Tuesday I reverted to the bike. I spent most of breakfast telling Matt about the places I had visited the previous day. “I’d like to see some of those.” “Well, some are easy enough.” “But it’d be nice to do it with you, as you wandered around there when you were younger.” “I will warn you, everything is very different now, ten years or so later. But I was thinking of exploring what the landscape was like now. How about this: when Vince is back, let’s work out if there’s a day

Well guessed, they in fact end up in a cottage in the Peak District!

Gordon and Brian got up promptly; Gordon needed to fetch the minibus from work and on the way back he was planning on stopping for pastries at a new bakery they had their eye on. This meant that when Toby got up, there was the smell of freshly baked croissants and no requirement to eat something sensible first. After breakfast he’d grinned and asked whether they could do that every day. Elise and Nina were dropped off promptly by Elise’s Father. Liz Wells dropped Justin off shortly after an

Importunate neighbours & old haunts

Don't worry there will be lots more Venetia Murray, including the Lunch. No naked tea, however! -

Have tweaked text slightly. Perhaps I should be issuing glossaries - English according to Hugill! -

'lane' here is the English colloquial usage referring to a narrow road. In common parlance when I was growing up a lane was a road that wasn't really wide enough for two cars. -
It was strange being in the huge house on my own. Of course I stayed in the annexe, but on Sunday there was the temptation to wander around the big house, trying to remember how it had been. But my old bedroom and the piano in the hall apart, the rest was only a vague memory. I called to mind notable scenes, but the house was only ever a backdrop. I could tell you that Dad and I had a fight about what degree course I was going to take, and that the fight had been in his study where he had been

Birthday ice cream & show-it Friday
Robert Hugill posted new chapter in Brian & Gordon: Living in threes
Toby’s birthday started early. On the Sunday before they had dropped into Evie and Drew’s where there was a present waiting for him, which was nice but meant that effectively his birthday was lasting a week. To Brian’s surprise, both Nina and Elise had responded positively to the invitation to the Fen Archaeology Centre. But there was also the matter of the young people’s takeover at the Wetland Centre. So, Toby was going over to Elise’s on Tuesday to practice his talk and the three of them- 3 comments

Cat, cake & naked tea
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Cat, cake & naked tea
I think Gray is worried both about Moggie's health and his own! And, Gray is meant to have some unlikeable traits though he comes over as nicer than originally intended. And Yes, I like cake. I was brought up in a baking household, making cakes, pies and tarts and started baking myself when I was quite young. As you probably gather, I make a mean Victoria Sandwich Cake! -
“And this is the override button. If the alarm goes off, you can press this and enter the code again.” “Right.” Vince peered down at me. “Are you sure?” “Yes, Vince. I am not as dense as I look. And besides, the prospect of having to phone you in Puerto del Sol or wherever it is you are going in Spain is enough to concentrate anyone’s mind.” Vince nodded. We were in the utility room, which lay behind the garage. Though as with everything to do with the house, it was on a gran

Not an oversight so much as bad grammar. There is a line in 'Food glorious food' from Oliver that we used to sing as Cold kippers and custard!

Toby is about to be 15 and Noah is a year older

Not sure about the relative relationship of nosey besom and nosey bitch. Probably a regional thing. And Val and Marina WILL be back!
-
I hope to but you never know!!

His Mum had organised things carefully, Brian reflected. Toby was out in the garden, busy and content for half an hour or so, whilst he and Gordon were a captive audience in the kitchen. To what end, he wondered? She made no pretence of tidying up or starting the washing up. Instead, she turned to them and put on what he always thought of as her serious-talk face. “It’s about Toby’s friend.” “Noah?” “Him.” “He’s a nice boy; they have a lot of interests in common.” “I’m s

I think Indian, but it was a LONG time ago.

I used to have a friend who made a fruit curry that bananas featured significantly in!
-
Sorry, that's my bad. The banana and the jam were in DIFFERENT sandwiches, otherwise that would be too weird. Mind peanut butter and banana works nicely

The correct answer to the question is I'm not sure either. I've tried no to prescribe, so see how you think things develop

Mid-afternoon, I was pleased with my progress. I’d sent off my latest article, on time and the exact word length. To celebrate, I cycled to Castle Field, sat and wrote. Amazingly, it just started. I now had a trio of possibles for Simon. The problem was, normally I’d put early drafts of poems to one side, then come back later and polish, rework. But this was a commercial venture and time critical. Who to consult? Bas was good for personal stuff. I could tell him anything, but his main

Casting bread on the waters
Robert Hugill commented on Robert Hugill's story chapter in Casting bread on the waters
It requires a bit of suspension of disbelief when thinking about an English summer too. -
Perhaps, as they are English, it will bite them on the arse!

For those interested, this is the coffee pot in question. More here.
