chapter 10: : edited by viv : Jacob knew his mother was in Matt's house, he could here her muffled introduction to Matt's mother and the foot falls of the two as they walked down the short, tiled hall to the family room where he and Matt sat. Still, he waited for her to walk into the room, seeing the worry lapping in his mothers' placid brown eyes, before attempting to pull his sweaty palm from Matt's grasp. Matt firmed his grip, halting the attempted retreat of Jacob's han

chapter 9: : edited by viv : Jacob sprinted across the street, so intent was he on his goal of intercepting Matt that he failed to notice Viola, sitting in the car parked in the driveway, talking on her cell phone. Jacobs brisk run stopped abruptly as he landed on the front porch of the Porter residence. With an excited, shaky hand, he reached for the doorbell and ringing it, listening to the chimes echo through the empty house. Viola's head snapped in attention, twisting

chapter 8: : edited by viv : Matt's mind drifted over the nightmare and its lack of scary shadows or hideous monsters lurking just around the corner. Instead, the sun was shining in a sky filled with large cotton clouds, and birds could be heard chirping in the distance. Matt could actually remember the crisp scent of the spring air from his dream. With all of those plusses, the dream should have been one of the best he had ever had, not a polar bear or Eskimo in sight. It wasn

chapter 7: : edited by viv : Valerie stormed out of the house leaving the door to slam harshly in her wake, furious with Jacob for the pain he was causing Matt, and frustrated with Matt's stoic silence. She was set in her aim, wanting to do nothing more than rush to Matt, hold him, and wash all the fears he was suffering through away. That was what she was planning on doing, soothing Matt, that was, until her eyes fell on Jacob's house. Jacob's house sat there, dark and brooding,

chapter 6: : edited by viv : He smiled, spotting the pert young rear from a mile away. It was purely coincidental, the way the person reached forward, plucking a white peach from the mound of fruit displayed proudly. Coincidental because, that is exactly what the firm rear reminded him of, a nice ripe peach. Smiling at nobody in particular, he sauntered through the produce department, his eyes never leaving the backside of the young brunette who was returning the peach to the dis

chapter 5: : edited by viv : "So what the hell happened today?" Matt asked quietly, walking shoulder to shoulder with Jacob as they made their way along the shaded, narrow side yard of Jacob's house. Jacob shrugged slightly, trying to think of what to say while enjoying the innocent contact with Matt. "You don't even know the guy that well, and you bolted over a table to kick his ass," Matt said, his voice tinged with awe. "Mind if I swim in my boxers?" Jacob as

chapter 4: : edited by viv : "Crap!" Jacob groaned. The controller, which moments prior had been securely gripped in his hands as he maneuvered around a tight corner, flew arching through the air and landed with a thud on the ground. Jacob stared in disbelief as his choice Ferrari spun uncontrolled into a side wall and burst into flames. Matt sat chuckling on the floor between his spread legs, watching as the yellow Ferrari burned, and his blue Viper raced past the finish l

chapter 3: : edited by viv : Jacob felt like a complete idiot, wandering around a strange school for the last twenty minutes, with a sticker that might as well have screamed VISITOR. The word printed in bold red typeface, the date was scrawled in black Sharpie across the top of the sticker in a messy hand. The tacky look was completed by an unreadable signature in the same chicken scratch as the date. A smile crept across Jacob's face, the sticker plastered to his chest all

chapter 2: : edited by viv : Valerie scrutinized the interaction between Matt and their new neighbor from her position carefully, well as carefully as she could in the shadows and amber glow of the street lights. While she couldn’t hear everything that was said, the fact that they held hands a little longer then necessary didn’t fail to escape her attention. “So?” Val asked regarding Matt, as he slowly padded back up to her car, leaning against it. Matt remained silen

chapter 1: : edited by viv : Oak Meadow, a serene swath of earth nestled in the rolling hills of inland southern California. The original township, founded in 1885, was little more than a pit stop along the pony express. Two buildings stood nestled in a remote valley surrounded by hills covered with sturdy oak trees. It didn't take long for the quiet hamlet to transform into a thriving town. First through agriculture, then a mining conglomerate that decided they could make

You can't please everyone, and sometimes, you just have to settle for pleasing yourself. Matt is forced to accept this when he has to defend the life he realized he doesn't want to live without. The life that has been so carefully laid out for him for the last 17 years is changing, and Matt decides that it must be changing for the better if it includes Jacob, even if along with Jacob comes some hard decisions and some fights he didn't know he was quite ready to fight.

9:Leaving the Nest : edited by viv : “I can drive you,” Zach offered, a whisper in the dark, listening to the faint sounds of Cody’s feet shuffling along the matted carpeting. Cody stopped looking for his other shoe, and turned his attention instead in the direction of Zach’s voice. His reaction to seeing Zach lying on the bed, bathed in what little amber light entered the room from the window, covered partially with a tangle of bedclothes from the waist down, was a mixture of

8:Migratory Patterns : edited by viv : Warm sun glinted off the slow rippling water, ducks called out, whether in thanks, or in hopes of finding another day old chunk of bread being hurled in their direction, Cody didn’t know. Lifting his face to the sky, Cody imagined he could absorb some of the invisible energy. It didn’t matter if you couldn’t actually see it, because he felt it, an undeniable truth, much like the way lounging on the grass outside The Palace always seemed to p

7:Bound with Wax, Bound with Thread : edited by viv : “Why him?” Brandon asked, all of his weight pressing down on Damon’s feet as Brandon gripped the boy’s ankles securely. The two of them were alone in the high school gymnasium having decided to stay, with the permission of their coach, and get some weight training in after wrestling practice was done for the day. “Huh?” Damon asked, though the question sounded more like a grunt of exertion as Damon sat up again, before allo

6:How the Mockingbird Sings : edited by viv : The easy, knowing, smile that had graced Cody's face for his whole trip home melted under the heat of Joe's tone. Suddenly, all fantasies of the bassist, along with all hopes of a wrestler dissolved into the air of the San Francisco night as he stood on the sidewalk looking at a steely face he had never seen on Joe before. "What's up?" Cody asked as he made his way to the door which led up the steps to the apartments above the da

5:When Worlds Collide : edited by viv : Cody hung up the phone and tossed it aside in disgust. The temp agency had assured him the job tomorrow and Saturday night was a sure thing when he applied, but now there was a change; he had to show up at the building and undergo a final interview before being accepted for the position. He'd been careful with his finances for the last week, ever since the... the thing he didn't want to think about. If it weren't for that issue, Cody wou

4:Halcyon : edited by viv : A six-pack in, and Cody still wasn’t back from all that ‘nothing’ he’d needed to rush off and do. Joe didn’t know what to think, but as he sat there marinating in the words of the letter, anger and confusion dominated his thoughts. What confused him was that Cody wouldn’t share any of this with him, and he was angry for the same reason. Cody closing the world off from things he felt he could deal with was normal, but that didn’t mean it didn’t make Joe

3:Spreading Wings : edited by viv : Cinnamon raisin, or was it onion; blueberry or plain? He couldn’t remember. At one time Cody had told him which was the best bagel Saul made, but now, as he stared at the dozen or so varieties, all he drew was a blank. They all looked good, he knew that much; the large berries, which marred its glossy surface, and lavender hue of the blueberry. The visible dark swirls of exotic cinnamon on the cinnamon raisin. Even the one labeled Yorkshire l

2: Eating Crow : edited by viv : Dark, ebony painted wood framed the large picture window of Saul Braunstein's bagel shop in heavy fluted pieces. Ample daylight flooded through the window and into the dining area, never being interrupted or obscured by the small hours-of-operation sign in the lower left-hand corner next to the entrance. Simple moldings extended up the sides of the clear, smudge-free glass that remained just as unobstructed as the daylight and free from any sign

1:#29 - The Grounded Raptor : edited by viv : “Sex,” Cody mouthed his mantra as he entered the locker room for the first time since he’d returned to school. It was the same mantra he had been repeating to himself every day for the past two weeks, the same one he was repeating to himself now at 3:40 when he approached the doors. "it was just sex…” To an extent, it was, yet that mantra didn’t account for the hollow in Cody’s chest every time he thought he saw Jacob peeking aro
-
The first time Cody told himself "it was just sex", he knew he was lying, and now ,three years later, standing atop a wall of guilt, with clipped wings and dreams of coming to life, he wondered if he would fall before he flew. Will Cody find the chance, or will it be just another warm body to pass the lonely nights with?

chapter 5: : distilled by viv : "You have to respect it," I whispered into Rusty's ear, adjusting his grip on the stock ever so slightly. "Don't pull it," I cautioned, thinking about taking the moment to graze my lips along the exposed nape of his neck. "Just squeeze your finger gently," I continued, watching as Rusty followed my direction and squeezed his index finger slightly, resulting in the thunderous disruption of the quiet the valley where we stood. He stumbled

chapter 4: : distilled by viv : "Is it deep enough yet?" Rusty asked, a fine sheen of sweat glistening across his torso. "Nah," my father responded looking on briefly, gauging our progress. "You can go a little deeper..." Perhaps I should explain how we got in this seemingly precarious situation and, take a moment to explain, not all is what it seems to be. Stop being dirty... Anyhow, it all started about four-thirty in the morning. Yes, yes, far too ea

chapter 3: : distilled by viv : Back again huh? Couldn't get enough? Or, did you just stick around to watch me race? Didn't think so, and yes, there is more to tell about Rusty and me. After that second encounter, if you want to call it that, we fell asleep in each other's arms on my bed. Don't get me wrong, it was wonderful. I would have wanted nothing more in life at that point. I was, however, oblivious to certain things that became awfully clear in the months that

chapter 2: : distilled by viv : As I glanced around the room, my eyes focused on a pile of clean, folded bike gear. Next to it were Rusty's clothes, also folded neatly. He shoes lying in front of them with the socks mated inside. Then I noticed the blanket covering us. It was the duvet from the guest bedroom. "Morning," I heard him whisper from my chest as his short hair brushed against my bare skin. I looked down at him and smiled lightly. "Dude, I thought you locked
