Thanks, JohnnyC! Same to you - I hope you have a great New Year. And I hope you stay interested. We'll see how long of a story Wayne and Mark have - I really don't know either. Which is weird, and oddly inspiring. Hopefully I play well enough for us to end up with a good long story. -

These guys need to stay joined at the hip if they have any chance. you're right. They both sorta know it too. Mark is such a fucking bad ass. He really is. But ... we get to see his Achilles heel here. And he's nowhere near as savvy as Wayne is when it comes to the science of staying alive in the modern (in the nineties) age. Sure, he can survive out in the woods. But we're about to find out what Wayne brings to the equation. So hang on. 🙂 -

Zombies! Aieeee! 😄 Yeah, this game opens with these lines ... "This is how you die." So there are no illusions. There's no "winning". There's no end to whatever caused the apocalypse. There's just this new world, where you are trying to survive in a newly hostile environment. At first it bothered me. But now? Now, I kinda like it.- 29 comments

There are ZERO rainbows ahead, though there might be some lollypops. I know there are, actually ... they're about fifteen calories, and pure carbs. At least, that's what they are in the game. LOL. OMG, PLEASE don't evoke King here! lol. Yeah, this is definitely the beginning stages of an apocalypse. Is it something possible to live through? Is it something you'd WANT to live through? July 09, 1993 Friday, 11 PM) So much has happened. I'm still shaking hours later. God. I'm trying to calm down, but it's hard. We were nearly killed. I'm sure of it. If it'd not been for Mark, I'd be dead. After Martha attacked the dog, we watched her stagger off down the street. She was smeared with blood and had bite marks all over her arms. She didn't seem to feel any pain at all. Mark's expression during the attack shifted from shock to … I don't know. Assessment? He watched

June 4, 1993 (Friday evening) I started writing in this thing to document what's happening in this town. My name is Wayne Benson. I live in Rosewood, KY, and do engineering for Knox Construction. Anyway, I'm lying here in bed, and I can still smell it - even this far away. Mark and Elizabeth can too. It ain't as strong here, but we can all smell it. Hi, SAW. Thanks for the great comment on Guarded. This was one of the first stories I've ever written, and so there are mechanical issues here. But I do like the plot. And the suspense/mystery seemed to really work. I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading. And I hope you enjoy my other works as well. The next in the series, Camp Refuge is not a suspense/mystery, but a romance. Though, I still hope you give it a shot. Thanks again.

Like others here, I feel mixed things looking at these pieces. But ... there's one bit that stands out to me more than the rest. The last two lines of the last poem. But we cannot see His heart … can we? I love the doubt at the end. Can we really not know what is intended by whatever force created us? Or is it just out of reach at this moment, waiting for us to find it? Nice pieces, tim.

Thanks for the question, and for the nice comments! 🙂 My favorite character in the series is probably ... well ... Harlan. It's not because he's such a good person, but it's because he's a catalyst. He enters a scene and anything could happen. I love how he grew into far more than he was. I love how challenged he was with certain matters. And I love his cool, detached competence when he needed it. There are many others I love, but Harlan is my favorite - for good or ill. I do think I'll do more installments. I have ideas for both more Tales of the Refuge and for another addition. But time will tell there. Thank you again for the question.

Thanks for the question, kbois. I've met a lot of people over my life - lots of travel early on thanks to the Navy. My characters are largely based on memorable people I've met, but "memorable" to me likely isn't to most. I tend to notice the quiet ones. The ones trying to stay out of the way. But those folks often have the most interesting stories to tell. Some of my characters reflect that. Now ... Mamma G from Broken was another matter entirely. I really don't know where she came from at all, but she was a good time. 🙂
