  1. It was night. Sumi had teleported herself and Harakin home, and the others at the mystic’s house were getting settled for bed. Inspired by the queens’ creativity with Thech and Jzuna’s sleeping arrangement at their house, Theolan made the same recommendation to Muunith. “Honey, would you like to sleep in our nice cool bathtub?” Muunith liked the idea very much. Thech and Jzuna curled up together in their basin, and Fennah headed into the room she shared with Tchama, even though
  2. It was night. The former child-soldiers Sumi and Harakin were making their way through the streets of Gate Town. They headed along the quiet narrow alleys that led away from Red Raven’s and toward a little eatery overlooking the water. “Sumi, why didn’t you just open one of your doorways and teleport us to Mermaid’s Pleasure?” Harakin asked. “I’m hungry.” “It’s nice out; I felt like walking.” Sumi chuckled. “You’re always hungry.” Harakin replied, “The baked winkies they mak
  3. Theolan and the mystic were preparing a treatment for Lahari when they heard a quiet knock at their front door. “I’ll get it, honey,” Theolan said to his husband, trying to make his voice sound less hollow. He opened it and was greeted by Dotty Marbles and Auntie Peg with the three children. Thech, Jzuna, and Fennah had been with the queens and Ninyani since the evening two days prior. “Hello, lovely people,” Theolan said to them, “Lahari is sti
  4. My little rainbowy heart is exploding at your reactions to the return of the two queens 😭🌈💗 and I'm glad you're all fairly confident about the mystic and Lahari haha things may not be as they seem
  5. Lonklam left the mutilated corpse of the Shift boy in the forest at the edge of Hazel Cove, and Ronging followed him into the wilderness. With Lonklam’s craving satiated and Ronging’s not to rise again for some time, the two began to follow their secondary urge, the draw to be with others of their kind. The pull had always coaxed them back to Gunge, but it now made them travel north. They remained in the forested tracts of land and avoided the few other human habitations that lay between H
  6. After Ilya flew off with Lahari’s unconscious body, Olona began testing Unadi’s photonova gland to see if it was indeed no longer active. The two of them were still close to the edge of his lifeless grey realm, with the living forest surrounding it. Olona was not feeling ill at all. When Unadi and Lahari collapsed to the earth, Unadi had gotten right back up again, but Lahari was unresponsive to anything Olona or Ilya tried to do to help her recover. “I’m so sorry about your fri
  7. When Ilya brought Lahari’s unconscious body home, Theolan rushed off to see if any of their friends were available to watch over the three children during the night while the mystic treated his daughter. Bivon had left the group a little while earlier, and Theolan and the mystic did not know where he was, but his cart was still parked in front of their house. Theolan found Dotty Marbles, and she was happy to oblige. She now led Thech, Jzuna, and the ex-princess Fennah through the darkening
  8. Thank you for getting upset by Pelipi being gone and also at the officer's violence. "What useless idiots" is right on the money... now that the might-makes-right Messiahs aren't the dominant force in Teshon, some rather ineffectual leadership has temporarily stepped in...
  9. Ogomo’s ship was capsizing. It leaned in the water dangerously, and the bow was quickly sinking below the waves. The life rafts were lowered, and several small boats were spotted racing from the mainland toward the sinking ship. The weight of the water filling the hull caused a major portion of it to suddenly dislodge, and the section still above the waves lurched. Many people were thrown into the churning surf, and the rest of the ship began to be swiftly sucked beneath the roiling surfac
  10. The front door of the mystic’s house burst open, and Ilya rushed in with tears streaming down her cheeks. She was holding Lahari’s limp body in her arms✪
  11. The aroma of roasted food permeated the air in the kitchen. A large shank was resting on the counter with a tea towel on top of it. The meat was steaming, and it smelled delicious. “Bivon, there’s an extra chair in our bedroom,” the mystic said. “Do you mind getting it? Fennah, maybe you could lead the way.” The little girl grabbed the big red-bearded man’s hand, and Bivon smiled as she brought him down the hall. A moment later, the pair of them returned, and Fennah asked, “Can I sit b
  12. The sun was beginning to set, when Bivon saw the lights of Seven Rivers flickering through the trees. Thech and Jzuna were still hidden in the back of his cart as he led his horse through the town square. Just like in Port Judy, several of the village residents approached Bivon to order warm beverages as the evening cooled, but he informed them that he was on a supply mission and would be happy to make them their drinks when he returned. Unlike in Port Judy, Bivon parked next to an i
  13. wow... i really love how this crazy world that lives in my head is appreciated by you all 😭 thank you for sticking with my story! (your questions and curious ideas are exactly how i was hoping you'd react) and don't worry, all shall be revealed 😈
  14. Ogomo’s massive ship left the Uodila Archipelago with the tropical storm in hot pursuit, but his vessel was fast, and the voyage to the southern continent was uneventful. The nation was called Phanisia, and Ogomo docked at a port on the small coastal island of Philletri. Even though he only planned to resupply in Phanisia, he gave his crew a three-day shore leave. None of the crew bothered to venture from the island onto the mainland. Phanisia was not like the Uodila Islands, with its open
  15. Kosephaji, Relliduna, and Pelipi spent a lot of time above deck as the ship made its way south. It had been 11 days since Relliduna was attacked, and he was continuing to recover. He hobbled about the ship, chatting with all the hunky deckhands. One of the crew found a cane in the ship’s hold that assisted Relliduna immensely. Its brass handle was shaped like a fish that was very phallic, and Relliduna thought it was amusing. A few crewmembers figured out a way to secure Pelipi’s box to the
  16. Two bikes raced along a dirt path in a bright forest. The boys riding them had taped baseball cards to their bikes’ frames, and the repetitive slap of the spokes against the thin cardboard made their bikes sound like motorcycles; at least, they sounded like motorcycles to two 13 year olds. Billy was leading Todd along one of the trails toward the narrow valley locally known as Christmas Gulch. Todd had just moved to town. The boys turned a bend in the trail and Billy slammed on his br
  17. The next chapter is one of my favorite parts of the story, and I can't wait to share it with you all, but my editor and I need to work through a few of the later chapters to check continuity issues first... so it may be a few days before I can upload it 😍 I hope all of you are having fun with the slightly different style of dark fantasy in this fourth book
  18. all of your comments are really encouraging, thank you! "a beautifully lyrical bad LSD trip" was precisely the vibe i was hoping to achieve... haha but no one slipped her shrooms 🍄 you'll have to wait and seeeeeeee! 😝
  19. Lahari was standing in a glowing blackness. It was bright, and there was light coming from nowhere. She was standing on a black planet. It was not an earth-sized planet, but a tiny planet, and Lahari could see its curvature. Above her head, the sky was a bright black that shimmered like onyx, speckled with moving stars that swirled and overlapped in impossible patterns. “Hello? Hello? Hello?” Lahari echoed. “Anybody? …body? …body?” The dizzying movement of the sky was hypnotic,
  20. You're correct that when I wrote these books, I was imagining the future of our world. In book One, there is a little history of the mysterious and brief empire of Oselia and their origins in the ruins of what was once Prague. I also mention tectonic-disrupting Shifts, so I like to imagine that it's still Earth, but the whole world has been changed 💀
  21. The sun was setting over the grey spot of dead trees deep in the forest. Unadi and Lahari suddenly screamed, startling Ilya and Olona. Lahari was using her powers, pouring them into Unadi through Olona’s channeler and halo. There was no illumination, no sound besides their shocking screams; no change at all was apparent to Ilya or Olona. She checked all the devices she was monitoring, but there was no indication that anything had gone wrong. Before Ilya could ask Olona what was
  22. Ronging lumbered toward the sound of his companion’s voice. They were high in the forested mountains and had been separated. Thech and Jzuna’s powers sent the two monsters on a flight that had left them both far from any human habitation, but neither of them was injured from the fall. Ronging’s flesh had been scorched, but he would heal quickly. “Ronging! Where are you?!” came Lonklam’s voice from a distance. Ronging trudged through the snow but the cold did not affect his strange enha
  23. Unadi was in his shack. The little building stood at the dead center of the lifeless grey circle. He was anxious for Ilya to return with the friend who he hoped would be able to turn him into something other than a perpetual devourer of life. He could not remember a single other time in his existence when he hoped a person would come into his region of death. Now it was his sole thought. The hours of night continued to slip by, and Unadi tried reading to distract himself. He selected an ol
