@centexhairysub John's big problem is, that he can't connect his theoretical knowlegde with his active thoughts. Meaning, he does know that not everyone is heterosexual or wants kids or loves music, but he still copies his own values/etc onto everyone else till actively proven otherwise. This leads to quite a bit of conflict and by now he often keeps his mouth shout when meeting new people. Regarding Dante, this is even worse, because John spent 30 years dreaming about his son. The few years where he could watch some dance lessons didn't provide much real facts to go on off. Therefore, there might be lots of problems coming up. Otherwise I totally agree with you
