Broadswords Chapter Twenty-Six The Flashback As the heat of the dragonfire began to increase, Daegon watched as the reds became oranges, which then became yellows, and finally whites. Though he was dehydrated, beads of perspiration began to pepper his skin. He felt himself fading out of consciousness. "You must never let them see you sweat!" Vyrik said, grunting as he hoisted his sword before him. It was a heavy sword, Daegon knew, as it was one of his many squire-related duties t

Broadswords Chapter Twenty-Five The Uncertainty It had been several days since Birten had been sequestered in Oestra. Though he was initially chained down for the majority of each day, his captors slowly began allowing him more and more time out of the restraints. He was, however, still confined to the overly white room. The first few days were the hardest. He was only granted reprieve from the shackles to eat and relieve himself. Even then, the food was delivered to the room and

I think that would even be kind of mild for Elsior! He’s not up to anything good, that’s for sure.
-
Something’s gotta give, right? Our primary heroes are all finding themselves in quite problematic predicaments.
-
Ha! Ain’t that the truth! That could be a subtitle for the story. 😜
-
Are you referring to the one Birten has currently? It’s not meant to be anything special, it’s just a standard, run-of-the-mill dagger.
-
I think in this case, they are absolutely good judges of Elsior!

It could be said that Harmon just got lucky, as he’s been struggling to find any information on the subject. He sure hasn’t been very successful with much else thus far. However, it’s also indeed very convenient that the one book he’s able to find regarding any of the mancies is on the one he’s specifically trying to get answers on. Curiouser and curiouser.... 😉

Broadswords Chapter Twenty-Four The Library Since his discovery of the book regarding the mancies within the Dark Collective, Harmon had torn apart the library in search of other material regarding the subject. Lessa, being the bookworm that she was, had caught him a few times in the midst of a whirlwind of books. She seemed to decide against replaying their scuffle the other day, as she simply backed out of the room on each subsequent encounter. Regardless of the could-be interru

There sure is a lot of our heroes finding themselves unconscious, isn’t there?

Broadswords Chapter Twenty-Three The Focus It had been a week since Elan had discovered that the chasm was chock full of dragon babies, yet he was no closer to formulating a plan than when Kep had first brought the situation to his attention. He wasn't used to being at a loss for ideas. He'd brought the issue to the king, but the reaction he'd received was far from what he'd expected. It wasn't that the king disbelieved him – no; on the contrary, the king seemed extremely convince

I think Daegon is proving to be one of the more complex characters. There is a whole plethora of under-the-surface stuff he has to come to grips with, since he seems to always put on a facade. As far as his current state, he sure is in a pickle isn’t he?

Great question! Harmon's interest in Elsior is primarily threefold: a) it's taboo - though Harmon may not have fully been aware of how his father would react to their relationship, he would clearly know that the mixing of royalty and servants would be off limits; b) Elsior's devil-may-care attitude - Harmon is used to everyone being so formal with him, when he finally meets someone else that treats him like a normal person, he instantly appreciates it; and c) as you mentioned, yes, because he hasn't had too many alternatives. Harmon is absolutely the least fleshed out of the primary characters, and one we have the least insight on. However, we will see as the story goes on that Harmon is still coming into his own. He has the most room for development, and thus will take the longest to grow.

The heroes sure don't have it easy, do they?

I think this part of your comment rings especially true, which will definitely become more apparent as the tale progresses.
-
Oh, we’ll get some Elsior quite soon. 😬
-
Dorre is indeed a mystery!
-
Thanks! 😀

Thank you very much! That is an incredible compliment. It is a skill I have not always had, so I’m glad that I’ve been able to develop it over the years. I hope the characters continue to feel fleshed out going forward!

Broadswords Chapter Twenty-Two The Confinement Daegon was thirsty. While Elsior had continued to supply him with food and water, it was just enough to keep him coherent. Why he was keeping him alive at all, he wasn't sure. It would have been easy enough to have the dragon rip him apart, ending his life in mere moments. Yet Daegon awoke each morning to find a small amount of bread, vegetables, and liquids awaiting him. After the first few days, he'd quickly learned that the portions we

I was somewhat hesitant to do a chapter from Elsior’s point of view, because for 20 chapters we’ve only seen it from our main 5. I didn’t know if throwing another POV at this point would be weird, but I felt that it was important at this time in the story. I’m glad it brought a deeper distaste for Elsior, as that was the goal! As far as Rea, she is going to be an interesting character in the midst of everything. There are going to be several new characters appearing soon, or ones that have been mentioned in passing but have not yet actually shown up.

Broadswords Chapter Twenty-One The Oneiromancer Everything was going as planned. In a perfect scenario, of course, Harmon would have sent Jhirdyr's top-ranked slayer into Dorre. But regardless of which ranking Daegon was, it was still one less slayer in the kingdom. It wasn't like Harmon was in on the plan. He was just another unwitting participant in Elsior's scheme. A part of him might have felt a tinge of guilt for using his former lover as a pawn in his game, but any remorseful em
