Due to technical reasons, the story had to be posted in its entirety. That meant bypassing the 'recent story update' feature. Otherwise, it would've swamped the list because I think the minimum number of links in a chapter is 16, and that means at least 17 'chapters' would need to be posted for each chapter (from memory one chapter has 30 links). This was my second novel and I wanted to experiment with using embedded links. As a novelty I think it works, but I doubt I'll use the technique again.

Sorry, Joann, I didn't mean to torture you. Torturing people is Brandon's job. I hope he doesn't come after me for usurping his position ( *runs away and hides* )

Thank you! Sometimes life does get complicated.

Damn. Now I'm going to have go and download the song and put it on my iPod. There are times when I like melancholy and that's a perfect song for when I'm in that mood.
-
Relationships can get complex. Sometimes (hopefully most of the time) people end up with mutual respect and love. Other times, unfortunately, things aren't that simple.

She tried. Her heart was in the right place. It wasn't her fault... (add appropriate other pat phrases) Rick still got hurt
-
Have you ever heard the phrase "The path to Hell is paved with good intentions"?
-
There's lots of fault to go around. Drew's overly hopeful. Rick's overly scared. Brandon's overly protective. In moderation, none of those faults are serious. In combination....

“This tastes great, Mr. Canter!” I said, between bites of the barbecue chicken kebab. “Thanks, Rick. Help yourself to seconds if you want – there’s plenty.” “I’ll get you some more,” Drew said, putting his plate on his seat. “Just wait here.” He headed inside while I glanced at the other hardy souls that were staying outside. We had split up along gender lines, except that Scott was inside with Penny and Sue was outside with Joe, with the males by the fire and the women in comfort indoors. I

Rick isn't always the most rational of people, but then who is?
-
“Come on, Rick. Let’s go to the club rooms and celebrate!” I had to smile at Drew’s high level of excitement. I wanted to tell him about my chat with James, but I knew it would upset him, and I wasn’t going to take the shine off the win. It had been a tough game, with the result uncertain until the dying seconds. “I should get back to our dads. They’re probably wondering where I am.” I glanced around. “And where Will is.” Drew chuckled. “If Will’s lucky, he’ll be finding his own way home some

Life does get complicated at times. Yes, Rick's a coward, but only in one area -- he's scared to lose his friends. In other respects, like standing up to Phil, he's definitely not a coward.

Sitting at the table for the bridal party while Chris gave his speech about the happy couple, I looked over at where Dan was seated with Paul. The two of them have well and truly resolved their differences and life is looking good for all of us. Rob and Diane were floored when I told them I’m gay. It was at one of the get-togethers where they were organising the wedding. This one was at Chris and Paul’s place, and I had brought Dan along to keep Paul company while the rest of us worked. He was

I watched, amused, as Dan opened and closed his mouth several times with nothing coming out. His bewildered expression was priceless. “But…,” he eventually squeaked out before drifting into silence again. “You’re the first person I’ve told,” I admitted. “Even Chris and Paul don’t know.” “But…,” he repeated in a small voice. I sighed as I turned to look up the mountain. We didn’t have long before the ride would be finished. “I’ve been in the closet for years. If it wasn’t for first meeting C

The next morning, I was awoken by the sound of a herd of elephants square-dancing to a steel drum band that badly needed to develop some musical talent. Rolling my head to the side – lifting it would have taken too much energy – I saw Dan and Kelly, dressed for another day’s work, making themselves breakfast. Letting a low groan that reverberated though my skull like a scream in an echo chamber, I closed my eyes again. This is what I get for over-indulging the night before, and not taking any

Dan took charge straight away. With an aside to me to make some coffee for Kelly, he made her sit and then proceeded to calm her down and extract the details from her. It seems that while Garret was out with his latest girl, he had been attacked from behind. Kelly wasn’t sure, as she had the story third-hand from someone she knows who works at the medical centre, but it seemed that the guy had objected to Garret being with Serena. Whether it was her brother, boyfriend, or ex-boyfriend really wa

I was a little surprised to be woken up by the small sounds of Dan making himself some breakfast, rather than Garret storming into the room like bull elephant on heat. I turned my head to look at the other bed but, as expected, it hadn’t been slept in. With a stretch and a yawn, I swung myself off the bed and lowered myself to the ground. With a grunt and a half-raised hand to Dan to acknowledge his “Hi, Greg,” I staggered into the bathroom. Exiting a few minutes later, slightly more awake, I

Standing at the Oversnow terminal with Paul and Chris, I couldn’t help being excited. After two weeks of waiting and preparing, I was back up at the snow! It was unfortunate that Rob and Diane couldn’t be here as well, but Rob is still nervous after the last time we were at the snow. Diane has forgiven him for his actions, but she certainly hasn’t let him forget them. So, instead of joining us for the weekend, Rob is taking Diane to a B&B at one of the wineries in the Yarra Valley. It’s his

Stunned, I seared the image into my brain with one long look, before dragging my eyes away. Chris had staggered to a stop in shock, and Paul almost ran over him before he too realised that they were not alone. With an instinct that seems embedded into the male, they both collapsed into the classical “embarrassed naked male” pose – hands over the groin, knees together and shoulders hunched forward. Paul also half-hid behind Chris. Both faces had gone a bright beetroot red. Looking away, I saw D

Waiting outside my parents’ home, I wondered again why I allowed myself to be talked into this. Here I am, about to go on a weekend skiing trip with my sister, her boyfriend, and two friends of his that I’ve never met. It’s not as if I’m a keen skier. I’ve never even seen snow before! Looking at my watch, I realise that I’m early. They said we had to leave Melbourne by 5pm if we were going to get to Falls Creek tonight. I don’t understand why – after all, it doesn’t matter if we arrive after mi

It took me some time to fall asleep. Not only was the couch a bit uncomfortable, but I had also had a nap in the car on the trip up. I had the blankets from one of the spare bunks in Chris and Paul’s room to keep me warm, but my body just wasn’t co-operating. After an hour or two, I got up and stretched my legs. The heating in the lodge was certainly effective. I was dressed in only shorts and a T-shirt but I was quite comfortable. Rummaging around the kitchen, I decided to make myself a cup of

I was awoken on Sunday morning by the sound of banging from the kitchen. If I had been hung over, someone would have been copping a blast, albeit a very groggy and shaky one. However, the couple of glasses of water that I had before settling in for the night had done their trick. My head felt clear. Lifting my head, I saw Diane in the kitchen, dressed in a long T-shirt and a pair of panties. The way she was going through the cupboards, and the expression on her face, quickly conveyed that all w

He’s gay? I tried to open my mouth and respond that I’m gay too, but nothing would come out. This was just too much for me to absorb in one shot and I needed some time to understand what it meant. Old reflexes had kicked in and I wasn’t ready to say anything until I was comfortable again. Instead, I turned and stared at the top of the table. I didn’t really see it, but instead I saw my image of Dan shattering into a thousand pieces, before reforming into a new picture. I couldn’t work out what

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has provided feedback on this story. As it is only the second major story that I have tried writing, receiving messages of support and congratulations has helped me push through to the completion. I would also like to repeat my thanks to Blue for the editing and feedback he has provided. With well over 200 individual files in the story, it was a mammoth effort for him. I would also like to thank the administrators of the sites hosting t
