and Beverage Director. The Bromley party – Mr. and Mrs. Gallian were not specifically identified – had moved over to the Barcelona on the Monday after the opening and stayed until Wednesday morning. It was now late Wednesday afternoon and Drew was finishing critiquing the food and beverage department. Since the opening, he had co

The motorized whir of the vacuum droned on as Cray cleaned the carpets in the reception area of the Executive Office suite. He was in deep thought about the Chinese dinner coming up the next evening and this concentration masked the sound of someone behind him. A tap on his shoulder made him jump. He quickly spun around to see the grinning face of Lou Gallian in front of him. “You scared the beejesus out of me.” Cray smiled and switched off the vacuum. “Didn’t mean to startle you from you

“Lookin’ pretty sharp,” Drew said as Cray walked out of his room. “I’d say ‘dude’ but you’re probably somewhere between ‘lad’ and ‘dude’. Whaduya think, Bob?” “Hmmm. Getting pretty close to ‘dude’ material.” Bob winked at Cray and added, “Our son looks all grown up.” The idea of being legally a foster parent for the handsome young man’s remaining two years of minor status still caused Bob to pause and reflect about the responsibilities attached. “Although I’m sure he’d feel more comfortab

The Executive Committee meeting ended and Nick Maggiano asked Drew to stay behind in the large conference room. As the first week of October was coming to a close, the key VP’s were pleased at the progress of the training and had all expressed confidence that Barcelona would be ready for a ‘soft’ opening in two weeks. Each division head would conduct mini-meetings with their department heads later that day and the ‘need to know’ information would trickle down to the ‘worker bees’ in staff meetin
