Family life is way more complicated. But worth it
Robert Hugill posted new chapter in Family life, but not as we know it
Matthew found that he rather liked Rory’s grandparents, and they seemed to deal with a gay grandson living in a strange house with a remarkable amount of humour (notably dry in the case of Jock MacDonald) and tolerance. Matthew’s experience of grandparents was limited, he only had one grandparent left, his late Mum’s Mum, and she was rather remote and forbidding, someone for whom you had to behave. Mrs MacDonald was different; she still didn’t put up with any ‘messing about’ but there was a smil- 10 comments

“Evidently, Vince’s friend Dawn thinks we’re living in a gay commune.” Peter’s eyes sparkled. “Come again?” I’d just sat down in the main kitchen, accepting a very welcome cup of coffee. “Stands to reason, Uncle Gray. What with you, me, Dad, and Jacob when he arrives, plus Peter at weekends.” “Hardly a commune.” Vince cocked his head. “You got a better word for it? And just wait till the Rotary Club gets hold of the idea.” “And is that a problem?” “Shouldn’t be

Matthew never did have that wank in the sea in St. Brise with his Dad, thank goodness, but they did swim naked a few times, even Rory joined them. The two boys never talked again about Matthew’s crazy idea about his father and his uncle, and the rest of the trip away had passed in an enjoyably lazy haze of doing nothing and wearing as few clothes as possible. The trip had something of an effect on life at home, this went on as before except things eased somewhat more. Matthew found that h

Not for a long time! I actually appeared on stage with Brightman in the West End. I was in the (amateur) chorus for the staging of Lloyd Webber's Requiem! -

Yes, that is the song and I had forgotten it was Brightman. It was on the radio A LOT when I was in my first job post-university. -

Perhaps I will have to try to work in something from I fell in love with starship trooper as well (though we all thought it sounded more like 'I fell in love with a draught-excluder' which is far more fun!) -

I would say that Vince devotedly watched the original series of Star Trek as a student but has not kept up with the more recent incarnations. And the phrase 'It's life, Jim, but not as we know it' is rather embedded in British consciousness I think and, after all, it comes not from the series but from the 1987 parody hit Star Trekkin' I believe -
“How’s the soap opera? The Philpotts: Coningham’s answer to the Kardashians.” Dawn gave a sly smile. Vince shook his head. “I just about know who the Kardashian’s are…” Dawn shook her head in mock exasperation. “The girls and boys in our office are mad keen. Every time I go into the main office, I’m regaled with the latest.” “And as for the Philpotts! I do not…” Vince ran out of steam almost immediately and shook his head. “Busy, but good.” “Do tell!” “Gray has a

Confidences and cutting loose
Robert Hugill posted new chapter in Family life, but not as we know it
"So, have you done it yet?" Matthew grinned at Rory. The two were sitting eating ice cream on the Esplanade. Matthew had assured Rory that they were still friends and that he admired Rory for being open about things. "I've messed about with a few guys, mainly friends of my cousins and that. But, well, you know…" Rory, normally so confident, looked a bit abashed. “I’ve not really gone all the way, kind of.” "So, how do you know?" Rory stared at Matthew and opened his eyes wide- 9 comments

Hortensia takes charge & a new opportunity

I simply wanted to imply that the Philpotts en masse were a little too in your face for Matt sleeping over for the first time. And Gray misunderstands his hesitation, at first... -
Hortensia takes charge & a new opportunity
Robert Hugill posted new chapter in Not just another Summer
Hortensia was taking charge. Vince had messaged her on Monday evening and we received strict instructions to do nothing until she arrived on Tuesday. Clearly, she didn’t trust us. Jacob had arranged to arrive late on the following Saturday morning. He had assured Vince that he did not have much to bring, and that it would be sensible to sit down and talk through everything like regular people. Now, Hortensia had arrived for her usual Tuesday visit and was giving me instructions. We wer- 23 comments

Jason had always known he was gay, that he liked guys. He liked the certainty, even though it had made life difficult. His parents had had trouble accepting it at first. They had taken time to get used to the idea. However, Rory's parents seemed to be something else. Rory hadn't said a lot, but the picture Jason had been able to assemble wasn't promising. Rory's father focused solely on his business and saw that as Rory's role too; the lad was to follow his father into the company. And Jason sus

There were just the three of us at breakfast. Freddie just did a naked dash to grab supplies. “I’ve been thinking about Jacob staying upstairs.” I looked at Vince. “A problem?” “No, I just wanted to talk through things so that we are prepared.” “Fair enough.” Peter, who was at the stove dishing up some sort of hash, said, “Things for the kitchen.” Vince smiled. “And bedding.” That did pull me up short. “There are beds up there, aren’t there?” “Basic fur

Gavin kicks back & Rory feels a complete idiot
Robert Hugill posted new chapter in Family life, but not as we know it
“Dad?” “Hmm”, Gavin was relaxing outside the hotel contentedly waiting for others. Matthew looked somewhat embarrassed, what on earth was wrong? The hotel was far ritzier than anywhere they usually went on holiday. Like most of the buildings on the Esplanade in St. Brise, it dated from the early 20th century but inside had been vastly upgraded. When he’d come last time, a couple of nights hadn’t broken the bank, given that work paid all his travel expenses. But this time, he and Jason- 7 comments

“You know, young Gray has some interesting ideas.” Dawn gave Vince a significant look. “Meaning what? That I don’t take him seriously? I’m not that literary.” “I’m not talking about the poems, as such. But the way he’s linking them to the community. Our community.” “You mean the photos and going on a trip with you?” Dawn sighed. “People are interested. He talked about making little radio talks. Arnold spoke to his mate, and we’ve got some names for you.” “Thanks.

Rory was worried he’d made a terrible mistake. He was standing outside a Portuguese café in town; it wasn’t a place he’d ever been to, and it tended to be patronised largely by foreign workmen. The display of cakes looked interesting, though more for their alarming colours than anything else, and he just knew that Matthew’s Dad would mention something about the high sugar content. Rory smiled to himself, it was strange and pleasantly satisfying the way Matthew’s family had sort of adopted him, h

Violin sonatas & sex tips

Bas does have one further appearance, but you are right. He is a device to enable us to hear a rather sharper voice from Gray. Glady you are enjoying it. -
“Good morning. This is ‘Morning Music’ on Estuary Radio with Sean.” “And Katie.” “Most teenagers prefer to escape their parents, though normally it involves lurking in their room, listening to loud music or playing video games.” “And what did you do, Sean?” “I was a sporty, I’m afraid. Out on the football pitch all hours.” “I might have known. Well, Graham Philpott used to get on his bike and cycle out to the countryside.” “Of course, you might recognise his name
