“The door was unlocked.” Damien grins, leaning against the wall and wiggling his fingers in a wave. “Pretty sure that’s not an invitation to let yourself in. Get the hell out of here.” Jasper’s ability to remain in control of his emotions is draining fast. Damien sways and leans back against the wall. “No thanks. Where’s Ryan?” he asks, stumbling towards Jasper. “In your bedroom, I’m guessing. Is he dressed, or is this going to be my lucky night?” Damien turns to give Jasper a devious

“I need you,” Ace’s demand and the slamming of the door behind him startles Leo from his studying. “Are you okay?” Leo asks, closing his textbook and turning his full attention to Ace. Ace doesn’t even reply, he just walks right up to Leo and straddles his lap with determined intention in his gaze. Leo gulps. He can feel Ace’s racing heart thumping against his chest. “Why haven’t you tried to break my rules?” “What?” Leo leans back a little, taken completely off guard.

When Jasper and Ryan arrive at the ceremony location Luke had given, Jasper is incredibly confused. They are parked out the front of a modern-looking house. A high white brick fence guards the entrance, but the metal gate is left open and Simon’s car is parked in the driveway. Jasper can’t stop smiling at the way Ryan holds his hand as they walk inside. The interior is gorgeous, decorated with candles and flower petals scattered on wooden polished floors. The only furniture is a table and t

Depression sleep never fails to leave Ryan more exhausted, despite having slept heavily for longer than usual. He’d woken up when Jasper got out of bed but fell back to sleep, and the next thing he knew, half the day was over. Half his last day with Jasper, for at least the period of the show, but given how closed off he’s been, he’s almost expecting Jasper will decide to end things soon enough. The worst part is, Ryan has no control over how he’s feeling and how those feelings are being pr

The Failure of Falling in Love
Littlelovestories commented on Littlelovestories's story chapter in The Failure of Falling in Love
I appreciate these comments so much. I'm not used to writing such sexually-focused relationships, so I am constantly worried about how it's coming across from a readers point of view. -
Ace is surprised when he wakes to an empty bed. He’d expected Leo to have fallen asleep beside him, not sneak out. He’s not sure if he’s glad to have been given his space, or worried that Leo didn’t want to be near him. After swiping away the messages Carter had sent through the night, he opens his and Leo’s texts. Struggling to find the right words, he closes it again. Lucky for him, there’s a gentle knock and Leo’s voice on the other side of the door calls out, asking if it’s okay to come

Preparation for Ryan’s dance show is exhausting. When he’s not at the gym, Ryan’s at home stressing. Even Jasper offering to practice some choreography would set him off in a panic, as if he’s got a quota of talent that he can’t risk using up with Jasper in their living room. He knows his obsession with every little detail has forced him to block out everything that doesn’t have to do with his new venture. He doesn’t feel as guilty about mentally checking out of Simon’s focus activities as he do

“Just act normal, okay?” Jasper says in a loud whisper when the elevator doors open on his apartment floor. “You’re gonna fuck this up immediately.” Blake laughs. Jasper shakes his head, falsely confident he can keep the fact that he’s high from Ryan. He even pauses at the door and gestures at his face like he’s collecting himself, ready to act stone cold sober. “Hi,” Ryan calls down the hall when they enter the apartment. Jasper’s jaw drops open as he turns to Blake. “Oh my

“On a scale of being fine, to being a sobbing mess on the floor, where are you at about Ryan leaving?” Blake asks lightheartedly when Jasper arrives at Daniel’s office only ten minutes late, but on his own. “First person to make me crack over this will get punched, so proceed with caution on those questions in the future,” Jasper answers. “For real though, is Ryan all good?” Jasper shrugs. “Just that cute little depression quirk he has.” “You mean you haven’t cured his mental

Ace is in his room, where he’s promised he’d be for the remainder of the semester, yet Leo’s hesitant to join him tonight. On one hand, he’s glad Ace sees him as a safe person he could run to. On the other, he’d hoped Ace would come to him by choice, not out of necessity. He’d assumed this was Ace’s way of putting more obstacles between himself and Carter, and the way he dropped the safe words while Carter was trying to talk him out of joining the frat confirmed that. He’s hoping Ace is okay, an

“Is Ryan not getting up?” Blake asks as Jasper joins them at the edge of the cliff the following morning. After joking that Jasper would sleep in and Ryan would take his turn for him, it’s Ryan who isn’t getting out of bed. Neither of them had slept too well after their emotional conversation earlier that day about families and how they see their future together, or not. They probably could have gotten a better sleep if they weren’t clinging to each other, but they needed the closeness and

“Jasper?” Blake’s footsteps come crunching towards him in the dark. Jasper turns his phone flashlight on so Blake can follow the light over to him. “You chuckin’ a piss, or have you been eaten by a bear?” “Sorry. There’s just a lot going on. I needed to have some time.” Jasper stares up at the sky, concentrating on the view of the stars which shine brighter in the moonless sky through the branches and leaves above him, searching for that peace Ryan said he’d felt. “You know, the whole

There’s nothing Jasper wants less than to trudge up a mountain and spend the night camping. But the band committed to immersing themselves in each other’s interests for a week each and apparently, they’ll understand Simon when they reach the top of this hill that Simon will probably somehow relate to reaching new heights or conquering an uphill battle. Right now, Jasper feels like it’s a metaphor for how draining and difficult everything in his life continues to be, but he’s only had a few broke

The morning sun shines through the lobby windows, lighting Ryan like the saint he is. He waits for Jasper, a large coffee in one hand, his other hand in his pocket. Even in yesterday’s clothes, Ryan looks too good to be true. “One real coffee,” Ryan says with a smile that lights up Jasper’s heart. It’d been a rough night at the hospital. Between the discomfort of the recliner chair, and the frequent nurse observation rounds, Jasper had a terrible broken sleep. Not to mention the overwh

Grace is already waiting for them across the road from their parent’s house, crouched low. At first Jasper thinks she’s trying to stay low so she’ll go unnoticed, but as they pull up beside her and she doesn’t even look up, he realizes she’s crouching in pain. Jasper gets out and opens the door for her, wrapping an arm around her back and helping her to her feet. She climbs in the back seat with a grimace. Jasper sits in the back, staying by her side, already on the phone to the hospital. H

“So, it looks inviting.” Ryan taps his fingers on the steering wheel. They’d been sitting out the front of Jasper’s parents’ house for twenty minutes already, but the sight of the front door he’d shut behind himself years ago has glued Jasper to his seat. “I’m so sorry. I know this isn’t fun.” Jasper sighs. “As I’ve said a hundred times already. We don’t know what they want until we go in there. It mightn’t be that bad.” “I very much doubt that.” “Yeah, you’ve said that

When Ace walks into the frat party that night, Leo is ready. He’s going to humiliate Ace, hopefully right to the edge of what Ace can take, then when he’s got Ace all to himself at the end of the night, he’s going to work out what’s going on, and what Ace needs someone to make him do. He’s hoping it’s to finally deal with Carter. He wants it for Ace, more than anything. He’s mostly given up the brief idea he had that he and Ace might have something. Leo doesn’t need Ace to choose him, he just ne

Only hours after agreeing to make a statement, Jasper is sitting beside Ryan in a media room at Henderson Records before a group of media reporters, clinging to all the patience he has within him and hoping the rest of the hour goes fast. “Do you have any comments to your fans regarding those intimate photos we saw recently of the two of you? Much of your fan base is teenagers or pre-teens that look up to you and displays like what we’ve seen from you aren’t very appropriate for their age.”

After a quick discussion at Jasper and Ryan’s apartment, Simon had called to arrange this meeting. Mark seemed eager to invite them straight over. It’d probably have been beneficial for the band to discuss it properly, but the consensus was that they’re all ready to get back into making music. So now they are once again, standing around in the air-conditioned hallway outside frosted glass doors, hoping they aren’t about to make another mistake with their careers. A young tan man in a crisp

Being ignored in the hallways wasn’t as easy to take as Leo thought. The week Ace had asked for feels like it’s taking an eternity, and he still has two more days to get through before he can ‘confront’ Ace. He hoped Ace would come to him, because the confused ramble before his goodbye sounded like another break-up on the way. He’s been holding onto the fact Ace stopped himself and asked for time to get back into a clearer headspace, instead of just saying what was on his mind then and there. Th

Jasper groans as his body, lethargic and stiff, refuses to budge. A hand rubs his shoulder and a soft kiss sends tingles down the back of his neck. “Take it slow. Your muscles might still feel a little numb.” Ryan’s soothing, calm tone brings Jasper out of his waking brain fog. Ryan gently helps Jasper roll from his side to his back. Jasper sighs as he lies flat on his back, glancing at the man beside him. His head throbs, stomach churns, throat and chest ache. Everything points to las

Leo opens his bedroom door, not feeling up to company, but craving it all the same. He and Ace hadn’t spoken the entire drive back to campus, neither did they acknowledge when they walked right past the dorms. Leo’s glad Ace is glued to his side, actually. He’s nowhere near ready to think about moving forward from Jordan and Bailey, but his deep concern for Ace tonight has been overwhelming. He had no idea how he’d get to sleep tonight not knowing if Ace is safe, and his bed being empty has been

The look of disappointment on Damien’s pretty face when Ryan isn’t the one approaching him obliterates the festering insecurity Jasper had been feeling all day. It doesn’t seem like Damien was really expecting Ryan to show up after all. “To what do I owe this pleasure?” Damien swishes his drink and pats the seat beside him. Jasper stands with his arms crossed, not falling for Damien’s phony politeness. “Cut the bullshit.” “Feeling threatened?” Damien’s cockiness is back annoyingly

Ryan was right. Moving in together after coming out and announcing their relationship publicly really was the best thing they could do. In the week after Jasper came out to the universe, and Ryan kissed him for all to see, the couple has been inseparable in their affectionate bubble. It’s been intense to the point of them seriously needing to leave the apartment and each other just to remind themselves there’s an entire world out there with other people in it. The two are becoming skilled at was

Everything is wrong. While a manic high felt like the incoming tidal wave, the manic low was the long drag out to sea. Ace can picture it himself. His body being pulled in a rip so powerful it’s impossible to fight. There’s no point resisting, and he’s too weak to even consider swimming back to shore. The wave is dragging him under, crushing him with its magnitude. It’s heavy on his chest, keeping him from taking a breath. And the wave builds and builds, as it draws him away. The world
