Well, the band tradition really became popular after the release of Bollywood film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai(1998)... But the day has been celebrated for quite some time. Prior to 1998, cards and simple greetings or even gifts were exchanged.

Sadly...More than 60% of the gay population in India is facing the above mentioned situation and there seems to be no help in the near future. The PIL against the law which criminalizes gay sex is still pending even after 6 years...
