    Epilogue

Now any time I have to mention driving in my stories, I stop and think, is this safe? Would @drsawzall approve? (Not even joking...) Hm........
  5. A couple of weeks later, I stood next to Amalie’s grave, watching my breath puff out into the cold air. The small funeral we’d held to give her a proper burial had been over for some time, but I couldn’t bring myself to go indoors just yet. My visions, my out-of-body experiences — whatever you want to call them — had affected me deeply. Experiencing the horribly traumatic events of Amalie’s final night left me very troubled and, ever since it happened, I’d been quiet and withdrawn to the point w

Truly. That final scene with Killian reliving her the moments leading up to her death were hard to write.

    Chapter 5

Thank you! I'm a huge Edgar Allan Poe fan so this story is just a little bit of a nod to one of my favorite writers.

  12. “Should I call an ambulance?” I heard Adam ask in a strained voice. “I don’t know,” Judy said. “Wait...I think he’s coming around.” I opened my eyes to find myself lying at the bottom of the stairs on the hall floor. Judy, Adam, Steve, and Kane were standing around me in a football huddle. Everyone looked a little fuzzy. “Killian, are you okay?” Adam asked anxiously. “I was pushed,” I mumbled. “What?” Steve, Judy, and Adam demanded in chorus. Steve and Adam turned d

Only one more chapter (and a brief epilogue) left... All will be revealed soon!
  14. Several hours later, the medical examiner had laid out an almost complete — if very small — skeleton on a piece of tarpaulin next to the shallow hole. Of those gathered around, only the ME, Kane, and Adam were really surprised by the pitiful find. I’d had to turn away after they found the tiny skull. It was partially crushed, and I couldn’t bear to look at it. The coroner took a few minutes to examine the bones while Judy kept poking in the dirt. Suddenly she jumped to her feet with an excl

  20. Judy recovered before I did. She stood and took the remaining steps in one graceful leap. She looked up and down the hall almost frantically, waving the phone's beam back and forth. "She's gone." I realized that the hairs on my neck and arms had settled back to their normal state. I knew without question that Amalie really was gone, at least for the time being. I pushed myself to my feet and joined Judy in the now empty hallway just as the lights flickered and came back on. Judy l

    Chapter 2

Thank you! And yes, I don't think Adam would take the revelation that his son was visiting Killian and not him (or really anyone, for that matter) very well.

    Chapter 2

Interesting questions! Originally, this story was a part of All Lost Things. In its third reprinting, almost a decade ago now, I had a fantastic editor who thought that the ghost subplot was a great story, but distracted from the main story line. He suggested I pull it out and keep it as a short story/novella. I agreed with him, so I pulled it out, reworked it to stand on its own, and it is now set almost immediately after All Lost Things. That would make Kane about 16(ish). More Fun Facts about this story: The titles for All Lost Things and In the Angel's Keeping are from the same poem, linking them together still: But all lost things are in the angels' keeping, Love No past is dead for us, but only sleeping, Love by Helen Hunt Jackson When this was part of All Lost Things, Seth played a big part. When it became a stand-alone story, Seth couldn't be in it (for reasons...if you've read All Lost Things, you might have theories) so Judy filled much of that role. In a lot of ways, it works better. (But don't worry, Seth returns in The Truth of Yesterday.) There have been three different cover designs for All Lost Things over the years. They all feature the angel statue, even though by its third printing, the angel statue was no longer part of the story. Oops. If I ever get my Ko-Fi site fleshed out, I'll have the old covers on there. I painted the OG cover myself. A dear friend now owns the painting. I also did the paintings for the OG Bleeding Hearts and Reap the Whirlwind covers!
