Jasper slides his key into the lock at the front door of their apartment and tiptoes inside. With any luck, no one will even know he’d not come home last night. “Well, would you look at what the cat dragged in?” Blake’s smug voice echoes through the silent house. Caught by the one person who would ask and ask and ask until he got an answer. “Since when are you awake this early?” “I haven’t slept.” Blake leans back in the lounge chair with his coffee. “You weren’t home when I

Ace should have given Leo his number, but he’d asked for time to consider the suggestion, then spent the next week avoiding him. In his defense, Ace had still been working his way though his low. Whether his medications are starting to work, or the depression fog is just naturally lifting Ace has no idea, but he wakes up ready to finally deal with college on Friday morning, motivated by the frustration that he’d missed almost a full week of classes over something so pathetic. Unfortun

“This smells amazing, Miss Kurtis,” Jasper says. “Thank you for inviting me to join you. It’s been forever since I’ve had a home cooked meal. Where should I sit?” “Beside me.” Ryan pulls out a chair for Jasper. “Mom, Jasper might be around a bit more. We’re dating.” Ryan’s confident and casual announcement shocks Jasper. To come out is one thing, but to actually have a boyfriend? Terrifying. At least that’s how Jasper had built up the idea of dating a man. It’d became an enormous deal

Less than half an hour later, Jasper’s phone goes off. To his surprise, it’s Ryan. Afraid of a possible confrontation, but also afraid to let this relationship that has so much potential slip away, Jasper answers. “Ryan, are you and your mom alright?” “Yeah, can you come over, please?” Ryan’s tone has calmed since their last conversation, but it does not make Jasper any less anxious about whether he’s ruined the relationship before it even has a chance to become a relationship. Ja

Chris stares back at Jasper, a frown knitted across his face. “You haven’t looked at the contract since you signed it. What could you possibly be concerned about?” he asks, relaxing back in his seat and crossing his arms. “I went through it not that long ago, with a lawyer. So, I want to know what it’s going to take for you to sign our music back over to us?” Jasper leans forward with a slight smirk on his lips. Despite Chris’s confident smile, Jasper knows he’s got all the power. “I c

“Please welcome the guys from The Obsolete!” Everyone waves towards the camera with excited smiles. Most of the time, being in a band feels like just their job. But at these events, the thrill of being considered celebrities comes back, and they get to indulge in the experience. Jasper sits between Ryan and Blake, a little extra bubbly today. Since their meeting everyone has been siding with him more whenever it came to Chris. And no one, not even Simon, has told him to reign his attit

Things between Ace and Taylor haven’t been comfortable, so it was no surprise when Taylor said he was hoping to move into ‘the frat’. He’s disgusted in himself for how his behaviour has affected Taylor, who has only been able to speak to him through messages since he came back to their dorm. Taylor’s inability to say a single word out loud to Ace shows just how much Ace destroyed the one friendship offered to him. Leo’s frat isn’t the only one on campus, but according to Taylor, it’s the on

Relieved to be home, Jasper retreats to his bedroom after a shower. He lies on his bed looking over his contract file again while everyone else gets cleaned up. He figures he should let them at least relax before dropping this shit pile on them. After today’s experience, this conversation cannot be better timed. No one can deny their mistreatment after witnessing Ryan pushed to his absolute limit on the boat in conditions that anyone could have known would end in someone getting heatstroke.

Jasper strides into the apartment with a mischievous grin on his face, glad to find Ryan still awake in the lounge room. “So, I didn’t even bother with the manager.” He throws down a stack of folders onto the kitchen table with a satisfyingly dramatic splat. “I just snuck into his office and stole all our contracts. Took them to a lawyer, explained the situation to see if we could get out of them and press charges against him for the mistreatment and mismanagement of us as artists under his

“Just Chris, I swear,” Jasper says, taking his phone out to read the story himself. Allegations are surfacing regarding The Obsolete’s new member, Ryan Kurtis, after an incident on his first official day with the band. A source alleges that the use of drugs led to Mr. Kurtis “passing out” after his first interview. The company is yet to make a statement regarding what disciplinary actions will be taken to ensure the new member’s substance use doesn’t negatively impact on the rest of the ded

“Ry—” Jasper’s voice brings a swell of comfort as it weaves its way through the absence of a dream. “Ry, wake up—” It’s still dark outside the cold window he wakes up resting against. At first Ryan is confused, then he sees Jasper beside him. His gaze travels down Jasper’s arm, to the jacket on the seat between them. Jasper smiles and gives his covered hand a comforting squeeze. “You okay?” Ryan nods and looks back out the window. “Where are we?” “It’s a surprise.” Jasper rel

It was Ryan’s turn to take a week away from the apartment, and Jasper has not been coping well. He understands Ryan needs space. In fact, he’s not so sure he is ready to fully confront things, either. He’d gone from being afraid of what kissing Ryan means to him, to being afraid that it mightn’t mean the same to Ryan. Not a fan of feeling this kind of anticipation, Jasper is desperate to get some kind of clarity. Tonight, they have the honor of performing at a large event. A crowded, busy e

Beth made a post on her social media, announcing that her relationship had ended with Jasper because they were much better off as friends. She also claimed that Jasper didn’t kiss anyone else while they were together and suggested they had broken up a while ago and just hadn’t announced it. “Aren’t you lucky that even after you treated her like nothing, she defends you?” Blake asks. Jasper read Beth’s post half a dozen times, thinking the same thing. Beth could have easily outed him an

Back when I had this published I was told it's considered mature due to the language and mental health themes, but readers often associate that tag with sexual content. Ryan does state his orientation soon as Demisexual and much of the relationship develops slowly with a focus on the emotional intimacy over the physical so I tag it as Asexual to avoid disappointing people who enjoy smut and are waiting for it to become more explicit.

After a sleepless night, the last thing Jasper wants is to leave the safety of his room and face today. He’d not even wanted to come home last night, and managed to sneak back in only after everyone else had gone to bed. When he walks out of his room, Jasper keeps his head down and avoids everyone other than Blake, who has no issue walking into Jasper’s room while he’s getting dressed, just to ask him if he’s okay. Apparently, Ryan told everyone last night that Jasper hadn’t been on the roof, so

It’d been a week since Jasper walked out of the practice room, and no one had seen or heard from him since. Other than asking if he’d reached out at all, they didn’t even talk about him. Ryan suspects there’d been plenty of conversations going on that simply did not involve him. To an extent, Ryan did appreciate not having to talk about it. The whole situation doesn’t bother him the way everyone probably assumes it does. Honestly, he got over being upset about it overnight. The more he’d thought

“I told you to stay in today, and you go out parading around town?” A chill runs down Ace’s spine at the sound of Carter’s voice and behind him in the empty hallway. Ace can see the door to his dorm, but Carter’s rapid footsteps catch-up and pass him. “Surprised you’re not in Leo’s bed. Did you have fun playing me tonight?” Carter asks, blocking Ace from walking any further. “Playing you? I was covering for you in front of your boss.” “You know I can see through your lies, so don’

“Trust me, you’ll like it.” Jasper screws his nose up in disgust at the bottle of tequila before him. “How? It has worms in it.” Blake throws his arm around Jasper’s shoulders and messes up his hair. “Let’s get one thing straight, entitled birthday boy. I didn’t buy it for you. The worm is my treat for having to deal with your lightweight drunken ass tonight.” “Oh, how dare you buy something for your own enjoyment on my birthday? You’re uninvited to the party. Speaking of, I’m goi

Ace wakes up in, confused to find himself in Carter’s bed. “Stay in today, babe. It’s for the best,” Carter fakes a caring tone as he walks over, buttoning up his shirt. “I love you. You still love me, right?” he asks, placing a gentle kiss on Ace’s forehead. Ace has no idea what the hell is going on, but he’s glad Carter allows Ace to answer the question with silence. “We’ll be okay. Start fresh. I’ve got classes all day, so I’ll see you tonight.” Carter is acting so weird, Ace

Ryan’s newfound confidence hits him much faster than Jasper expected. He practically struts into the practice room the following morning, with a smile on his face so blissfully genuine it’s impossible for Jasper not to mimic. “That fan page has over nine thousand fans on it now. See!” Ryan shows Jasper his phone. Countless photos and posts about him fill the page covered in reactions, emojis, and thirsty comments obsessing over him. None of which surprise Jasper. “Congratulations, you’

There's been significant editing, but it's the same story. I had to take it down due to publishing, but I wanted to post it again now that I have the rights to the work back.

A week’s worth of restrained annoyance, and Jasper has someone he can take his anger out on at last. Not even waiting to see Ryan or the others’ reaction, he launches his built-up rage at their manager like a missile. “He’s not ready to perform. Are you fucking kidding me?” “Take him for a quick warm up and run through.” Chris waves off his concerns, striding down the hallway. Jasper storms after him, not about to drop this. “A quick warm up and run through won’t change shit. You

Carter’s looking at Ace with an expectant smile, like he’s giving him a gift and awaiting the shocked appreciative reaction. Ace is staring back like a deer in headlights, an erratic panic in his beautiful eyes. A dozen twitches cross his face, like he’s not sure what reaction to settle on, but it’s clear it won’t be appreciation. “Did you not ask him if he wanted this?” Leo’s disgusted with himself for being here now that he’s seeing the discomfort Ace is paralysed with. He knew this would

Leo is on Ace’s mind all night. He’s so uncomfortable with what Carter had convinced him to do in Leo’s bed yesterday, that he couldn’t even sleep in his own, imagining the disgust of being in Leo’s position. He’s sure that was part of Carter’s plan all along, to make Ace come crawling back to him. He’s not sure what to feel when he receives a text from Carter demanding Ace come to his room in the middle of the night. He wishes he was enjoying this at all. He wishes he didn’t feel uncomfort

“Are you kidding me?” Carter glares at Ace across the kitchen table, spilling his morning coffee as he aggressively sets down the mug. “There’s no way in hell you’re pledging to that frat.” The steam from the coffee gives a ‘fuming with rage’ look as it passes over the pissed off expression Ace has become nonchalant towards already. “I want to.” Ace shrugs. “I figured you’d be in the frat, since you said you were the frat leader, but why should I miss out on the full college experience just
