Interesting questions! Originally, this story was a part of All Lost Things. In its third reprinting, almost a decade ago now, I had a fantastic editor who thought that the ghost subplot was a great story, but distracted from the main story line. He suggested I pull it out and keep it as a short story/novella. I agreed with him, so I pulled it out, reworked it to stand on its own, and it is now set almost immediately after All Lost Things. That would make Kane about 16(ish).
More Fun Facts about this story:
The titles for All Lost Things and In the Angel's Keeping are from the same poem, linking them together still:
But all lost things are in the angels' keeping, Love
No past is dead for us, but only sleeping, Love
by Helen Hunt Jackson
When this was part of All Lost Things, Seth played a big part. When it became a stand-alone story, Seth couldn't be in it (for reasons...if you've read All Lost Things, you might have theories) so Judy filled much of that role. In a lot of ways, it works better. (But don't worry, Seth returns in The Truth of Yesterday.)
There have been three different cover designs for All Lost Things over the years. They all feature the angel statue, even though by its third printing, the angel statue was no longer part of the story. Oops. If I ever get my Ko-Fi site fleshed out, I'll have the old covers on there. I painted the OG cover myself. A dear friend now owns the painting. I also did the paintings for the OG Bleeding Hearts and Reap the Whirlwind covers!
